lol my first exposure to him was his character in Fury and I was like I do not like this guy do not want to see him again. Took a few more films he kept popping up in and seein him in interviews I def came around
Its weird hearing Jon Bernthal not talking with a "toughguy" voice. All his roles he has the gravelly southernish accent but his real voice is like a drama student.
Haha, when I heard it I couldn't believe the host didn't chase it with a tasty joke. Then the way he's grinding and pulling at his chin makes you wonder if perhaps Spacy might have done some inappropriate touching or something?
yeah i feel the same. with his voice too he seems different. sounds more like a real 'woah dude, totally' seth rogan type of person than i expected, lol. but yeah cool dude & versatile actor.
He was exactly like the characters he plays, that's what makes him so good. The way he channelled that whole dark side of his into this artistic genius is special.
Love him as an actor but seeing an interview with him really respect him as a guy. None of that tip-toeing Hollywood bullshit, just real talk and unfiltered and also doesn't come across as grandstanding. Big fan.
FArts I had only listened to this part of the interview on here because I don't have Sirius and I didn't hear that part until I looked into it more. I agree, that's pretty squirmy and hypocritical. Knowing that's the person and knowing what they did and justifying it still is shitty. That definitely makes me rethink it, thanks for bringing it up because I wouldn't have looked for it otherwise.
"you don't hear many hollywood types defend working for roman polanski" Most of Hollywood actually did a couple years ago he was almost deported back to the US because he's still on the run and was convicted. A bunch of A list actors signed a petition to pardon Polanski. Chris Rock and Jay Leno are the only two celebrities I can remember off the top of my head that was against Polanski.
I hope Jon Bernthal gets a lot more high profile gigs going forward. He’s gotten mostly supporting roles in movies and it looks like the Punisher is done. Dude is a damn good actor, he deserves to be a leading man.
It almost looks like Jon is nervous whenever he's talking how he looks around but that shows how great of an actor and humble of a person he is, he can channel it into being intimidating in film and tv
'Baby Driver' is one of my favourite films of 2017. I was SO disappointed in Kevin Spacey when the stories about his behaviour came out, but the flip side of that is I'm now a huge Jon Bernthal fan after hearing him speak so eloquently in this interview.
+jb: Thanks for the heads-up! I'll definitely checkout The Punisher on Netflix. I think my view of Jon Bernthal was coloured by my opinion of his character, Shane, in the Walking Dead, who turned out to be a wrong 'un! This interview was a timely reminder that I should try to separate actors from the roles they play!
ams914: Erm, nope! I think you might be self-projecting there! It's a rather narrow mindset to assume someone can only appreciate an actor/actress purely based on your subjective view of their f**k-abilty! Although, now that you mention it...(Sorry, just kidding!) It's just that when you love a movie - especially if it's directed by Edgar Wright! - as much as I do, it's great to hear someone involved in that film taking things as seriously as it deserves, & talking thoughtfully on their experience. I'm actually still struggling to get past his history as 'Shane' in The Walking Dead, but I guess that's a compliment to his acting skill? I'll endeavour to continue trying not to hold that against him though!
joelabo: TBH, I gave 'The Punisher' a try on Netflix, but for some reason I didn't quite connect with it, & abandoned it after a couple of episodes. (Mind you, I had a similar reaction to all the other Marvel series on Netflix as well.) I refer you back to my previous comment: just because you appreciate an actor in a role, why does it always have to degenerate into how "bangable" YOU consider they are to me? Plus, I'm still struggling with my residual negative feelings towards Bernthal's 'Shane' in 'The Walking Dead'! I just thought this interview made me reassess him as a person & actor, rather than the roles he plays. He genuinely came across - mumbling, swearing & all! - as more thoughtful & passionate about acting than my previous misconceptions lead me to believe. But as you, joelabo, are clearly attracted to him, who am I to say that's wrong. You go for it!
Bernthal reminds me of older actors. He knows he is legitimately tough, compared to most people you'd walk by, and doesn't need prove it. But it comes across with characters like Frank Castle and Shane. Most tough people aren't mean. This comes of over a decade working restaurant and bars and being a movie buff.
Because it sounds like he's lying!! Just joining the crowd in destroying Kevin Spacey! Why not? He might as well have something negative to say about him as well...
@@Vanilla_Rocket I think most stars can be diva like on set. I mean, who wants to challenge the A lister that will get you fired and blacklisted? Must be tough if some star is not the most pleasant person or even worse
That's why Bernthal is so good as The Punisher. He killed people in Afghanistan. That's why Bernthal is good in Baby Driver, he's done heists in real life See how ridiculous you sound? 🤣
Just one of the many reasons I love Jon Bernthal. He comes across as so down to earth. It's good to hear him speak his mind and stand up for diversity in all walks of life.
Bernthal is a great actor and always turns in a great performance. Just off the top of my head I really liked him in Fury and The Accountant. Supposedly there will be a sequel to the The Accountant and I sure hope he's in it. In this interview he reveals himself to be very open, highly intelligent, talkative, and goes beyond the questions onto very interesting and revealing tangents. A very interesting guy
Jon is one of the best actors of his generation imo. Even though Fury was so-so, his character was spot on....... Shot Caller, the Accountant - all serious performances. Even his bit part in Sicario was on point. Legend.
Wow. I never saw this guy in an interview and he seems so different, like a total sweetheart compared to his characters on screen - a true testament to his acting skills.
Idk about the rest of you, but ever since the late 80's early 90's i haven't really liked many of the "action hero" types... it's not their fault really i mean we came from guys like Stallone and Schwarzenegger... hard acts to follow. But with guys like Tom Hardy ane John Bernthal on the scene, i'm feeling a lot better!
Your comment is basically a slap in the face to Tom Cruise lol, seeing as he's the first action star that springs to mind of that mid90s-early10s void that you're referring to. But I agree. The big burly caricatured action stars of the late 80s/early 90s were replaced with dramatic actors infiltrating the action genre as the films became more realistic, more grounded & more serious. So folks like Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Craig as Bond, etc. I mean even someone like old man Liam Neeson has been big in the action genre this last decade or so. (this is partially why beefy Dwayne Johnson has found more success with family films rather than true Sly Stallone/Arnie type roles, because those old school action roles haven't been popular in recent times). But as you say Jon Bernthal has found his niche with his Punisher style characters & even though I'm not the biggest fan of him, Tom Hardy seems to play a lot of meathead characters. So who knows, maybe the old school action star archetype might be back on the rise
Wow I agree so much. I knew about this guy only recently and now I am watched quite a few of his movies. He is so fucking different in each role. He brings nuances and layers to every role he plays. Shot caller, wind river, the accountant are a few movies I liked.
Wolf of Wall Street (2013) Leo: "Jon, show him how it's done. Boom, sell me that pen. Watch go on." (Hands Jon the pen) Jon: "Want me to sell this fuckin pen? Why don't you do me a favor, write your name down on that napkin for me. Leo: "I don't have a pen." Jon: Exactly. (Jon tosses Leo pen) Supply and demand my friend."
Arthur Coelho I've seen it before but I've also watched it like 6 times in the past 2 months just from it being on tv. Never gets old, will go down in history as a classic.
He's not. I met him on the set of a film. He was super nice, but he was very flirtatious. If someone hot walked by he was very vocal that he thought they were hot.
Literally, before the last like 4-5 days I have never seen Jon Bernthal except for in a movie. After watching this interview and the interview he did with Joey Diaz, he's 100% a genuine, normal, authentic human being.
It's cool to see that Jon Bernthal is this chill, well-articulated, and generally a nice guy. I only knew him as hardass characters like Shane and Punisher.
this man is an incredibly great actor. I'd love to see him in more projects and as the lead. and he seems like a genuinely good man. and he has intelligence to go with that great personality and those good looks. and did you guys know he use to work at a law firm? he was a freaking lawyer! thats so awesome!!
This guy is definitely one of my favorite actors on the moment! I think it's cool how Bernthal talks of personal experience and I think this guy is really a great dude in real life, even though I haven't met him :D
Kevin Spacey is a very talented man. I grew up in Hollywood as a child entertainer and met many top celebs. The higher the celeb , the nicer they were. Kevin never seems to.rise to being a great celeb. Even if celebs were assholes to their public but they were respectful towards the people they worked with. Lots of jealousy in Hollywood. And let's face it ..Kevin is not getting any younger. Spacey is his own worst enemy.
Awesome observation Alex! I totally agree. An X-Files reboot would be a good idea even though I generally hate reboots. Jon's a great actor, he would make it worthwhile. Any suggestions on who think would be a good choice to play Scully??
It's so funny how grim and moody most of his characters on film are, then you watch an interview and he's the most charismatic, warm dude. Great actor.
RU-vid has decided I'm interested in Jon Bernthal interviews today. Gotta say, nice one RU-vid. What a generally lovely, down to earth and honest man he is.
After meeting johnny in person and having several conversations with him daily (for 2 weeks); I can confirm he is a awesome dude. I only hope I can work on set with this guy one day.
I really hate the fact that when was about to say we need to scrutinize these accusations & some of these people are just trying to shit 💩 on people that bald headed prick derailed him.
Jon is such a great inspiration for us all. Super genuine and an honest guy. Not only a great actor of his time and i truly believe he will go down in history as one of the greats. I think he will be in more, meaningful & bigger projects. Kudos!
Spacey became the real life version of his role of Buddy Ackerman from Swimming With Sharks. Except that Buddy Ackerman at least had the excuse that he'd suffered enormously and there was a human being under the surface.
I dont understand why he didnt say what he felt about Kevin before all the allegations. If he didnt like him that much, why didnt he tell Edgar wright about his behaviour? Surely Edgar wouldn't put up with bad behaviour on set, but he said absolutely nothing to anyone because it sounded more like what Kevin did was not worth telling other people. He most likley didn't like the way he worked on set with him and had never had that kinda of professionalism before. Seeing as he came out with this story after the allegations on Kevin, I feel like he wanted paint him in a bad way on purpose. Especially now that Kevin has been found innocent i question what john is saying here because he never says SPECIFICLEY what Kevin did . I'd like to hear what John thinks about all his now.
