Jon, First off Great Road Win even though this is just barely a Quad 2 road win. Fortunately McCain got sensationally hot. But the bigger issue for me is that your offense could be top 5. Historically, NCAA champions have a Top 6 Kenpom Offense. Right now we have been hanging around 10 most of the year. Jon, you were asked how this offense can continue to flourish with McCain. Well it's simple. I've been saying it since the beginning of the season. SET MORE BALL SCREENS. Legitimate, INTIMATE ball screens where the defending guard learns the smell of Kyle's Anti-perspirant! You need to intelligently and legally roughen up the opposing guards. Get separation for McCain and Roach for 3PT shots. It's very simple to add into your offensive formula. Run the Ball Screen Action, Run Staggering Ball Screens with Kyle and Mark, get creative and run Zone Action/Motion with Stewart at the 3. YOU DONT NEED TO PLAY 3 GUARDS. You have the luxury of doing this, but as I have said since the beginning of the year, 3 GUARDS IS NOT YOUR BEST STRATEGY. Right now, if you look at the Plus/Minus for Tyrese its negative, despite his Ass-TO value. Same for McCain despite his 3PT abilities. This is because your guards are poor perimeter defenders. Personally, if I am you, I am having a very serious sit down with Jai Lucas about toughening up these guys defensively - which should have been done back in December. Given the size and athleticism of this team's makeup we should be Top 16 in Kenpom Defensive Efficiency EASILY (AND GETTING BETTER) and we are sitting around 25 (which is about 5-10 spots better we have been for most of the year, and to me, this is shameful). We should be better than this and its partly why we are Ranked 17th in the NET Rankings rather than top 10. Listen, You can't play Stewart all the time and I understand he can accumulate fouls quickly, but you have to consider playing him at the 3 for major minutes. I'd even start him at the 3 and put Roach at PG, Jared at the 2. Given Mark is much more reliable offensively, Stewart is another role player that can win you the rebound battle which means more OREBS for kick out 3's or layups, AND 1's, and defensively, less FGA for your opponent (BETTER EFFICIENCY on both sides). Why play Caleb so much???? He doesnt move the needle in rebounding, putting the ball in his hands doesnt mean you will have less TO's than putting the ball in Roach or McCain's hands with Stewart in the game. As for Proctor, his 2PT% is really good, but he doesnt get to the FT Line. Do you trust him to be a better mid range shooter than Roach? Of course not, and Roach has been consistently better from 3 this year. Roach is even playing better defense!!!!!! Jon, I encourage you to play more 2 guard lineups and have a size and athleticism advantage. Set more ball screens to get your shooters open 3 point shots or more mid range curls. Coach Filipowski Harder. For a 3.9 GPA last year he should be smarter with the ball and have less clumsy TO's. You can do this. This team can be really really good and should be really really good! LETS GO!!!
@@ebnest123 Want to be a coach????? This team is underperforming plain and simple. Jon is showing he’s a good coach, just not an elite coach. Some things he can change to move the needle are blatantly obvious. If he gets knocked out early in the NCAA tournament again (because right now he’s looking at a 4 seed from a favored 1 seed preseason) and he has a mediocre season next year, because his team will likely reload again, a great question will be how many more years will Nina King and Vince Price give him despite the extension? Unless he makes serious moves in the portal unlike what he did this offseason, I’d say they may only give him 4 years.
@@rwforsh hey I’m just trying to prep up Jon for the real game against Wake Forest and the real prize in April. Haven’t you noticed why Duke is playing more efficiently??? The offense hasn’t run entirely through Kyle. But is running through the guards more. Right now we are beating unspectacular teams…. AND WE SHOULD BE. But Duke will face smothering perimeter defense against Wake Forest where hard ball screens will open the floor up more easily for our guards. Did you even watch the UNC game??? Duke had very few open 3’s. And even when we needed a 3 to get back in the game, we are still driving to the hoop. Kyle and Mark should be hard screening to cause defenses to make hard switching choices. Either leave our guards open or suffer mis matches in the post. Yet all Jon does are slip screens. Defensively, we lack toughness, specifically defending penetration at the perimeter. Our guards over react to ball handler movement. We need to keep our backs to the basket. Stop blow by’s. Look 3 guard lineups are advantageous at times and we will have to die by the sword since that was Jon’s plan preseason, but to have an edge in March we will need size and athleticism. The 4 factors that win basketball games are eFG%, OREBs, TO’s, and FT’s made. We have the advantage in eFG% with the great shooters, GET THEM OPEN WITH SCREENS. Right now we are playing terrible defensive teams and it hasn’t mattered, welcome to the ACC. You get Stewart in for the Rebounding edge. He needs to toughen up and grow into a significant role like how Mark has since the beginning of the season, that should be a priority given our lack of bench and no true 5 to come in if Kyle is in Foul trouble or gets hurt. It gives you an edge in reducing the opposing teams FGA’s and helps close out perimeter shooting if you play him at the 3. How many close games have we seen open made 3’s from OREBS??? Stewart is a magnet to the ball off rebounds. I could go into further detail, but winning in these two parameters alone are enough to win most games, except UNC who averages close to 19 points a game in FT’s and who by the way is the 4th best power 5 team in rebounding last time I checked. Harrison Ingram is their new Brady Manec who wrecked us in 2021-2022.
