Highlander (1986)
Highlander is a 1986 British-American fantasy action-adventure film directed by Russell Mulcahy from a screenplay by Gregory Widen, Peter Bellwood, and Larry Ferguson. It stars Christopher Lambert, Roxanne Hart, Clancy Brown, and Sean Connery. The film chronicles the climax of an age-old war between immortal warriors, depicted through interwoven past and present-day storylines. It is the first film in the Highlander franchise.
Connor MacLeod (Lambert) is born in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century. After being mortally wounded by the murderous Kurgan (Brown) in battle, he makes a seemingly miraculous recovery and is banished from his village under suspicion of witchcraft. Five years later, MacLeod is found by swordsman Ramírez (Connery), who trains him in swordplay and explains that they and others were born immortal, invincible unless beheaded. Immortals wage a secret war, fighting each other until the last few remaining will meet at the Gathering to fight for the Prize. In 1985, the Gathering is finally happening in New York City, and MacLeod must ensure that the Prize is not won by the Kurgan.

But none of them would have the accents expected. It seems unlikely they would have been speaking Inglis which was the language of government. They are presumably both speaking a 16th century form of Scots Gaelic so Connor would have no accent, or maybe a highland one, but they might have been speaking French which was still common among the nobility. Ramirez would have an accent reflecting some weird mashup of all the languages he has known. Given that Mr. Connery wasn't going to change his own accent for the part it is a good enough stand in. But what do I know, and yes the incongruity is funny.

Jonathan, Idk if you guys do reactions to series, but I would definitely recommend Highlander: The Series. At least do season 1, 4 or 5 episodes to get a taste of it. The writing/dialogue is better. The acting is better. It stars British actor Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod - an descendant who came a couple generations after Connor. It serves as an alternate sequel to the 1986 film, it features a storyline in which Connor has not won "the Prize" sought by all Immortals, who still exist post-1985.

So the servant suggesting his lord shoot MacLoud in the back was dishonorable in itself. There's other Highlander movies but none of them even come close to the first one. The 2nd will make you feel dumber having watched it, the 3rd is actually a decent movie, 4th had potential but suffered from some extremely bad editing and the 5th will have you asking yourself what the hell you just watched. Not only that but they follow a weird formula. The 2nd is a direct sequel to the 1st, the 3rd pretends like the 2nd doesn't exist and continues on from the 1st, the 4th pretends like the 2nd or 3rd doesn't exist and continues from the 1st and from the series. The 5th just ignores all the movies completely and continues from the series.

Cinematography notes: -The opening aerial shot inside MSG was achieved with a rig they called a Skycam, effectively suspending the camera on wires. Developments of this would later change how live sports would be shot for decades. -The fast, graceful dolly shots that tracked Kurgan and MacLeod as they clashed in front of the windows backlit in blue were actually achieved with a Louma crane rather than a camera dolly. They accidentally discovered that pushing or kicking the arm of the crane just so made it spin gracefully out across the warehouse floor, so they restaged the scene and sent the arm of the Louma spinning out again on purpose. -The fast, frenetic cutting style came from director Russell Mulcahy's background as a pioneering music video director (he directed the first video MTV ever aired). It was so unusual in feature films at the time that the producers watched dailies of the footage Mulcahy was shooting and, thinking there was no way all this random shit was ever going to cut together, wondered if they'd have to fire him. To set their minds at ease about how all these random closeups were going to cut together, Mulcahy put together a sequence (the parking lot swordfight and the subsequent quickening) to show them what the intended effect was going to look like. -It wasn't just the suits who had doubts about HIGHLANDER's flashy, kinetic style: Old school British cinematographer Gerry Fisher likewise had doubts about Mulcahy's visually aggressive style and constant camera movement, though Mulcahy ultimately got his way.

So glad that you enjoyed this gem of a movie. Australian director Russell Mulcahy hits a homerun with only his second feature film. Of course Mulcahy had an extensive background in music videos by this time, including "Video killed the radio star" by the Buggles. At 71 years of age he has directed over 60 films and is still going strong. You can tell even from this early work that he has the magic eye. His use of tracking shots and imaginative transitions are just some of his hallmarks. Can I just say something about the final duel on the Silvercup sign. This movie was made in 1985 before cgi. That whole set had to be built and then demolished using only practical effects of the time. So impressive and very dangerous, I'm sure. Roxanne Hart as "Brenda " is amazing and her stellar performance grounds the film in reality. Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert are reliable in their roles, but my tip of the cap has got to go to Clancy Brown for his marvelously manic and over the top portrayal of the "Kurgen". He was the breakout star in this role and deservedly so. His "Kurgen" is a complete animal, and completely unredeemable. Rarely have I seen such a simple concept executed so expertly. Initially panned by the critics, the movie made only 13 million against a budget of 19 million. A flop. But with cable TV and home video rentals, "Highlander" quickly rose to the status of cult classic. Lastly, I watched your reaction to "Excalibur", one of my all-time favorites, definitely top 5. You have excellent taste in movies my friend. 👌Looking forward to more from you. Thanks!

Lemme get this straight... When Cannon films were told that American audiences would walk out of the film because they didn't understand what was going on, Cannon reluctantly added the intro. In that intro they explicitly, directly, and very simply told you, both in text and audio, what the film was about, and somehow what you got wasn't 'immortal beings fighting for all time' you got 'time travelling ghosts'. So that intro, which the film makers though was so basic it was an insult to the audience, THAT was too complicated for you?

1:06:50 - Dude, the movie was filled with Queen "Princes Of The Universe" "Gimme The Prize" "One Year Of Love" "Who Wants To Live Forever?" "Hammer To Fall" "A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling/New York, New York" "A Kind Of Magic" No, it was not based on a book.

one of the best scores, Highlander score by Queen..... rocked. Also the Score for Conan the Barbarian by Basil Polliodoris...... man the scores make the show.

Love your sword. I have the sword of the Witch-King of Angmar on my wall. Also, there’s a Highlander anime movie out of Japan that’s very cool. Different characters set in the future. It’s called “Highlander: The Search for Vengeance.”

This was nice. It was better when I was a kid. Decent film saved by Sean Connery, an interesting story, good transitions, Queen’s soundtrack and a great villain. Thanks, man! Don’t miss out on Queen’s music video for ”Princes of the Universe”. Masterpiece! It heightens the movie. Thanks again! Peace…

Hey, so from around that same time (late '70's to Mid 80's), there were some pretty decent fantasy/sci-fi movies. I recommend the following: - Conan the Barbarian (the best) - Conan the Destroyer (so-so) - Dragonslayer - Ladyhawk - Bladerunner - Robocop - Terminator - Krull - Beast Master - Q (strange entry / Horror fantasy) - Big Trouble in Little China - Goonies (of course) Those are off the top of my head, but feel free to add to it.

Whatever you do, do not ruin the experience by watching the sequel. I guess, since it's been a couple of generations, that people would want a remake ... The younger crowd would like it, I guess. A favorite oldie for me was 'The Sword and the Sorcerer' (Lee Horsley, 1982).

What you are referring to regarding the bagpipes is the Military Tattoo at Edinburgh castle during the huge art festival, I think it's called the Fringe festival or something like that(?). Been there myself, it was pretty awesome.

A Frenchman played Scottish . A Scottish played a Egyptian . None using the correct accent . But man I love this movie . The Cinematography was spectacular . No budget just a great story and a cast that just worked . The only Song not on the Queen Soundtrack was New York New York and I would love to here the complete song !!!!!!!

If you love an 80s movie that’s shot like a music video, definitely watch Cobra. That film lends itself more to montage than cool transitions, but Andrew Robinson (Garak from Deep Space Nine, the dad in Hellraiser) is in it!

I think idea of "the prize" differs on the basis who gets it. Thats why Ramirez did not want Kurgan to win, because he is evil and would probably turn it into world domination thing. Connor wanted a family and to be mortal, so the prize was that for him. Highlander sequels are probably the worst sequels ever made lol...there is like 4-5 of them. The reason why they are so awful is they constantly tried to explain origins of immortals and come up with the most bizarre stupid ideas. There is also complete left field U-turn on the whole concept and inconsistency in the second movie...so you are fine stopping here. This story works just as a single movie. Everything else cloud be watched just as a joke. TV Show was awesome for its time if you were a kid back in the 90s. And there is actually a story for years that remake with Henry Cavill is in the works, but I don't know will it ever be made.

I'm a bit chagrined to admit that the thing I look forward to most for anyone reacting to this film is them seeing the Queen credit in the opening. I really loved this when I was 14. Now, ehhh, well nostalgia I guess. Looking forward to the Henry Cavill reboot. He said the swordplay in The Witcher pales to what's coming for the upcoming film.

Directors cut. There was no gratuitous flipping in the first parking garage fight, no WW2 flashback, and no zoo scene with the lion in the original American version. Good luck finding the original release of the second movie. It had a VHS release, but he the directors cut came out. The original version of the sequel was a faster running movie in my opinion, the directors cut was maybe more true to the original vision, but slow moving.

Big fan of the movies, and series, minus Highlander 2. I own a replica of Connor's mideivel sword, and Duncan's katana from the series, as well as several others. I agree with seeing any Highlander movie, or the series, except for #2.

Fasil's sword in the garage fight is based on the sword of Philip II. of Spain. You can still get affordable replicas of the Felipe II sword with a standard stainless steel blade, and then there's the beautiful replica of the Fasil sword made by Paul Macdonald of Macdonald Armouries.

Fasil was played by Peter Diamond. He was also the stunt coordinator for the film, which may explain the backflipping shot he gets to show off in. He had a big career in stunts, including the original Star Wars trilogy.

The extended version has several scenes added that the original theatrical release and the VHS and DVD version didn't have. One of which is the WWII flashback. I that scene was appropriately cut in my opinion. The Cheese is already pretty think in this movie without that one. Don't take me wrong, this is a classic... and one of my favorite, but sometimes, leave the release alone.

The way you should watch the franchise is this...1, 3, The highlander series, 4 and separately watch 2 and 5. Also there was an animated series for kids and an anime film which was significantly violent and it is a completely different story about the oldest MacLeod ever to exist.

The police arriving at the arena, he just left the scene of the crime at speed, who called it in and how quick was their response time? What were they responding too? and why were they so hyped up to attack a speed offense like that? Also healing is somewhat inconsistent. They heal from all wounds inflicted after their first death and yet Kurgen has a scar across his throat? As for the early computer matching signature letters, I can't even duplicate my own signature if I try. Over the years it has changed, why do you think they've moved away from signing for things. It was an art form to determine signatures. The idea letters matched over several different signatures is ridiculous. You write characters differently based upon preceding and successive characters too in script.

You were right to go to the Highlands. Edinburgh and Glasgow are shit holes. Yeah that’s Eilean Donan castle. The highlands are where it’s at. I shouldn’t say that I hate it when waves of tourists arrive and fuck up the place leaving litter and breaking shit. Destroying trees for campfires. I take I back. The highlands are shit don’t come here. Go to Glasgow instead you’ll like it there
