The Exorcist (1973)
The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin from a screenplay by William Peter Blatty, based on his 1971 novel. The film stars Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Jason Miller, and Linda Blair, and follows the demonic possession of a young girl and her mother's attempt to rescue her through an exorcism by two Catholic priests.

People never understand that he's taking something like nitroglycerin for a bad heart: It's the one thing that the movie seems to fail to convey on a consistent basis.

No, we do know what Fr. Merrin's pills are and what they're for. They're very obviously nitroglycerin tablets because he very obviously has a heart condition. How the hell does NOBODY know what a nitroglycerin tablet is anymore??? Also, did you just actually have the balls to say that the makeup....still some of the most brilliant in the history of film....is "outdated"? I'm amazed that you noticed the makeup or anything else for that matter being that you blathered incessantly over the entire film.

It's a real testament to the makers of this film that 50 years after its release, it can still shock and un-nerve folks. And doesn't Ellen Burstyn give a phenomenal performance? Her character's inner turmoil is palpable. And Mercedes McCambridge's vocal performance as Pazuzu is Oscar worthy. - - - - - Max Von Sydow was only in his 40s when the played Merrin. When he returned as a younger Merrin in 1977's EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC he didn't need the makeup to look older. - - - - - In the novel, Lt. Kinderman showed up at the McNeil house to arrest Regan for the murder of Burke Dennings, right as Kerras threw himself out of the window. After he saw Regan, he pieced together what occurred and actually ended up covering up the details for Chris and Regan's privacy. - - - - - Also in the novel, whenever Regan's head would "spin", it was described as an illusion that the demon would project at people in order to elicit shock and fear. When Chris saw this, she was so jarred that she fainted. - - - - - I hope you do reaction vids to the other films in this franchise ... EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC (1977) [a total shit show ... couldn't decide if it was horror film or a sci-film] THE EXORCIST III: LEGION (1990) [my favorite sequel] DOMINION: PREQUEL TO THE EXORCIST (2004) [decent prequel] EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING (2005) [idiotic prequel]

It was scary to me as a child, but as I got older & wiser, I found what happened on set to be more interesting than a movie meant to scare. Pazuzu was used as the antagonist in the movie. But in reality is an an ancient Deity of Mesopotamia, what is now Iraq, as shown in the movie. Pazuzu is the personification of the SouthWestern Wind. He is considered destructive & dangerous, but also a protector. During filming a bird flew into the circuit box, catching itself & the set on fire burning it all down, except for Regans bedroom, it was untouched ... 9 people associated with the film died before its release. 9 is a sacred number in Chaldean numerology, the Chaldean Empire was centered in Babylon, which was in Mesopotamia or now Iraq ... People need to be more cautious about what they dabble with ...

1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱 2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit. 5. Father Merrin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually broke her coccyx when the demon makes her hard fall. 7. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 8. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 9 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith. 10. RIP Willian Freidkin😇

First time viewing your channel. Here are a few tidbits you may (or may not) know. Father Merrin, played terrifically by Max von Sydow, was in his early 40s when he played this part! You were guessing at what he was taking; it was nitroglycerin for his heart problems. The demon didn't kill him; his heart failed. The demon's name is Pazuzu and Father Merrin had done battle with it before in Africa. If you will recall, the priests said "...and it damned near killed him." The demon's attacks in the novel were way more vicious. It especially targeted Karl (the butler) because he was a Holocaust survivor. It targeted (and was ruthless) against Father Karras constantly attacking his sexuality. In the infamous crucifix scene, Ellen Burstyn suffered major back injuries. When she was knocked across the room, she had wires attached to her back. She was pulled too hard and that scream she emits is REAL. I believe shooting had to shut down for a while. Hope you enjoyed the movie. You also need to watch Exorcist III - Legion. Almost as good as the first one.

Linda Blair also got permanent back problems from her flopping on the bed scene. 33:33 Max von Sydow? Sadly he isn't. Even considering the fact that Max lived to be almost 91 years old and played Merrin, a man 'bout 30 years older: Von Sydow was 43 years old at the time of filming. He was 44 years old at the Iraq sites in (late?) spring '73, wich were filmed later. BTW the director's cut - this is the better version.Have seen it later and the '73 cut in the cinema around 1990... Greetings. 🙂

You were thinking of Parkinson's, but he was taking nitroglycerin for chest pain. Trust me, anyone who had a parent with angina recognizes those tiny white pills. Treatment for a symptom of bad heart disease. I didn't get to see this until I was around 14, on HBO. But I saw Exorcist II: The Heretic in a theater. Your impression of Dr. Sheldon Cooper rapping was unsettling. My favorites are this, Halloween II (1981), and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. There was no such thing as voice mail yet, and telephone answering machines were just starting to appear. In 1973, people fainted, vomited, had heart problems, stormed out of the theater, ambulances were called. Damien died a hero. He invited the demon in then killed himself to protect Regan, taking the demon with him. A martyr's sacrifice. I disagree with you about the makeup. I think it still holds up. The only CGI in the entire movie is where they erased the wires for the spider-walk down the stairs, added to the extended cut in 2000.

The bed rose very clumsily at first when the stage hands pulled on ropes to raise it. Then the effects director counter-weighted the bed, so it would “want” to rise, and the men had to pull down to prevent it being pulled up by the weights. The result was a bed that truly seemed to float like a feather, ethereally, weightlessly. A magical practical effect.

Speaking of the makeup: Did you realise that Max Von Sydow, who played the elderly Father Merrin, was only 40 years old when he made the movie? They needed a young man who could withstand falls and hours-long exposure to the intense cold of the refrigerated set. This is a singular, ground-breaking movie which seemed to blow up everyone's minds when they originally saw it in 1973.

I saw this when I was 16 at the drive in.... the drive in had to be the scariest place to see it..... also there were tons of rumors about how the film was haunted..... that the demon that appeared on the screen wasn't filmed........they really made it scarier then it is now, nobody had heard of the behind the scenes etc...... this version didn't play tubular bells .. the association make the tune scary.... being 16 I went to bed at night for weeks waiting for my bed to start jumping...... it is truly the scariest movie ever made.....

Certain parts felt slow because they were slow and had been edited out in the theatrical cut. The original flows better and is much more compelling.

Nice job, Jon! You made it though one of my favorite horror classics. The fact that this film still holds up to this day says something about the quality of the film, the casting, the setting, all of it. Amityville is another great classic horror flick to check out. There are 2 versions though. I personally like the original. Happy watching! 🎃

Merrin died of heart failure. Those were nitroglycerin pills he was downing like tic tacs. The movie was more suspense than actual horror. Those medical test scenes were really true to life. CAT scans and MRIs had years to go before they became standard. Even Ultrasounds were not invented yet. The attack in a possession are always to upset the witnesses. The Host is never hurt too much. If the Host was killed, and there is no WILLING host, it goes straight to Abaddon. This was what happened. That

Old voicemails? Answering machines were barely a thing then. LOL. Liked ur reaction. I grew up very religious myself. This terrified me and gave me nightmares for years. Not sure I ever fully recovered. LOL. New to your channel. I'm a fan now. 🙂

To make Regan's room cold enough so the actor's breath would be visible, four industrial air conditioners were used to bring the temperature on set down as low as 40 degrees below zero .

Parents decided to forgo a babysitter... my younger brother and I joined them for a drive-in movie experience. Yes, it was the year of it's original release.

Ash is quite obviously BAD LUCK. Movie got worse as he sat in your lap. He’s doing his job as a black cat, at any rate. And where is the spider crawl??

This movie completely freaked me out when I first saw it! I was literally shocked. And I was raised catholic so you know; they make us terrified of the devil and demons of course. But that’s when you’re raised to believe in that. I have to say that I loved that you needed your cat to give you some kind of comfort. You are so cute! Sorry had to say it. Thank you for your reaction!!🥰⭐️🙌🏼

There were three books everyone was reading in the early 70s, The Godfather, JAWS and this. The movies made from these the books could have easily been Hollywood crap. They weren't.

"Hunky dory" ending? On behalf of the three dead characters I'd say not quite lol.

the amazing thing about this movie is that Lina Blair a child actor did all her own acting except for the cut where she hacks at her privates.
