While I agree with the first half of this speech, and sumption is my fav public intellectual, I think he has failed to grasp an important point which is that all ideologies, including the one he is criticising are constructed partly to deal with societal change. It is right that we have been infected by America which needs to confront a more challenging societal problem, however the purpose of this new constructed ideology (however subconscious) and its dispersal is not to fragment but to give effect to a more collective identity that more groups can feel absorbed in to.

A remarkable reframing of arguments he either doesn't understand or, more likely given his standing, he wishes to traduce. Again and again he claims that "decolonisation" is doing or asserting X or Y where it is not. It's clever but its hardly honest. And its disappointing that its being taken seriously.

The history of 20th century Germany is partly a result of this. He is strongly motivated to distort this reality to advance his case - precisely what he is accusing others of doing - so he makes this easily challenged claim among many others. Given that his whole context is "debunking the myths about ...." that's especially disappointing. I've already pointed out that his argument that Germany was not a colonial state is entirely and obviously false. His point rests on semantics - and I'm convinced he knows this and equally knows that what he's saying is untrue. Easy to swallow if it reinforces your beliefs but easy to refute nonetheless. He repeatedly caricatures the positions taken by those with whom he disagrees, exaggerating and distorting in order to undermine. But by doing so he undermines positions which few actually hold and fails to address the serious points which would actually deserve his attention. It's been a few days since I listened to the speech so I'd have to go back through it to do a more complete dissection (and I have both a life and a job so I hope you'll forgive me if I decline to do so) but altogether it's immensely disappointing from someone so lauded, and in the context of the speech - where and why it was given - it's deeply disrespectful.
