Throughout history, the idea of a perfect world has driven people to extraordinary lengths. Jim Jones' Jonestown and the Jehovah's Witnesses teachings, despite their differences, share striking parallels in their promises of an ideal world, their appeal to disenchanted followers, and their mechanisms of control. Join me as I explore these parallels and delve into the psychological and sociological factors that make such utopian promises so alluring and ultimately dangerous.

So well explained! I’ve been thinking a lot about the similarities and it does worry me for my family in, and all those inside! I do love them all, even though I’m frustrated that they are often so stubborn to notice what’s going on inside the religion and how they are risking the vulnerable to keep the status quo, instead of the right thing to do, just because 9 men are telling them not to pay attention to ANYONE BUT THE ORGANIZATION AND GB!

“When your own thoughts are forbidden, when your questions are not allowed and our doubts are punished, when contacts with friendships outside of the organization are censored, we are being abused, for the ends never justify the means. When our heart aches knowing we have made friendships and secret attachments that will be forever forbidden if we leave, we are in danger. When we consider staying in a group because we cannot bear the loss, disappointment and sorrow our leaving will cause for ourselves and those we have come to love, we are in a cult… If there is any lesson to be learned it is that an ideal can never be brought about by fear, abuse, and the threat of retribution. When family and friends are used as a weapon in order to force us to stay in an organization, something has gone terribly wrong.” ― Deborah Layton, Seductive Poison: A Jonestown Survivor's Story of Life and Death in the Peoples Temple

I was raised a Jw but left at nineteen. I remember when the Jonestown incident went down. The Jw's I was around thought that was pretty funny. And would laugh at those poor misguided people following that false prophet. Now who's following false Prophets. Great work and keep going.

Thank you for this video ! The similarities are spot on. I’ve noticed it, and it sent shivers down my spine when I read “Raven “ by Tim Reiterman a journalist who was present at Jonestown when it all went down and “A Thousand Lives:the Untold story of Jonestown “by Julia Scheeres which tells the experiences of five of the cult members. I was living in Guyana when this occurred and always wondered how can so many people be convinced to follow a man to live in the jungle. The answer is they were “conditioned “ just like current Jehovahs Witnesses. Again, thank you for this video.

It is true that if one goes thru problems wouldn’t they be appealed to a future alternative. That’s Hope! If we separate hope from the true outcome of the faith we see that hope helps society function if you have no hope it’s hard to thrive… we have an example of an individual with cancer who has 6 months to die. We can be influence by the prognosis and the outcome can be influence by the thoughts that there is no hope and they might even die sooner hope - has an individualized effect that can actually extend the life of the person. And even though this can touch on ethics.. we find that thoughts belief influence biological functions-read the biology of belief by Bruce Lipton PhD

We see the same things with fat acceptance. The greater world rejects you and lies to you. We are telling you what you want to believe. That obesity is healthy and beautiful and are a group that accepts you. Unlike Jonestown it’s not a place but a social media construct. Catholicism: offer the heavenly utopia same with Protestantism and orthodoxy do you not see that this is unique to the words found in the Bible
@RossM3838
@RossM3838 3 месяца назад
At first Catholicism may seem cultish, especially in the various orders they have, and with their idea that only the priesthood can interpret scripture but there are big differences. The church is 2000 years old. It’s ideology is well known as are its expectations from parishioners. There are no surprises unlike with cults. The church hierarchy is well known going up to the pope. And if someone leaves the church for whatever reason they will be disappointed but will not come after that person with a vengence or a gun. 500 years ago things were different but not now. This does not excuse the church scandals in any way. The priests took advantage of loyal parishioners and betrayed their trust.

God created man in Genesis 1:26 the point of origin base on the theory of a single common ancenstor among humans and then diversity followed by the migration to other distant parts of the world and the variance in color is one of the most accepted evolutionary factors: melanin was a result of those who were in Africa or South America or region where solar rays would hit the strongest while those in the northern regions would have a lighter colored skin. To god there is no differences between color. This is not a Jonestown/ peoples temple unique belief or acceptance in his time it was an appeal to the outsiders experiencing racism and a temp society that rejected the acceptance of diversity. But the true acceptance observed in the JWs is consistent with the theological view and the evolutionary acceptance of diversity and its micro changes. Why would that be bad. Epistemological Formula observed in your video: Because A(has a trait of b) and C has a (trait of b) A must be C.

@@RobinJacksonZA historically we find that part of the U.S. was in favor of slavery the other side was not. We also had segregation between blacks and whites. Various Protestant groups had such inclination in those times. We also find that with the LDS (Mormons) BUT and here is the but times have changed! Mormons are everywhere of all ethnics same in the JW faith segregation was abolished. Currently Two of the greatest JW apologist are black: Hal Flemings professor of Hebrew( ancient and modern) the other brother is Dr. Edgar Foster PhD in Theology and Philosophy and one of JWs. Africa is one of the countries that JWs are exponentially growing! In essences Christianity teaches us to forgive and move on the fundamental teaching of Christ death and resurrection and forgiveness of sin shows us that YEah mistakes happen even ones that involved racism BUT the very believers have moved away from many of the old things. JWs are progressive similar to science! When a theory is incorrect they move on with something that is more consistent and has backing from evidence. The correction away from the old understand is necessary

I hate to say this, but the promise of a paradise on earth is more of a pipe dream to me. Jesus Christ did not say anything about restoring paradise to this earth. In fact, He said that this old world will pass away but His words will endure forever. Thank you for this eye-opening video.

The teaching you mean the Bible teaching of the Earth paradise the Bible talks about a paradise earth throughout the entire Bible so it’s not like it’s a false teaching. Believing you die and go to heaven or hell that’s a false teaching. We do not have immortals Soul. it’s actually satanic to believe that. Because Satan said you will would not die, but God said you will die, so we die. The dead are awaiting the resurrection where will have a chance to live forever
@Episcopalianacolyte
@Episcopalianacolyte Месяц назад
No. The body and the soul are different things. Satan never said anything about the souls immortality. The death satan was talking about was physical. Even he will go on to eternal punishment in Revelation chapter 11. The JW's teach what atheists think, that once you die, it's "game over". Even though that happens, jehovah god still remains angry, so he creates an entirely new creature and kills him again. ONLY if you live through Armageddon, does one have eternal life. None of those millions Rutherford prophesied about got to see Armageddon. So, according to the JW'S, they ceased to exist. They didn't have the eternal life GOD promised. The resurrection only applies to the physical body. It isn't a new creation, but is the body being brought back to life and rejoins the soul. JESUS offers us eternal life if we only believe in HIM. We also must love others as HE loves us. Once we understand the soul and the body are not the same, then we can understand what eternal life is. The soul returns to GOD when the physical body dies (Eclesiastes 12 : 7). The soul is also called our spirit.

@@Episcopalianacolyte you are quoting, the Bible scripture about Satan being tortured, but Satan is a spirit so fire cannot hurt him. That fire represents internal destruction. No longer will he exist.. here are some logical questions to ask about the lake of fire which is symbolic. The Devil. (Revelation 20:10) As a spirit creature, the Devil cannot be harmed by literal fire.-Exodus 3:2; Judges 13:20. Death. (Revelation 20:14) This is not a literal entity but represents a state of inactivity, the absence of life. (Ecclesiastes 9:10) Death cannot literally be burned. “The wild beast” and “the false prophet.” (Revelation 19:20) Since these are symbols, doesn’t it seem reasonable to conclude that the lake they are thrown into is also a symbol?-Revelation 13:11, 12; 16:13. A symbol of eternal destruction The Bible says that the lake of fire “means the second death.” (Revelation 20:14; 21:8) The first kind of death mentioned in the Bible resulted from Adam’s sin. This death can be reversed by resurrection and will eventually be eliminated by God.-1 Corinthians 15:21, 22, 26. So it’s symbolic what you are quoting in the book of revelation. Also, let me ask you a question. Did David go to heaven? Because the Bible clearly says in acts that he did not go to heaven. Acts 2:44 For David did not ascend to the heavens, but he himself says, ‘Jehovah said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand” The quote after this scripture is referring to Jesus sitting by Gods right hand. Also, Jesus Christ said no man has gone to heaven. John 3:13 Moreover, no man has ascended into heaven but the one who descended from heaven, the Son of man.” that means all the faithful who ones died before Jesus came did not go to heaven, but are asleep. We do not believe in a pagan or atheist beliefs. You actually believe in that your false doctrines got mixed up with true doctrines. All of the pagans mixed satanic teaching with Christians.

@@Episcopalianacolyte Ecc 12:7 is referring to your life is Gods hands now. Meaning that he’s the one that can bring you back to life and the Bible says there’s gonna be a resurrection of the righteous and unrighteous. The inquisition was a horrible time in history along with the bible being in Latin so that only the priest class could read it. People totally depended upon the priests for it's interpretation thereby leaving people at the mercy of any unscrupulous priests. Then when the bible was translated to English the printer, I forgot his name, was hunted and killed for doing so, total control of information. If anybody disagreed even a little they would be accused of witchcraft, them and their whole extended family were put at risk and of course if they had property they had to be extra careful as envious people would start smear campaigns to have them killed at the hands of the Inquisitor General, if a woman was good looking or had skills like healing she would be at risk, nobody was safe.
