What I've gathered so far, sort of in a subconsciously way, Sung is preparing for his father's departure, which I can't even image how hard it will be. I lost an uncle to dementia just a year and a day after his daughter (my cousin) had passed away. The only reason why I'm mentioning this is because I've gone through a couple of podcasts back to back and Sung brings up the guest's parents, fathers in particular. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation on my end. I really hope Sung does well, and so does this podcast. I'm 26 and my relationship with my father has gotten better from what it was maybe 4-5 years ago, but after listening to these guys, it does make me want to spend more time with my folks, especially right now that I don't have any kids or big responsibilities. Cheers to another great episode, looking forward for more content.

If it’s states like CA where they get full wages PLUS tips, I’m not tipping unless it’s a full sit down restaurant. Even then I’ll do 15% MAX. You’re already getting compensated. Sometimes at or above some hard labor jobs. I worked in food service industry for years in CA and never expected tips because we don’t get paid below minimum wage. If it’s in states where workers get tips but only get paid $2/hour, then I’ll tip 20-30%. Sometimes more if the service is exceptional

If you are electronically tipping, guarantee most businesses are keeping it. You want to tip, "cash" it to the single person/s that looked out for you, not the business.

So as of april 1st minimum wage in california went up from 16 dollars to 20 dollars an hour for any fast food or restaurant chains. Businesses have already started on day 1 charging more for there menu items. At starbucks my drink went up $1.50 more already. There is going to be alot of people being laid off due to the pay increase.

I agree with Emelia on being generous with your tips, when you have the ability to brighten someone else's day, then that's what we should do. But I don't feel it's my responsibility to make up for what the company as a whole has decided to pay their employees. I get frustrated with people when they say "we need to raise min wage, I can't afford to live on that". I'm sorry, bit min wage isn't meant to raise a family on, it's to get people to learn how to work an earn an income. Now I do believe that the company's themselves need to actually pay the work value of their employees a livable wage. You bust your butt, you get a bigger paycheck.

I'm with Sung, we are all struggling and we shouldn't be shamed into tipping. I wonder if Em tips the supermarket checker, carpark attendant or tax inspector or are they not worthy!. It should be in the price of the goods and services and you decide. I don't disagree with Em's outlook, its nice to be able to afford tip and share the love.

I'm not tipping for terrible service nor for jobs that are not typical service jobs. Tipping for everything and tipping everyone regardless of their ability to do their job sufficiently just reinforces today's culture of people not taking responsibility for their own behavior.

Emelia needs to look at tipping from a normal person perspective and not from someone who is in position to tip whatever whenever. You cant tip for bad performance, only reinforces that bad performance to continue and never change for the better. Jmo

This new craze of businesses providing the “tip for nothing” option is the employer’s attempt to have the customer further subsidize payroll for them. Similar to the way the government taxes the same dollar 6 times, the service business guilt trips more $$ from the customer. Also, I am a merit tipper. I tip 30-50% for good service. Before I do add my tip to a card transaction I confirm from the employee that they keep ALL their tips and aren’t roped into this “community/shared tipping” bullsh**. If they must tip out, I give their tip in cash. If your a cook, busboy, hostess and your angry that I don’t want my tip to go to you, than get a job as a server and take a huge hourly pay cut and become a server and survive on tips. Sorry not sorry. That is all. Thanks

It's because in the US we don't pay the service industry workers enough, or anyone for that matter. It's always been part of the culture. It's a trend that needs to change. Pay people enough to live a respectable life and tips would not be expected for everything.
