One of my first experiences of writing something I really wasn't sure was any good or not. It feels like ages ago now, something like summer...2002? I texted my friend Simon Eugene and said "text me a song title" and he responded with "Another Door Closes". And so i started writing. For the second chord I just figured what happens if you do an E shape but just shift the whole shape a string towards me....made this weird discordant kind of weird sounding chord, don't even to this day know what it's called - but that just says more about my lack of musical training rather than the weirdness of the chord... I remember there was a track called Last Good Day Of The Year on the radio a lot around that time, by Cousteau, when I sang the chorus I got paranoid that it sounded too much like their song....of course, this happens the whole time when you're writing songs, you come up with something and because some inflection or some tiny bit of the melody relates to something you've heard before you think, oh no am I copying them? am I allowed to use that? The answer is always in your heart, not in the melody itself. You know whether you are copying something or making it up yourself, whether it is your song. Think how many similar melodies there are everywhere, and isn't it extraordinary - relatively - how rarely we listen to something and think it sounds like another song! How sensitively our brains or souls or hearts or a mixture of all three are calibrated so that the vibration that is created via melody lyrics rhythm pace and intonation (and perhaps intention too!) can come across as a completely different thing even though if you looked at simply the notes, the melody might be incredibly similar.
So yeah, I wrote this song and for a while wasn't sure what I thought of it. My then girlffriend didn't like it. But my friend John Howlett, (the long time manager of Hobgoblin music who had a whole other story about plagiarising.....suggesting that he had actually written the main melody of Coldplay song Trouble and Chris Martin had stolen it.....who knows the truth in these things.....but John was pretty convinced...) heard Another Door Closes once and from that time on it has been his favourite song of mine.....Eventually I would get really in to this song. When it finally came time to record it for an album, five years later, we got lucky and Bent Van Looy played the exceptional piano part for it, overdubbing over the original live acoustic take the improvised piece you hear here. Laura Fares masterfully managed to put drums down on the track after everything else was on and with no click track, the tempo going all over the place and then Simon Gogerly (who had just mixed a coupe of tracks for U2 the summer before, and before that the classic anthem All Together Now by The Farm) mixed it beautifully....and a year later I was fortunate enough to have it chosen to be on the Season opener of Grey's Anatomy.....a programme that until then I had never heard anything about.....I still love to play it, but often forget to.
