Great stuff! Jonty's playing was what first inspired me to pick up a bass guitar when I was 9 years old watching the BBC Proms! 11 years later and I'm majoring in performance at Newcastle University and still playing. Forever grateful to the Ukes!
When I check back today I see there have been 4757 views and 488 likes. there a 2 thumbs down's. Those two obviously have boarderline personality disorder and we are supposed to have empathy for them. I don't.
Yes, Now there are 4. They most likely all have 'flu' like symptoms too. They are outnumbered by another couple of hundred likes. Perhaps we should put them on a small island somewhere? That one the French used to test nuclear weapons would be good.
Fascinating stuff, Jonty :-) Some seriously enviable instruments there. My daughter started playing uke about 18 months ago and is seriously obsessed with it. To say the Ukes have left an impression on her would be an understatement. On the strength of watching you play, she asked if she could have u-bass a few months ago - result: 1 u-bass later and a very happy ten year old ! She's just been learning 'Sweet Dreams'. Also, you take whistling to a new level! Thanks again for the great entertainment during this difficult time :-)
Tobe Richards I carried my uke around when I was a child & would break out a tune when I got the urge. Of all the instruments I played the ukulele was the most fun. Tell her to keep up the good work and be safe. 👍☮️🌞🦠😷🎼🎶
Loved the video Jonty. I can see I’ll have to expand my collection of hats to wear when I play my U-Basses. If they help me play as well as you do it’ll be completely worth it. The photos of you in your younger days are wonderful.
Sitting in then sun at the back door and watching “The Hat Man” lovely and slightly off centre as all ukulele players need to be. Roll on then day we can hear the lot of you in full cry. Amacf
I love the way you always look from left to right when you’re playing - so groovy. Should have been seeing you in Germany this summer-thanks for the UOGB uploads 👌
I have one of the Stevens Jonty Bankes signature Ukulele Bass guitars, and I love it! Met Jonty in MD a few years ago before a concert. Too bad I didn't have the Uke, I'd have had him sign it!
As a non-musician, am I constantly learning things from these videos. I was not aware, until this hour, of the importance of hat choice in playing various styles of music.
Thank you Jonty❣️. We are sitting here in lockdown in Washington State and so enjoyed your bass collection demo and the photos of your life of being a great bassist! Heading into grab my U-Bass immediately 🌈. Stay safe and hope you are not feeling too lonely for your home in England.
I've wanted to watch this video for ages, but I saved myself until I could get a bottle of whisky from the "Click and Collect". So now armed with my little glass, I've thoroughly enjoyed your collection of one ukulele, hats and bass guitars. Perfect Jonty. My hat collection is quite lacking.
Good to see you Jonty - last time we spoke I was helping you load your gear into your VW van outside the 'Saucy Kettle' in Surbiton you'd just done a gig with Robin Bibi You were just about to join UOGB so what's that 20years! Stay safe 😀
of course I am one of the few! I've been waiting for this episode since the serie begun, because Jonty kindly answered me when I asked for the bassukes he played with the UOGB. I am not a fan of JB bass, but your first wife seem to be a really good one! your pleasure to play her is so sincere.
That was fascinating Jonty, apart from the fact that the bass was, like the uke, "good", ie has 4 strings I knew nothing about the instrument. It's always great to watch someone who not only knows what they are doing but enjoys it too. Thank you, a real treat, absolutely smashing !
Thanks Jonty, I really enjoyed this. My son plays the bass guitar and I know how important you are in any band. You have a lovely voice, too! I wish I could see the UOGB live.....maybe one day! I discovered you on RU-vid during lockdown. Another good thing that's happened during this sad time! Stay safe xxx
UkuleleOrchestra You answered me...I'm so chuffed! I wish you the best of luck getting back on the road. I hope you come to Italy one day. In the meantime, I'll continue devouring everything I can find here on RU-vid. I've watched "Life on Mars" a million times (Jonty...that voice!) and "Thank you for the music" at least once a day! You're all brilliant! Xxx
Great to see the collection Jonty, too many years ago to remember we had a number of e-mail chats about your Crafter after I’d bought one after seeing you using yours with the Ukes, nice to see all the Jazzes and the cute Ukebass...now all I’ve got to do is get me a collection of those Jonty bass hats.. keep rocking man and stay safe.
I'm here Jonty - you may remember me from the Nova Scotia ceilidh in 2005. I switched to bass very soon afterwards - and love it. Thank you for doing this and being my inspiration, Sue
Thanks for that!! When my husband decided to join us uke players, I tried to talk him into getting a bass; he ended up with a tenor. We have one man in our group who has a bass. He rarely comes to practice, but when he does, that bass adds SO much to the songs.I didn't realize that you are "stuck" in Germany. Any idea when you might be able to return to Great Britain? My husband and I were stuck in Hawaii a month longer than planned, but finally were able to get a flight home, arriving here May 10. All the best to you. Cheerio!! Oh, by the way, when I was 12, my father (who was in the US Air Force) got stationed at Lakenheath AFB, and we lived in Newmarket for 6 months before going on to Germany. It was a very cold winter, especially having come from Texas, but what a nice little town. We loved watching the racehorses being ridden across the heath as we traveled to school on the bus.
Jonty lives in Hamburg and has a place in London for when he is working, so he is actually home for the 'Shelter in Place'. Luckily the regulations kicked in during a week between tours so everyone was safely home.
I am a baritone ukulele and u-bass player In Alberta, Canada. I loved this video which answered my email question about the mysterious u-bass with the metal strings. I've been going through all the UOGB videos trying to read the Stevens logo. It is quite impossible to decipher. I am pleased to finally find out where this u bass originated and would like to get my hands on one some day. The UOGB is amazing and the videos are so well done. I would love to see you live.
not a bass player but UOOGB fan for years . Loved every note and your inimitable style. Enjoyed watching you appreciate each instrument. Pretty sure you have aa special place for the fret less. Thank you to all the members for your presence during lock down..
Hi Jonty (take 2) as a bass afficianado I'm a little surprised we didn't hear 3 or 4 bars of the greatest bass rift of all time from ' the chain' (Fleetwood mac) !!
Great to see the rhythm behind the orchestra, I don’t play bass yet but am into my guitar (6string classical) and a concert use too, I feel a bass uke coming on too just to keep me active instead of tv. More more more from you all.
Oh Jonty, that was WONDERFUL!!! I'm a beginner tenor uke player but my heart belongs to the UBass and I must admit it's your part I'm listening and watching for in all the videos. Fascinating tour of your collection, and gosh, your "first wife" Fender... No wonder she stays home and safe! Thanks for the joy you bring one of the (wannabe) 3....
Ha!!! Very enjoyable Jonty😉although I'm a ukulele i was very interested your collection with hat's of course😀all you guy's are the tops at your profession 💖🎶and it sure looks like you had a busy exciting life, many thanks and you all keep safe also😎💖
Very nice Jonty. I'm one of two bass uke players for The CC Strummers in Los Angeles. Started playing bass uke 6 years ago and have accumulated 30 bass ukes/mini bass guitars, all between 22" and 25" scale. I've taken lessons with Denny Croy from McCabe's Guitar in Santa Monica. I'd love for you to see my collection, posted on the Talk Bass forum and Uke Freaks on Facebook under KohanMike. My understanding is that Owen Holt of Road Toad Music originated the U-bass and license it to Kala.
Nice collection Jonty, I'm a string bass player really and only have one bass guitar, it is a JD Supernatural (fretless), check him out if your ever in the market for more, and tend to stick to jazz/standards music. You and the Uke's work though do bring hours of excellent entertainment, humor and musicianship for all three of the people watching now.👍👍👍
Loved seeing your bass collection and hearing you play them! Great and the hats are fun too. My next life I’m gonna be a bass player for now I’ll be a virtual groupie!!!! Lol!
Jonty I am a faux bass player, I play bass with a couple of trad jazz bands and a couple of big bands, really I am a tuba player and I dabble on bass trombone. I wish I had your technique! Dave Skinner
Jonty, you have a really nice touch on that fretless Jazz bass, you should get yourself a fretless U Bass for the stage. I'm sure George will buy you one. 😊
Hi Jonty Brilliant!!!! You have some great basses, but i love the Crafter Uke Bass you played at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 2007. It must be without doubt one of your favourite riffs on the theme from "Shaft"? I watch it over and over again,i bet you really enjoyed that,it was awesome!!!! Kind regards Lew. (York) P.S When are you coming to the Barbican in York?
Loved this! Sometimes people only start to realise how necessary a bass line is (a) when it's missing, or (b) when you just hear the bass and spontaneously whistle along the main melody. Btw, listening to your bass lines here - do you do jam sessions at UOGB, too? Or did I just miss them?
@@UkuleleOrchestra Oops - my mistake. I was rather thinking about: Do you, the members of the orchestra, jam along among yourselves occasionally, and would that be something the likes of us can listen in to somewhere?
Hey Jonty! Could listen to you all day! Seriously! Got myself a Kala U-Bass (borrowed) and really trying to learn from scratch, oooofff not easy. Got any pointers? (learn scales?) Would also love to see more of your work! Auf wiedersehen, moin! Hope to see you in Groningen, NL again. Simone❤️ 🧢🎩👒⛑️
Thank you very much from amateur bass uke player! Ever thought about writing a book, or at least series of articles (or videos) specifically on that interesting instrument?
Finally some normal instruments :). Hofner is a real beautie and fretless sounds sick! What have you done with acoustic basses? I was counting on hearing how that Crafter sounds without amp. I am also courious of that Tanglewood- my experiences with that brand aren't the greatest ones.
How cool was that, I have a grandkid who play bass for high school and his sister . Hahaha good times thanks...lol made me laugh three people lol three hundred
I have a Kala UBass but with wound strings and you can now get short scale bass strings, however mine was made with a tension rod in the neck to support the extra tension created by the metal strings, so I would not recommend them for an instrument that was made for rubber strings. JB
@@UkuleleOrchestra I have an Oscar Schmidt Ubass. I'll have to see if it has a tension rod. I know the Kalas do, of course. I really enjoyed your video!
