I totally agree with Chris about putting a limit on pickleball paddle power or else the game is becoming just too much like tennis. Pickleball should be about finesse and strategy instead of ‘who has the most powerful paddle wins’. One of the guy in my pickleball group plays with a Gearbox Pro and most of his volleys, forehands and overheads are just outright winners - this paddle generate such ridiculous power that it takes away the rallying in the game - which is the most fun part of pickleball.

I agree 100 percent, i think its the mass behind the paddle creates more springboard effect on the ball with the 16, almost like a delay springboard. I like tysons 14 but i am an Invikta guy and they are almost exactly same shape. I love the hyperion the best for versatility.

No one seems to address the health benefits received by some paddles, I now play with a Gearbox Pro, I'm 73 & while using other paddles, I've experienced elbow & wrist inflammation, after doing some research on the Gearbox Pro, I concluded that because of how it absorbs vibrations and the forces from impact, it may be a healthier alternative, it worked, no more tennis elbow....!

Chris's suggestion to use a slower ball as a solution to the issue of increasingly powerful pickleball paddles is an interesting one, but it's important to consider the potential drawbacks and limitations of this approach. A slower ball might not address the root of the problem, which is the technological advancement in paddle design. As paddles continue to evolve, simply changing the ball might not be a sufficient long-term solution. Players might still find ways to maximize power with new paddle technologies, leading to a continuous cycle of adjustments in equipment standards. Using a slower ball might seem like a straightforward solution to counteract the increasing power of pickleball paddles, it could introduce new challenges and might not be effective in maintaining the integrity and appeal of the sport. A more comprehensive approach, possibly involving stricter regulations and standards for paddle manufacturing, might be necessary to address the issue effectively.

Happy birthday Will. To your question. I think paddle regulation is the only way to go as there is too much variation in balls (and environments) to put the regulation on balls. The USAP regulation on balls is a bounce height of 30" - 34" when dropped from 78". That's a huge difference and doesn't even take into account the differences in temperature, humidity, and altitude. And since there is no way to adjust balls (e.g. via inflation) for different climates I see no way to regulate balls unless USAP dramatically adjusts the tolerance to make all balls bounce the same (which would be great for the sport). And glad to see Chris understand the situation here in South FL. People rave about the X-40 up north but it sucks here in FL. As soon as they are left in the sun or played with for a game or two they turn into marshmallows with no restitution. If you are using an X-40 day after day would you also use tennis balls day after day instead of bring a new can? The analogy is real.

Great pod one of your best. Congratulations on the gold!!! That's a tough question on limiting the paddle or the ball. Would limiting the speed of the ball also limit the spin? I'm not sure??? I'm so close to pulling the pin on the Colin. I play a hybrid shape paddle now but the swing weight and twist weight seems like the Scorpius is the right choice. Looking forward to more content from you.

I'm completely convinced that CJ was using a gen 3 Joola in his mixed dubs bronze match from LA last weekend, and a completely different model in men's gold. There is such a noticeable difference in the musical pitch of the sound that CJ's paddle makes in each match. When compared to Tyson's Magnus (which makes the same pitch in both matches) CJ's men's doubles paddle pitch is a major 7th higher (or 11 halfsteps higher). In mixed dubs, CJ's paddle pitch is only a minor 3rd higher (or 3 halfsteps higher). The only way this could happen is by using a significantly different paddle, no doubt. Think of it like a drum set. CJ's gen 3 is like a tom tom and his (presumably) gen 2 is like a snare.

Cap the paddles using a coefficient of restitution test. Capping only the ball results in vast differences between players with different paddles. As the paddles continue to become more powerful the ball would need additional reductions in speed. This would result in most "standard" paddles becoming unplayable or at least noncompetitive.
@McDadden

I've been saying it out loud to my screen for months that they way to go is to regulate the ball and slow it down. Glad to hear others coming around. Speeding up the paddles only slows down the game and makes it boring.

A slower ball would be the least complicated solution. But I'm not a fan of playing with soft or dead balls. I prefer that crisper feel that the faster playing balls provide. Gen2 thermo power levels with a fast playing balls seems like the sweet spot.
@thehiddenfamily

I think the idea of pickleball that has always separated it from tennis has always been the kitchen. The introduction of power paddles has diluted this. Paddles are becoming more and more powerful and it’s slowly turning this game into let’s see how hard we can hit the ball and it rewards players not for their skill but just for the fact that nobody can react fast enough to hit the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if single tournaments move away from cat and mouse and completely neglect the kitchen and become purely baselines rallies because nobody can run to the kitchen fast enough. I think the consumer market for pickleball is crazy. Joola released the most powerful and poppy paddles and convinced everyone that they should pay even more money to still have the same QC issues while also turning the game into a degraded form of tennis. Meanwhile the pickleball associations are worried about serves being a weapon even though they are not really enforcing it on players. It’s amazing. 😂

i think most of the issues with paddles being "too hot" are rectified by using an x40 ball. vulcans are pretty good, too. the era of the dura is basically over, and that's a good thing for the sport. i wouldnt mind if the paddles were dialed back slightly, but i also believe we're at the limit now - and that's fine.

1:00:30 Chris, if you look at the shadow of the drop shot you called out, the center of the ball is out. Part of the shadow does hit the line, but most of it is outside the line. For me I'm with you Chris and Zane about more spin and control would make the game funner and better to watch. The "Trainer" idea sounds fun too. The Gen 3 has a patent cost to consider like the Gearbox Pro. They got creative to get around GB patents with the foam tech. Chris is now a 5.0, congrats. Make it a shrit. For sure slow the ball.

I demoed all the gen 3 Joola. Coming from 14mm CRBN 1 and more recently 14mm Forza Mach 1 the easiest to transition to was the 14mm Hyperion. Basically, the same shape and weight. The dink game was good, but the resets were harder to control. Perhaps with lead tape at the base might reduce the pop-ups. The spin was slightly less than the Forza but very very close. With the increase velo with the spin does provide an advantage to the serves. The biggest positive was hitting my one hand backhand which sometimes doesn't have the depth or pop I would like. With the Joola my backhand easily hit more depth with a smaller swing. I my control was worse, but I think that is something that would improve with time. I'm 50/50 on purchasing one.

Enjoyed the podcast. I made it to the kitchen. There are substantially less companies that manufacturers pickleballs then paddles, so it would be easier to regulate them. The pickleball governing body would need to develop more precise and stringent regulations that companies would need to follow in manufacturing their pickleballs to slow them down. Also, require tournaments to use only certain types of pickleballs based upon if the tournaments are played in hotter or colder climates.

For the kitchen discussion, if paddles are playing different based on the geographic region then it seems the ball would be the most consistent thing to control. However, if the ball plays different as well, then it's prob best to cap the max power of a paddle. Either way, if the geographic region changes things that drastically it's a very difficult problem to solve.

Actually, I really thought that Ben was using the new paddle and that he didn’t adjust well to it. So many of his return serves went out, his resets very high. Chris said that these new paddles are power and I never thought Ben needed more power, his play is about strategic placement and resets. To be clear, you do not pop a ball to him because he already has the power to put it away. I do think Colin and Anna are using their new paddles because they are on fire right now.

Definitely think they should cap paddle performance as the starting point. After doing that then I'll vote for controlling the pace of the game with the ball since it seems like there are a lot less variables to manage for the ball than with paddle construction. If that's true, then it should be easier to measure and control the performance of the ball than it is to do that with the paddle. Just throwing my 2 cents into the kitchen discussion...

More on the Joola stuff... their site was so congested on launch day, when you would go to place your order, I got an error saying it didn't go thru, and to try again. So I did, and got the same error. So I said screw it, will wait a little bit for the site to calm down and start working again once people chilled out... Well lo' and behold both of those orders did in fact get placed, I checked my email and had 2 order confirmations. I wrote in to cancel one duplicate order, and the funds have still have not been credited back to my account. I emailed a rep again, and asked about it, and they said their finance team is on it, but that issue happened to so many other people as well, they have a long list of people to refund. I ended up cancelling both my orders all together because my main first order, had been in "processing" for a whole week now - so now I am waiting on both order totals to get credited back to my bank account... if I do end up wanting to get one I will just order thru PBC.

The new paddles will just require everyone to adapt. That's what makes the game fun and challenging. I like it. If we want to be "purists", then we should all go back to using the plywood paddles. Regarding the US Open event and how much better it is, that is encouraging to hear. I have played in one PPA event and it was a mess. For the price that PPA charges and how the tournament is ran, it is a joke IMO. One way you can compare is the video quality of the RU-vid videos that PPA posts. Someone needs to tell them it's 2024 and we can record video in a higher resolution. Have sound on the video that works without bleed in from the other announcer, etc. I can go on, but you get the hint.

I don’t mind the evolution of the new paddles, for younger players who’ll carry the sport forward, it’s a good thing. When I get a kid who wants to play “whack a mole” I just keep ball low, then watch him launch a few out the back of the court. The problem for me is I’m 59 with fast hands but my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. In certain conditions like shadows or bad lighting, I lose valuable milliseconds trying to pick up the ball in flight, and that’s when it becomes dangerous. Really, it’s just a matter of choice- know what level you are and play within your capabilities.

I'm in the same boat and agree with what you say. When the time comes that I can't keep up, rather than drag everyone else down to my level by restricting the games evolution, I'll adjust the level I play at........ or get a more powerful paddle :)

To answer the kitchen question, the paddles definitely need a cap. If you try to only change the ball, companies will just continue to make their paddle stronger and stronger until the softness of the ball won’t matter anymore.

I would agree that the Ruby was and continues to be the most overly-hyped paddle thus far this year. If the Azul and J2K are as good, the price alone gives them a leg up.

Trainer paddle tournament would be cool. They do snoopy pole tournaments for fishing. Very good and fun idea

I live in Florida and yea pretty much all the balls we play with in one session pretty much become a marshmallow so I think slower balls would probably be better for the game

Slow the paddles down. For amateur play you can use whatever ball you want so having powerful paddles can still be a problem.

Slow the balls down...pause... but overall more power is cool but honestly more spin would be dope ppa/uspa should push in that direction.
