I quit alcohol when I got tired of being fat and depressed. I got tired of faking my confidence and happiness. I got tired of people feeling so embarrassed for you that they leave you out of pictures. People don’t take your picture when you’re fat. I got tired of being a half ass mother. I got tired of enabling an abusive husband (ex now). I got tired of my damn excuses. Quitting alcohol saved my life. Nov 21, 2018

It's so hard at the beginning. When you quit, you have a void you feel like you need to fill. You have to rewrite every single thing afterwards: your headspace that holds negative thoughts, your coping mechanisms to life in general, your downtime to how you can actually make things enjoyable with the substance absence, etc... you wrapped your life literally on this staple, it gets you to the end of the day with some soothing comfort. To take it away and to be so vulnerable to the time you have, you have to start making it more productive. After I quit, I shot up my productivity. I stayed busy bc that's what alcohol did for me. Sip and keep sipping. Well, now I sculpt, paint, picked up my violin again, craft, learned how to sew, shared it outward so I find some fulfillment with it... you just have to keep applying the separation from that past. It's hard, but oh my, oh my oh my oh my its WORTH it.

I quit getting drunk when I was hugging my toilet, puking and crying while my wife rubbed my back. She was pregnant and our daughter was due in a month. I had work that morning and showed up still drunk from my bender. That was it. I’ve been sober for a little over 2 years now. I do miss it, and there are times when I want to say “fuck it, I need a god damn drink”. But I don’t want my kids to ever see me in that position. We had another kid, my first son last Saturday and I really need to be the man I needed when I was a kid for him. The father I needed for all of my kids.

I was a heavy alcoholic from 25-28. Broken bones, 5 days awake, holding cells, hallucinations, hospitals. Hardest time of my life. Two years clean. Edit: For those asking how I was awake for 5 days when alcohol is a sedative, I'll explain. Alcohol works on your gaba receptors depresseing you CNS. To compensate your CNS becomes very exited, and as a result if you stop drinking you can be in a sitaution where you can have seizures (i had preseizure symptoms). I saw flickering in my eyes for almost 7 days. No sleep and walking up and down my hallway (a condition called akethisis), before I finally went to A&E (that id been rejected from the first time). I only drank, nothing else. I'm 3 years sober now, and life is gift.

“ Addiction is a substitute for not having something meaningful to wake up for .. “ Jordan B Peterson Amen to that... 🙏🙏🙏
@kilmoturtles1
@kilmoturtles1 5 лет назад
It's not a great comment, IMO. IMO, there is NOTHING wrong with addiction... it's just wrong what your addiction is. What I mean by that is, there IS healthy addiction. I'm addicted to exercising all the time... is there a problem with that at all? I don't believe there is. So I'm addicted to exercise , and I still have something meaningful to wake up for. And people that are addicted to drugs still have something meaningful to wake up for, they just have other underlying problems that lead them to a negative addiction. Addiction is just going after that dopamine hit that we all love! There are ways that are healthy for us , our body, and people around us, and there are ways that are unhealthy for all of those things. People give addiction a bad name. Whenever you hear the word addiction you mostly think of drugs, but there are a sh1t ton more unhealthy addictions out there that get no attention at all; even though it does the same things as drugs, which is just activating the dopamine that we all have in our body. What about consumerism? Better believe that those people are just as addicted as the heroin addict down the street. If they are not out buying something, they feel like crap.. so they have to keep buying things to feel their void. They may not go through severe withdrawals, but it is definitely an addiction. You won't hear people call the millionair that has 3 boat houses an addict, but they definitely are addicts. In any case.... people just need to find healthy addictions. We are all addicts of something... we just need to recognize when it is healthy for us or not.
@mustafabaris9681
@mustafabaris9681 5 лет назад
Jim Smith Obviously you are not addicted to reading , because if you were , you would realize that what I wrote was NOT a comment , but a quote ... And I hope that since you are “ addicted “ to exercise , you should have enough brain cells to differentiate between a comment and a quote ... Also , what makes you think addiction to exercise is a good thing ? Just because it happens to be an activity that is considered healthy doesn’t mean it will be healthy if it’s overdone ... You will do more harm than good to your body if you overdo it ...
@shadowflare7230

@@kilmoturtles1 You have no idea what addiction even is. Addiction is doing something even if you want it to stop. Search for a video about a woman who is addicted to exercising, it's not a thing of beauty at all. Addiction is all about taking something to a dangerously unhealthy level
@MrSidney9
@MrSidney9 5 лет назад
@@kilmoturtles1 if you look up the definition of addiction, you could have saved yourself that long pretentious comment. Addiction is bad by definition, because a key component of that definition is that there's interference with the normal functioning of your life. If exercising is not severely interfering with say your relationships and job, then it is not addiction. Having a passion or dedication to something doesn't automatically translate to addiction. Btw, I hear there are few cases of real addiction to exercising.

@@shadowflare7230 There are many terms for the word addiction; one of them being ' addictive behavior', which is ' behavior that is rewarding and reinforcing' I said that addiction is not always negative, and you're just perpetuating that stereotype. I am a recovering alcoholic myself and went to rehab where I was with other addicts. They all said the same thing to me. There's no tv ads when you're watching football on Sunday for meth. You don't go to your local restaurant and see people openly smoking crack. You don't go into your local gas station and just see heroin in the fridge. I'm not saying by any means that any drug is easy to quit but at least with a lot of the other harder drugs it's pretty easy to avoid the temptation as long as you hang around the right people and avoid the places where you know it might be thrown at you. With alcohol, in most places you can get it within minutes and it's constantly being thrown around in your face no matter where you go.

I figured this might be a good place to share my story... Hope this helps someone I grew up in a drug infested home with parents that abused substances including alcohol. I left home at a young age and ended up joining the USMC. I experienced a lot of traumas in the service and when I got out, I started to self-medicate with Alcohol. As soon as I started to abuse Alcohol my entire life seemed to halt. Things that were very important just didn’t matter anymore. Goals I had seemed distant and out of reach and overtime my life started to spiral out of control. When I abused alcohol, I also seemed to abuse everyone close to me. My marriage struggled, other personal relationships struggled and overall, my life became a struggle. This, combined with the PTSD I suffer from was almost too much. It wasn’t until I was arrested for domestic violence that things started to get better. I had to hit rock bottom. The courts ordered that I got treatment for my PTSD and that I had to quit drinking. Because I didn’t want to go to jail, I was forced to do this. My life began to change for the better almost INSTANTLY. My interpersonal relationships were able to be repaired. My marriage improved and my overall happiness improved. The goals that seemed so distant now seems just right out of grasp. I was able to refocus my life. I went from living paycheck to paycheck with severe depression and anxiety to making over 200k a year. My mental state is overwhelmingly joyful. It seems to me that Alcohol took the place of everything that was important in life. Once I removed that, it was almost like this fog was lifted and I was able to step back and evaluate what was happening. I have not had a single drink in 9 years.

Notes on Alcoholism: - Some people were just born with a predisposition towards becoming an alcoholic. Don't blame yourself if this is you. - When you drink throughout your life to the point where it is no longer fun anymore, it will never be fun again. - The last stop for everyone on the alcoholism train is vodka. Be careful. - Learn to be bored. This would cure a surprisingly large percentage of the alcoholic population.

@@jillianwalsh5498 The next question is how? Meditation, which is a difficult thing even at the best of times. Trying it while going through withdrawals is not recommended. Curl up into a ball and wait for the withdrawals to pass. If you are drinking like 15+ a day you will need medical help. Otherwise, just stay down, forget everything else. And do it again if you fall back off the wagon.

@@juanpedro7645 Vodka is more potent and therefore gets you drunk faster and gets your blood alcohol level higher than an equivalent amount of beer would have. Vodka is also cheaper and more accessible than nearly all other alcoholic beverages. Many severe alcoholics end up drinking a handle (1.5L) of vodka in a day and that is territory that will result in catastrophic health consequences that have a high likelihood of resulting in death. Try looking up the health effects of beer at 5% abv and vodka at 40% abv. Even if you drank the same alcohol amount of each, e.g. 1 12oz beer vs 1.5oz vodka shot, the vodka has been shown to produce worse health effects than the beer in the long run

Being "just born with a predisposition" doesn't justify the choices one makes. It's still your own personal responsibility what you choose to do, just because something makes it harder to make better choices, doesn't negate that fact. But, it does mean you should have compassion on yourself. You cut yourself a bit of a break, but still take responsibility for your own choices.

People only want to see you succeed if you are not doing better than them. The thing is. I feel better than ever. Because I do what makes me happy instead of trying to fit in with people who don't support me and my dreams. Mads I was only drinking 2-4 beers a day but it really got in the way of what I wanted to do with my life. Instead of reading or playing the piano, I’d just crave a drink and do that instead. I’d say that tomorrow I’m going to do stuff with my life, tomorrow I’m going to improve myself and stop my bad habits. I recently shaved off my beard when I became fully sober from drinking and smoking weed everyday. Whenever I crave a drink I look at my new beard growing in, and realize that none of what I was doing before was worth it. I seriously almost caved in today and almost bought a nice tall boy, a tall boy ain’t gonna hurt anyone right? I can’t go back to it now though. I do miss drinking, but I realize that if I continue doing it 10 years will go by in a flash with, again, zero improvement to my condition or well-being. Some people are honestly fine drinking once in a while, maybe once a week, I get it. Then there’s people like me who would depend on it, and not look forward to anything else but that. I had to admit I had a problem and that I was an alcoholic.

Check out the work of Dr. James Milam who wrote the best seller, "Under the Influence". His clinic's had a rate of close to ZERO recidivism because he taught them to go on a hypoglycemic diet. And avoid antidepressants like the plague they are because they bottom out the blood sugar & produce overwhelming cravings for alcohol in those who have never even tasted alcohol before! But beware because going off an antidepressant rapidly drops the blood sugar even more! Withdrawal must be EXTREMELY GRADUAL over months, but generally years of slowly tapering!

For me, the worst thing about quitting alcohol was realising how much of my social interactions were based/dependent upon drinking; going to the bar/club with friends, house parties, drinking to improve my confidence talking to women etc, it led to me being distanced from my friends for being "that guy that doesn't drink", yet I don't regret it. The poison is no good for me, and I'm glad to rid of it, as there's a nasty alcoholism streak in my family.

The bit that comes after is the hard part, when your phone stops ringing, you have to deal with feelings, you have to learn how to socialise as an adult, find ways to fill your time, deal with peer pressure, shrug off being labelled as boring, go on dates sober etc etc. Good luck to anyone in this journey

That was a genuinely fun conversation to see. Jordan is often portrayed as an angry man, so it was nice to see him shown a lot more light hearted here, while still being thoroughly accurate and thoughtful with his words. I can very much align with the feeling of needing Alcohol to be able to socialise. I miss the organization I founded and the homes we opened but I miss my family like nothing else. I'm proud of you and please believe that you are an overcomer and you can do this before you burn all of your bridges. My father killed himself and now I see how and why he did it because ive thought the same thing many times because we both are and was bipolar. It's a tough disease that I was born with and it's the most intense type 1 for me and OCD and ADHD on top of it. As big of a mess that I am, I still have to remind myself daily that I was on parole 6 months out of prison when the community got behind me and we did great things together and there is still more life ahead of me I just have to want to live it. I would be a hypocrite to instruct you to live life sober and to the fullest and not pull up my own boot straps and get back on that productive path again. If you ha e an addiction personality do not think you can do it alone. And find something positive to be addictive to because I've learned that having bipolar cause me to obsess over whatever is giving me happiness and for me it was church and others it may be AA or NA but you have to connect with like minds to help you along. HOW TO BE SAVED: Repent: Acts 20:21 Authorized (King James) Version “testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Corinthians 7:9 "Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing." KJV. 2 Corinthians 7:10 "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." KJV. Understand YOU ARE A SINNER and only The Lord Jesus Christ can save you: Romans 3:20-26 Authorized (King James) Version “20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” Romans 3:10 "as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" KJV. Put your faith in the Gospel: 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" KJV For added assurance of salvation, call upon the name of The Lord (The Lord Jesus Christ) for salvation: Romans 10:8-13 "But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
