In the book, Albert & Shug were a couple. Shug got pregnant before they got married. That’s why her father disowned/shunned her & raised her 3 kids. Albert wanted to marry her but his father forbade it. The girl singing “God’s Tryna Tell You Something” was their daughter. Also, Celie didn’t even know Mister’s name until Shug said it. And yes, they had a lesbian relationship in the book. Mister did pay for Nettie & the kids to come home. I guess that was him trying to “do right by her” & break the “curse” she put on him.

Love the insights! I'm thinking about reading the book before I watch the new version, I'm interested to see what else they elaborate on. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video!

@@JordangeVision I’d be interested in hearing your opinion when you’re done with both (or either). I’ll keep my opinion to myself until then.

Tarshi, (who is a victim of FGM) and her husband end up in England fighting a lawsuit. Her story is told in Alice Walkers book, 'Possesing the Secret of Joy'.

It is very compelling to watch those who don’t quite understand the generational trauma these eras have caused. I appreciate you watching tho. What happened to Sofia (and the archetype she is representing) and your confusion about how the story reverbs in the truth of today - can be a letdown at times… but I suppose watching this film can be a good step in some sort of direction. For our people, this isn’t just a film - it is just our story. I’m happy you watched. You missed some emotional points, but I think this just comes down to how you’re able to receive the tale. Don’t stop trying to learn about it. The odds we are at as a nation, is more about guilt and shame, shrouded in fake equality and blame in the wrong directions. This takes more than just a watch. It takes deep seated empathy. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for your feedback, it's important to remember that when you watch any reaction video like this, you're getting a genuine first impression. Often times I'll catch something else while editing, as I did catch the earlier detail about Shug's father then. As I mentioned when I watched 12 Years A Slave, my school didn't teach me any black or American history, so more often than not this is my source of education. However I know I will never experience what they have so I just do my best to understand. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Thank you both for your comments. THIS is a breath of fresh air. The crazy thing is, this story is just a generation or two away here in Louisiana. I'm 38 years old and the trauma in this movie is so "touchable" to me. I did not experience this EXACT trauma, but the trauma experience is the norm in the lives of people of color.

That "gesture" has many names among different cultures, but it's most commonly referred to as the Evil Eye. Celie put a curse on him. "Til you do right by me everything you even think about is gonna fail", and it worked!

It definitely did! I'm impressed.

When Shug is first talking to Celie, she tells her that "my Pa still love me, he just don't know it" and begins to cry. The movie never directly discusses Shug's past, but they allude to the fact that Shug and Albert had children together (Albert says to Old Mister, "All Shug Avery's kids got the same father. I can vouch for that") but because Old Mister wouldn't allow Albert to marry Shug (she tells Albert, "I don't need no weak little boy who can't say no to his daddy. I needs a man" and when Albert tells Old Mister he should have married Shug, his father says Albert would have wasted his life and Old Mister's money doing so), Shug was scandalized as the daughter of a preacher having babies out of wedlock. Her father disowned her because of it. All those years he never had anything to do with her and it hurt Shug terribly.

He dis-owned her for not singing in the church no more, she sang for the world, not God anymore. Shug ran from their differences, became a juke joint singer that developed a alcohol problem, which Ms. Celie stepped her down from back to health.

@@JordangeVision I suppose that the Academy was in favor of a film with Africans as set dressing "Out of Africa" rather than one that featured the lives of black characters in the forefront.
@JordangeVision
@JordangeVision 6 месяцев назад
@@sampa2nyc In 1985? Quite possible. Considering I can remember a lot of black Oscar "firsts" much later, it's easy to assume a lot of those attitudes were still awake at the time.

Thanks for reaction. Well done. Some points..the girl character singing lead in the choir and the piano player are Shugs children, who lived with the grandparents. Also it was funny when U said the singing was "fighting each other"🤣🤣. That is actually the back and forth style of gospel music called "call and response" .

There are bisexuals out there. I wouldnt say Shug is "living a lie", she openly admitted she had feelings for Albert, and she could just as easily have feelings for her husband as well, just because he has a lesbian experience with Ceile doesnt mean she doesnt also enjoy men

“Its running a lil long” 😅 This length is nothing compared to when your sitting in a black church and the choir has been going on the same song for 30 minutes and its only the beginning of service.😭
