I love Duke Jordan's playing with Blakey and Mobley on the tiny Transition label (sold to Blue Note). He's more lyrical and melodically free than the hard-boppin' Horace Silver, who has the advantage in creating ingenious yet accessible and memorable compositions for rhythm plus 2 instruments (e.g. "Ecarole"). I didn't realize til recently that Duke was married to vocalist Sheila Jordan, who was gigging in England while in her nineties. "Jordu" is the one to know, though recently I discovered his "No Problem."

Interesting perspective on Duke Jordan's playing - he's often overlooked. I got to know Sheila a bit in the 1980s. A wonderful singer and very nice person!

Thank you, JazzBrother. Also the Ex-hubby of progressive Jazz singer Sheila Jordan. Max & Brownie: the Jazz door openers for me at about age 21. A friend gave me two 90 min cassettes of the complete Quintet repertoire. I fell madly in love with all of it:especially Jordu. Thanx so much, Ron. All the best. 🌹🌹🌹

Jordu has been one of my favorite tunes always.. it could be the soundtrack to my day But I never knew the harmony precisely; it reminds me of My Old Flame.. "But I'll never be the same" C7-F7 "Til I discover what became" Bbmaj-Eb7 (!) "Of my old flame" D7-Eb7 2-5-G Such a smooth sound, seems almost to conjure a foxtrot rhythm, slow slow quick quick, or a samba box step P.s Clifford Brown is a treasure trove of melody. His solos embed themselves in the memory, as if they were written there.. and his solo becomes an integral part of the song. Great melodies to study and play
@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453
The melody definitely evokes those wistful tunes like My Old Flame.

@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 The bridge was one of my first melodies I ever played on guitar ages ago. It swings hard by it's nature, with an easy repeating pattern, yet is still mysterious to me. I'm checking out more from Jordan

Nice coordination of right-hand improv with walking bass. Very few pianists seem to have solved that challenge. Oscar, of course, though Dave McKenna is best known for mastering it.

A favourite standard of mine! Duke Jordan composed some other great tunes, another favourite is No Problem, which has a similar melancholy feeling. The interestingly the first two recordings of Jordu are entitled Minor Encamp.

Thanks! I didn't know that about the title Minor Encamp - I'll check them out.

@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 I actually got that slightly wrong, the first recorded version is called Minor Escamp, it's on a 10" LP from 1954 on the Swing label. The next recorded version is called Minor Encamp from a recording where Roy Haynes is leader called Roy Haynes Modern Group, this was released in 1955 on the Swing label as well.

Thanks for sharing this Ron. I get so much out of your Real Book videos. Each one is like a jazz history lesson, as well as a music lesson. I love that Clifford Brown and Max Roach album too! 😊 🎶
