Finally I find a pianist that doesn't scream "look how fast and blurry I can play!", but actually plays music with rich details and makes it sound more like what it would have sounded back then.

For me Bolet is one of the greatest pianists and real maestros of the last century. For me it is so sad that the critics weren't so fair to him in his earlier career. For me Emil Gilel is right when he says that Bolet ist probably the best pianist of the western world! Not only his technique is brilliant, he has such a brilliant and clear, detailed play - just wonderful. I loved to watch his BBC Masterclasses when I was a teenager. He was such a good teacher with such a good sense of intelligent humor and really good advices. And he treated them so fair and praised their play. Not only a great musician, a real great personality with a kind and fine character!!!

bolet is an amazing and very underrated pianist. he manages to stay sensitive in his playing without making it oversaturated or insincere. and definitely he seemed like a nice man to have been around in general, i admire him greatly.

The 4th Ballade is astounding. He follows it's discursive path just happy to be along for the ride. I've never heard the chordal exclamation before the coda delivered with such authority. This recording is a treasure.

Bolet is NOT a piano performer. He's a conduit for Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninoff to speak through. A lyrical giant, with unusual power and grace.

This was filmed during Bolet's tour of Australia & Far East in February/March, 1987 (Hong Kong and Singapore). His first tour of Australia was in 1965; this was his - I reckon - fifth (1977, 1981, 1985, 1987). This was advertised as Bolet "at the height of his international acclaim as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century". Reuben Fineberg (1937-1996), pianist, conductor, art dealer, produced Bolet’s 1987 tour of Australia, some of which was videotaped (here) at Rippon Lea House, outside Melbourne. (Built in 1869 by Frederick Sargood and named after his mother's maiden name, Rippon. Lea is an English word for a meadow.) Bolet has said in discussion that he incorporates a few little extra notes of Josef Hofmann in Liszt's "Venezia e Napoli".

You once again offer another wonderful anecdote of Jorge Bolet. Your knowledge of the maestro seemingly rivals the great Bryce Morrison. I heard he was going to write a bio on Jorge but it never seemed to happen. Thanks for your contributions saltcots. I enjoy every one of them.

Oddly enough 1983 is the year I started admiring Jorge's playing through a television master class on Rach 3 in Scottland. I was mesmerized by it and learned a great deal about piano performance as a result. Listening to Jorge has enriched my playing immensly. Thanks again.@@saltcots8985

One of the greatest pianist of 20th century. A great musician which I truly recommend the young people to listen to his recordings, to discover how great he was. I just got a hand full or less, of pianist that can be compared to the elegancy, technic, musicality, control of the instrument, musical phrase and music knowledge of Mr. Bolet. And none of them are today's pianist of course.

I am trying to like it, but his tone is constantly very mellow and cushioned and he slows down too much it weakens the continuity of the musical phrase. He plays with excessive lyricism, uses rubato with no restraint at all, and plays too slow. It all sounds hushed soupy lukewarm diluted. I really wanted to like it, but in the end i dislike his style.
