This is a video in my Speculative Fiction Studies series, which examines and analyses key aspects of classic and contemporary works in the genres that fall under the broad rubric of speculative fiction. This includes fantasy, science fiction, horror, alternate history, weird, cyberpunk, utopian, post-apocalyptic, and superhero fiction, among other genres
This video focuses on Jorge Luis Borges' short philosophical story, The Garden of Forking Paths, and discusses the narrative at the center of the larger story, the production of a labyrinth as a novel by Ts'ui Pen, and its translation, editing, and explanation by the sinologist Dr. Stephen Albert.
The Garden of Forking Paths is that novel, which appears to be contradictory, confused, a chaos, but which represents an image of the universe as Ts'ui Pen understands it, particularly in terms of the dimension of time, which is neither linear, nor cyclical, but a much more complex network of diverging, converging, and parallel timelines

Illuminating video! As a short story writer who is greatly inspired by Borges' work I really appreciate your explorations of his prismatic tales.

For all of Borges's inventiveness, I sometimes wonder why he didn't play around with the form of this story, by writing something like Julio Cortazar's Hopscotch, or even a Choose Your Own Adventure Book! But still, so many ideas packed into one short story. Even with so many science fiction stories about alternate realities, I don't think any match the subtlety of this. Interesting also to note that in Steven Wolfram's Grand Unified Theory of physics, the idea of the splitting timelines coming together again at times, is important, just as Borges hints at in the story.

I think Borges wrote the sort of stories he wanted to, not what people years later think he should have done
