After Dan Erlewine put new tuners on Jorma Kaukonen's Martin M-30, Jorma returned the favor by giving an impromptu lesson in fingerpicking! He also shows how he strings up his Martin.

Most StewMac viewers know Dan mostly as a guitar tech, but old Ann Arbor folks like me remember him as a very skilled blues player and damn good country/swing picker. Not as much a finger-picker as a flat-pick whiz, but smooth, i wanna tell ya. Modest guy, but turn him loose and watch out! He soloed on a demo I made for Electra Records, and I wouldn't have preferred Chet!

Have't had such an opportunity lately, but in 1988 or so when Jorma lived around Woodstock I saw him twice in a very intimate setting at the old Pursuit Of Happiness Cafe in Liberty, NY. On one of those occasions he played an old Fender LTD archtop! He did not disappoint.

lol Been going to see Jorma & Jack since the early 70s, seen him play dozens & dozens of times, they never fails to put on a good show... except perhaps, the show he did in the Comack arena in Long Island NY in the late 70s, musta been in the 1976-77 area of time.... Lotta bad acid circulating the arena at that concert & there were some folks flipping our & having a fight in the parking lot throwing bottles, blood everywhere, ughh.... Aside from that particular show, I've never been disappointed by Jorma & Jack.... 😁 Got a chance to meet Jorma at one of his shows back in 1982, it was the night before I got married to my first wife... the marriage was a wash but meeting Jorma that particular night was cool....

Many years ago I worked at Brooks Cameras in Stonestown (near SF State University in San Francisco). Jorma was a customer there (he is quite a good photographer) who would often hang out and chat with us for quite a long time. He was one of the first "celebrities" I ever met, and, without question, one of the nicest people. It is great seeing him hang out with Dan!

I had the pleasure of going out the Fur Peace Ranch for a workshop and I have to say it was one of the best experiences in my guitar education journey. Food was awesome and the vibe was so cool - no one judges your playing and you feel free to learn without feeling any pressure. I recommend anyone interested should do it - get out there - you will not forget it. And he's such a cool dude as this video shows. Love it!

Tom Tobin, That's not terribly far from the opportunity of a lifetime to be guided & taught by one of rock & rolls greatest guitarists.... I'm in Florida now but my have a house in Laurel Canyon in L.A. It's modest compared to many others there but some of the history of the surrounding homes in the canyon were once homes to some of some pretty choice & notable rockers... I'd really love to buy Peter Torks notorious party house in the canyon but we can't possibly afford that right now..... perhaps someday? Hehehe

Great vid!! JA fan since forever but loved the '03 (?) PBS special for Year Of The Blues, some of which found its way to college radio (KCSM). One segment offered Jorma and Jack as Hot Tuna doing 'something in the peoples key of G' which was a slammin' take of "Walkin' Blues".

Kevin Monzel - But surely six are classier.☺☺☺ Being serious but to me it looks as if they couldn't find a perfect match for a broken one so fitted one of a different colour.(I've got a guitar with an odd tuner on it - for a similar reason - but it's the right colour and nobody notices - I didn't notice either until a few months after I'd bought it).
@RickDeevey

And I've been criticized for having different coloured bridge pins in my campfire Washburn. Scavenged from different sets. Those plastic ones just don't survive many string changes, especially on the thicker gauges.
@DelTangBrav
@DelTangBrav 5 лет назад
Rick - don't tell Kevin he might think that's very classy and want your mismatched bridge pins. ☺☺☺ I recall about 56 years ago when I broke my first bridge pin - they weren't readily available and I replaced it with part of one of those thin pencils that used to be in diaries. NOW THAT'S CLASS ! ☺☺☺
