at 0:27 notice Joscho's right hand little finger immediately damping the first string the moment he hits the down stroke on the third string. He then removes it the instant he plays the first down stroke on the first string. This damping is barely there, if at all, on the second ( faster ) play-though and there is no damping at all on the fastest ( Yngwie style) play through.

A jack of all trades or a master of one. I like that his answer was honest in that, even tho he knows of these other players, he didn't study or copy them, his discipline is gypsy. It's just that the technique carries over. Bluegrass players are very similar in their singular focus. They simply don't have time to learn everyone else, they're perfecting their discipline.

I've been struggling with sweep technique. Spent sleepless nights thinking how to practise, thinking how should my fingers be, thinking how should i hold the pick, thinking in what anlge my wrist should be in... or should i make an angle with my wrist and so o and so on and so on. I find these videos of yours extremely and ultimately important and helpfull. I mean EXTREMELY and ULTIMATELY important and helpfull. I found these videos yesterday. Now i perfectly well know that if Joscho can play as a lightning with holding his fingers, pick and wrist the way he keeps, then i can get there that way. And now i know how to do it and i can go forward with practising... and i can sleep :) So HUUUUUGE THANKS to you Troy!! THANKS MAN!!!!!

I unintentionally learned sweep picking from playing bluegrass. It was just the only way to play nearly fast enough and came naturally. Ironically I still cannot do it when playing electric because electric guitars just push me to play long sustaining notes and enjoy all the saturation and harmonics.

I like arpeggios very much so these descending arpeggios were beautiful for me. Yes, it's really important sentence that "music and technique are connected" cause 1) what if we have nice solo in our brain but we can't play it? 2) our guitarist' "toolbox" allow us to think to add more flavor to our songs, cause we know some interesting techniques.

What I find interesting is that most of the time techniques are made up by pure instinct, players try to compensate for speed and clarity and their brain almost automatically develop a picking pattern, I noticed that even with myself, I learned by my own ...when I was in highschool, some dudes would tell me to teach them what I was doing, but I wasn't sure at all what I was doing.

He's just using the traditional technique for playing gypsy jazz guitar, REST-STROKE picking technique inherited from the master Django Reinhartd which many performers GJ cling almost religiously, regardless of considerations of sound, dynamics, etc., is simply tradition.

Legner I know, but as I'm saying, that's one of my picking techniques, I'm aware now, but nobody taught me how to do it, my brain automatically did it all for me to compensate speed and clarity. Well, I stopped playing 3 years ago anyway.
@Megalegner

Angelo Julioth I understand, recently I've been a little interested in gypsy jazz, but I still have not decided to adopt and study the rest-stroke picking, I fear it may affect my usual technique of picking.

I don't think your usual picking technique will vanish if you learn a new one, as long as it becomes second nature, you won't have any problems. Gypsy jazz sounds cool, I haven't heard about it.

This proves that the technique could have been used before Yngwie and guitarists did not know what to make of it except that it worked and sounded beautiful. But Yngwie popularized it because he was being watched by masses on VHS, guitar magazine and concerts.
@inyokutse
@inyokutse 2 года назад
it's definitely been used for decades before yngwie ever used it. Most guitarists aren't familiar with jazz guitar from the 30s/40s/50s so they have no idea how old these techniques are. Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Les Paul, Oscar Moore, Johnny Smith, Hank Garland, Charlie Christian, Lenny Breau, Jimmy Rainey, Herb Ellis, Jim Hall etc all were doing that way back in the day

Hey Troy, a little off topic in terms of artist however... Does Al Di Meola use the Alternate/ Sweep picking technique you talk about in your 'Mixing Alternate and Sweep picking'? Some of the licks especially in the Friday Night in San Fransisco album are incredibly fast. Ive been attempting the early run from Race with Devil on Spanish Highway and I'm finding my playing incredibly sloppy when Alternate picking each note at a higher speed, would i benefit from a mixture of Sweep and Alternate picking or is there a way you have discovered during your research that you find can help when playing Di Meola's licks. Love the content btw, hugely interesting.
@gabrielguerreiro5051
@gabrielguerreiro5051 6 лет назад
Is that a song with that lick?
@MrTubularBalls
@MrTubularBalls 8 лет назад
Interesting. In his second approach to playing arps, he doesn't sweep up but does two consecutive up-picks (e- and b-string). It's clear as day in the slomo footage. I wonder why, is that for dynamics? With sweeping it tends to sound smooth and there's a little bleed between the notes, this way the notes jump out more I guess. Also his downstroke on the high E was a surprise. He really digs in instead of using just the tip, and there's so much force behind it he hits the top of the guitar. It looks a bit like Van Halen's tremolo technique.
@troygrady
@troygrady 8 лет назад
Double upstrokes is the Yngwie way, and it's because of downward pickslanting. Upstrokes pull away from the guitar on an angle, and do not rest against the next lower string, hence no upward sweeping in the playing of most downward pickslanters like Yngwie, Zakk, the Gypsies, et al.
@MrTubularBalls
@MrTubularBalls 8 лет назад
***** Aha, another piece of the puzzle falls in place. Thanks! I' d expect it'd be easier to just switch between downward and upward pickslanting though.
@TheChodex
@TheChodex 8 лет назад
It's the gypsy tehnique for louder tone. If you do Yngwie style on acoustic unpluged guitar it sounds really quiet, but if you play gypsy style you are much more lauder so people can hear you. Thats the whole point of gypsy technique, the volume. It's kinda like pick version of apoyando in flamenco/fingerstyle.
@MrTubularBalls
@MrTubularBalls 8 лет назад
Danilo Novaković Right, that's what I thought, dynamics. Indeed, in flamenco certain notes or chords are also emphasised, and the playing can be rough (buzzing), that's part of the sound. I've also seen McLaughlin play like this live on acoustic, very physical, which was a surprise to me. He really threw his back into it, as if he was using every muscle in his upper body. Not sure if that's a gypsy influence. Huge contrast with DiMeola, who was also on stage. He plays with much less dynamics, and lets the amp do the work volumewise.
@Megalegner
@Megalegner 8 лет назад

Hi everyone. I read the comments here and I think there is a little confusion about why django did it this way. A little anectode: Some while ago I worked on the technique until I could play like this with strict Rest-Stroke Gypsy technique: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-izigjJhMwfs.html. I also started improvising on the chords of Jazz standards connecting arpeggios like Django did. I went back to alternate picking, sweeping and the known conventional shred stuff and forgot about the gypsy stuff. At the annual freak guitar camp (mattias eklund from sweden)2015 we played "All of me" with a swing feel. When soloing on the changes with strict alternate picking (I had worked a lot on this, till matching the Paul Gilbert lick)....well it just did not feel right. everything seemed to fall apart, particularly the rythm. Switching back to Rest stroke, felt perfect for the swing feel immidiately, although I did not use it much anymore. It seems to enforces it some, like having a "swingy metronome " build in, in the right hand. You simply have better timing, A much better tone for acoustics and the swing feel, with a clear pivoting point being the downstroke while switching strings. Joe Pass used this method before switching to fingerstyle, George Benson does use it. This is no coincidence i believe. Joscho also explains why he uses this technique in detail in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yfiHsJR64JA.html

@mifune9634
@mifune9634 8 лет назад
"You can do it too with enough practice." I don't think it's quite that simple. A fairly high percentage of people just simply don't have the fine motor control to play *anything* at that tempo cleanly, let alone a lick mixing up strokes, down strokes, and sweeps. On the positive side, the fingering looks relatively easy.
@BradEnquist
@BradEnquist 8 лет назад
The reason I believe that you can get it is because I learned to do that lick and I was not exactly a prodegy. Practice the picking hand alone first then once you get that rolling, try adding the right hand in there. Don't get in a big rush, just work the speed up.
@mifune9634
@mifune9634 8 лет назад
If you can play this lick articulately, with consistent timing, and at that tempo, I think you're not giving yourself enough credit. I believe a fair percentage of players will never achieve that level of technique, no matter how much they practice. It's truly amazing what muscle memory allows you to achieve, but we each have our personal physical limits that we can't overcome simply by practicing more. Much in the way that an elite sprinter can't outperform Usain Bolt by out training him. You may disagree, but that's okay. Perhaps you don't quite realize how awesome you really are. Rock on. :)

Cool video! But actually, the "Metal shredder" way of doing these sweeps is not like that - Joscho is always crossing in between the B and G string with outside picking (up-down) while most guys (myself included) just continue the sweeping motion with a double upstroke, returning to a downstroke only on the B string afterwards. I feel this helps a lot with overall speed and fluidity, and feels more natural to most guys. But to each his own preference ofc :)
@OtakuyaroDono
@OtakuyaroDono 8 лет назад
I'm not sure why but I always had trouble repeating three string sweeps with double upstroke and double downstrokes quickly. Somehow with four or more strings I can manage lol. with three strings I have to do the yngwie way or do some swybrid like marshall harrison with down, up, up, up, middle, ring. aside: i think swybrid on three strings is cool because you can end with a big down stroke on a bend on the top E string
@SpawnofHastur
@SpawnofHastur 8 лет назад
The gypsy guys prefer to play any note that is accented to be played with a downstroke to give the note more force. The note on the G string is somewhat accented considered to the other notes in the lick, and so he does a downstroke to make it "pop".
@LearnSwingGuitar
@LearnSwingGuitar 8 лет назад
I think it depends on the player. I used to be a true two way sweeper/economy picker, and I agree that GJ technique is completely different- but it's interesting that Yngwie uses the same approach given I always thought he was Mr Sweep growing up. Marty Friedman (a player I listened to a lot when growing up :-)) uses a similar technique. The main reason I moved to the GJ is tone and projection on acoustic instruments, so it's interesting & unexpected that some rock players use it.

Joscho is an amazing guitar player ! Difference between Django and Malmsteen: Django is pure feeling filled with melodies , Malmsteen is repetitive and boring...

at 0:27 notice Joscho's right hand little finger immediately damping the first string the moment he hits the down stroke on the third string. He then removes it the instant he plays the first down stroke on the first string. This damping is barely there, if at all, on the second ( faster ) play-though and there is no damping at all on the fastest ( Yngwie style) play through.
