The Philippine national hero Jose Rizal was among the famous prisoners lodged at the Montjuic Castle, the military fortress atop the Montjuic mountain in Barcelona.
Rizal was incarcerated there in October 1896, after which he was deported to Manila to face charges he had instigated rebellion against Spain.
A few weeks later, on December 30, 1896, he was executed by firing squad in what is now Manila's Luneta Park.
The Filipino Web Channel visited Rizal's cell in Montjuic Castle on Monday, June 2, 2014 but a photographic exhibit was going on in four of the cells, called sala, including Rizal's own, that would last till end of June, and prevented us from taking a detailed video.
Rizal's name is prominently displayed at the entrance door. At the ante-chamber his old photographs appear with a citation by Barcelona authorities.
The Sala Jose Rizal was inaugurated in April 2011.

" . . . Aboard the steamer, Isla de Panay, Rizal left Manila for Spain on September 2, 1896 . . . By the eve of September 7, the steamer reached Singapore and on the 30th, while Isla de Panay was on its voyage along the Mediterranean Sea, a telegraphic message was received by Captain A. Alemany, the ship skipper, ordering him to arrest and confine Jose Rizal in his cabin until they arrive in Barcelona on the 3rd of October. Early morning of October 6, Rizal was transferred to Montjuich (sic) Castle where he was visited by Eulogio Despujol who was then the military Commander of Cataluña.
