Joseph Beuys' Felt Suit, 1970, is a two-piece suit comprising a jacket and a pair of trousers made from coarse grey felt. Beuys made 100 suits and although they had the appearance of regular clothing - were in fact extremely delicate and fragile sculptural pieces.
The Tate acquired one edition of the work in 1981, placed it in storage and when it was requested for display in 1989 conservators discovered the material had disintegrated due to a moth-infestation.
Unable to save or restore the suit at the time conservators placed it in permanent storage, however two more editions of the suit were eventually acquired by the gallery and remain part of the Tate collection.
The Gallery of Lost Art was an online exhibition that told the stories of vanished artworks. Whether destroyed, stolen, discarded or erased some of the most significant artworks of the last 100 years have been lost and can no longer be seen.

I would have expected the Tate to know better when storing fabrics.

here we can see the fetish in art history/markets. if beuys was alive, he'd abandon the project or just make another one

+7kurisu Yes, IF he was alive, he might do that. Since he isn't, however, the ones he made are all there are.

+7kurisu Then you don't know Beuys at all, he had a Tantrum when a cleaning lady accidentally threw one of his pieces out because she thought it to be actual garbage...

Lmao of course it was tried to be restored but yet its so obvious it was made to be destroyed over time. If he wanted a suit that would last he would have made one

It's not about the suit per se. It's about the integrity of the archival process and the collection itself. I spend much of my time in archives.

A predictable reaction by the Tate. They should just make another suit if they must have one. Or just put the remains into a bottle, dead moths and all and keep it as a reminder to get a contract for ongoing replacements next time. If it matters.. A felt suit or the idea of a felt suit? Such twats.
