The vibrato is gorgeous. A rare and beautiful voice being brought along sensibly, unforced. I wish him all the very best,,,he deserves it.

Wonderful tenor, no forcing of the voice, no unpleasant wobble just a perfect vibrato and that rare, rare quality, real melody in the voice - wish him all the success in the world!

I never get tired of listening to this album. His voice is so unique, so pure. So glad that he didn't just remain in the chorus! What a terrible loss that would have been to those of us who are fans!

Bravisimo ! I have been longing for a voice this beautiful: warm timbre that captures the heart plus focused technique (unlike, unfortunately these days, so many singers whose sound too often is strident and whose technique is too loose, even to the point of warbling and sliding from note to note, e.g., sopranos.) Thank you for sharing Calleja with us.

Calleya has a voice for Donizetti, also for Bellini and early Verdi, and that is really a rarity.

Riccardo Chailly sums up this fine tenor perfectly - a rare nowadays "italianate" sound so perfectly suited to the lyric roles of Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini etc. Not an Otello or Manrico but a perfedt Duke of Mantua, Alfredo or Pinkerton - wonderful voice.

I've been studying technique for about ten years and I would not refer to his as a "bad" technique. Could you be more specific?

@TsarBovov If that is true of Calleja, then every singer in the world past & present should also have stayed in the choir. We all have our personal favourites, but as a vocalist he owes no one any apologies.

What is the title of the song that plays at 5:15?

Notes should not grow into vibrato. If the tone begins straight and then starts to move then that is what is called a wobble and that is what the majority of post war tenors have. Calleja's voice is more like the Tenors of the early 20th century who had true vibrato which is created by a perfect blend of registers rather than air pressure. Not to everyones's taste but technically better than the majority of modern singing. Would love to know who he studied with.

when I was younger I thought he was fabulous... too bad he has a flutter. So much potential here.

when every single note is machine gun fire with no pure notes growing into vibrato, it sounds pointless without feeling...
@TsarBovov

@hiyadroogs He sings like an amateur. Most other singers don't. That's why he should have stayed in the choir.

His vibrato sounds like machine gun fire in places - not the most ideal sound
