We have giant schnauzers in the family for the las 25 years, they are great guard dogs, and certainly ours is my best friend, when I go anywhere if my giant is with me I dont have to worry about anything, he is a gentle loving dog but fierce when he needs to be, usually if I am ok with a stranger he is ok, but if I don´t feel right or sense something wrong he is there with me .... when I have to be gone for a while and leave my wife at home alone I know that with our Schnauzer she is well taken care of.
Sounds like the perfect balance! May I ask you if it was a consideration to go for a show or a working line? Which one you have, and what made you chose one over the other? I am in the stage of forming an opinion... Have a 20+ year experience, just with other breeds.
I actually kinda liked seeing how the dog didn't always stay exactly where he told him yet he listened well during the temperament display. It shows the dog has some thought for himself.
Giant schnauzers, Bouvier de Flanders, and Belgian Malinois are my favorites of mine, high drive and highly trainable. Giant schnauzers are so versatile, they're also incredible search and rescue dogs. In the late 90's I got to decoy for a Bouvier named Johnny, he hit like a freight train. All I saw was this huge mass of hair and snapping teeth closing in on me, after the bite work, he was such a sweet dog who loved to work. I have a young female Malinois and a male German Shorthaired Pointer, two high drive breeds, after training (3-4+ times daily) they switch into their indoor mode and chill on place while I get work done.
Google says 550psi in bite force but also says there are no tests to prove it. Are there differences such as size ,temperance & structure in American bread & German bread G.S. like there are with Rottweilers & Shepards?
Just watched and very impressed. Another lifetime ago I had a GSD (police service). Giants have always been my second favorite. Joe mentioned that they retire dogs to adoptive families. Anyone know how to get more information about that?
No. There are quite a few advantages. First off they live longer than a Mal or GSD (longer working career), way less hip issues, double the bite force, don't shed, hypo allergenic, to name a few.
