Joseph Gets Scared of a Thunderstorm 

For once, I can actually relate to Joseph. Whenever there's a thunderstorm, my dog starts freaking out. Poor him...

I actually feel bad for Joseph in this scenario because I live in Oklahoma and we get some pretty nasty storms that sometimes produce tornadoes. My grandma never got on me for being scared of storms even when I was 10 and older.

Man. This family is enforcing the "one size fits all" approach very dangerously.

I used to be afraid of thunderstorms but now I love them

I don’t blame Joseph here, I used to be scared of thunderstorms at night too. Even at the old ago of 23, I still get jitters from time to time. But I don’t scream and cry about it. What Joseph could do to counter his fear of the storm is to have a box fan in his room running and it’ll drown out the thunder by half.

People can be scared of storms and there is nothing we can do about it.

Fear responses aren't things people have easy conscious control over. You're not going to make anyone stop being scared by telling them to stop and threatening them with punishment. The parents sure dropped the ball on this one.

I thought it was ridiculous that Joesph parents told him no to sleeping with a teddy bear. He can still do that as he is 11 and he is still a kid at that age. In fact when I was around his age I slept with stuffed animals in my bed because I was still a kid at 11 years of age.

Well… I have to admit it, I was terrified for storm sounds as a kid, and I persisted when I was 15 after discovering strange stuff that I have never seen before as well as haunted sounding electronica that make me think that I was tortured alive in my sleep.

I also can relate to Joseph. I live in north Texas and I'm 20 and I hate when they happen at night. The ones that are extremely loud give me a heart attack. At least I don't go cry like a baby, but still, that was awful and cruel of Joseph's parents in this case. Thank goodness I have earplugs now.

Afaik, a night-light is suitable for all ages.

So yeah, Joseph's parents are like Lotso from Toy Story 3. After seeing this video, I'm pretty sure if Joseph gets in death danger, they will surely leave him to die, even seeing him through their eyes, they will not show remorse. And they will just say to him, "stop crying like a three-year-old, you are very old to act like that", while knowing he's about to die.

I had to admit it, Matt. It's wasn't Joseph's fault when he had fear of thunderstorm. There plenty of peoples who scared of thunderstorms in real life.

I am never be scared of thunderstorm. As the matter of fact, there is no way to stop the thunderstorm immediately due to the weather.

For once, I think his parents were too harsh on him. Least they could've done is try and reassure him or give him a hug. They never do that. They expect him to just grow up by grounding him for months but that clearly doesn't help. They need a better approach

During the rain season, I also scared for the thunderstorm because it is very loud. But make sure Joseph will be not throw a temper tantrum during that weather because he is a tween boy right now.

I remember That when I was 8, I had a lizard named Lizzy from My Uncle. Then during my Completion Ceremony Way Back 2018, I gave my parents a Teddy bear to say thank you for what they have done to me. And right now, we still have it in my sister's bedroom. And in 2019, I have the glow in the dark stick that is also a nightlight that I used during events. And It can be used for parties (especially birthdays). I'm 22 now, and I still love stuffed toys and/or nightlight. So No one should be too old for stuffed toys or Nightlight, and they should not make fun because they have either 2 objects. It's for everyone.

The Chinese Character for Thunderstorm is. In China they called 雷雨. While. In Taiwan they called 雷暴. Plus in Singapore is called 打雷. But in Hong Kong they call it 行雷 instead. It is Because in Hong Kong the official language is Cantonese.

There's nothing wrong with being scared of storms I'm 20 and if there's a tornado warning near where I live I'm hiding and crying in the bathroom 🙂

She totally mishandled this... When a child has a phobia of thunderstorms, you must try to reassure the child. 1) She denied him both a teddy and a night light, as he was panicking, and trivialized his feelings of terror. This clearly communicates that whenever he feels he is in genuine danger, you will not help him, and he is on his own. Congratulations, Mom. 2) She grounded him, for having a panic attack. She literally grounded her son for something that was beyond his power to control. Essentially, he was grounded for nothing, and then made to feel even more helpless, and added nothing but shame. At the very least, she could have given him an option to make him feel safer. Maybe if she offered him to sleep in the closet; Also compromise, would you rather your growing boy scream all night when there's a thunderstorm, or would you rather let him have a teddy, but only when he is genuinely terrified, to get through that episode?

If he can't control it, teach him how. Degrading him ain't going to work.
