Is there a gateway to enlightenment?
From one perspective it can be said that the entire spiritual path rests on the development and cultivation of a particular mind state known simply as equanimity.
When highly developed, equanimity brings about an unshakable quality of mind that allows us to ride the inevitable changes of the human experience with balance and ease. We must be careful to not confuse the neutrality of equanimity with a sense of disconnection or indifference toward ourselves and others. As Joseph explains, this universal mental factor is present in every wholesome state of mind, making it difficult to overestimate its value in cultivating spacious impartiality.

What a valuable, precious gift it is to come back to these talks, it's worth so much! I like to underscore a few key points in the talk and make them into mantras. There's so many gems here, among them I will be repeating "spacious impartiality ... how are you with gain & loss? .... no one goes through life without meeting both sides of the 8 vicissitudes .... equanimity is a PRACTICE .... abide for short periods in equanimity .... connected to my own inner integrity .... the great way is not difficult for those without preferences ....it's just the nature of things .... stand like a great tree amidst the vicissitudes .... whatever has the nature to arise will also pass away, so the mind doesn't cling, when the mind doesn't cling, it's not agitated, without agitation, one experiences nibbana .... empty phenomena rolling on ....empty of self .... of all the 10 perfections, patience and equanimity are the mainstay .... 'there is no higher happiness than peace' the Buddha." It's all right there! nothing more is needed. Boundless gratitude!! __/\__
