A dhamma talk on how to work with thoughts and emotions in our meditation practice.
“The truth of suffering is to be realized. The truth of the cause of the suffering is to be understood. The true of the end of the suffering is to be experienced. And the way to the end is to be walked by each one. The Buddha´s enlightenment solved his problem, it did not solve ours, except to point out the way. There is no magic formula which will release us from suffering. Each of us has to purify our own mind, for it is the attachment in our minds that keeps us bound. “
- The Experience of Insight - Joseph Goldstein
___________________________________________________
Go beyond good and bad by refraining from mentally labeling anything as good or bad. When you go beyond the habitual naming, the power of the universe moves through you. When you are in a nonreactive relationship to experiences, what you would have called "bad" before often turns around quickly, if not immediately, through the power of life itself.
Watch what happens when you don't name an experience as "bad" and instead bring an inner acceptance, an inner "yes" to it, and so let it be as it is.
Whenever you are able, have a "look" inside yourself to see whether you are unconsciously creating conflict between the inner and the outer, between your external circumstances at that moment -- where you are, who you are with, or what you are doing -- and your thoughts and feelings. Can you feel how painful it is to internally stand in opposition to what is?
When you recognize this, you also realize that you are now free to give up this futile conflict, this inner state of war.
~Eckhart Tolle

“All that we have invented, the symbols in the church, the rituals, they are all put there by thought. Thought has invented these things. Invented the savior. Invented the temples of India and the contents of the temples. Thought has invented all these things called sacred. You cannot deny that. So thought in itself is not sacred. And when thought invents God, God is not sacred. So what is sacred? That can only be understood or happen when there is complete freedom, from fear, from sorrow, and when there is this sense of love and compassion with it's own intelligence. Then when the mind is utterly still, that which is sacred can take place.”
~Jiddu Krishnamurti
The gift of the Dhamma excels all gifts;
The taste of the Dhamma excels all tastes;
Delight in the Dhamma excels all delights.
The eradication of Craving overcomes all sorrow.

I love the insight of how thoughts slide info the mind, without the initial impact that sounds and the other senses have. It can take a while to notice we've been swept away.

one thing I find helps me is that instead of saying "I am sad" to say "I have a sad" and later resolved this to "there is a sad" or "there is an anger".

In my mind, Joseph Goldstein is one of the clearest teachers of mindful living out there. I suspect that he is this clear because he is committed to living according to the precepts that he teaches about. We're hearing the words of a man who has walked the path that he describes to us.

Joseph Goldstein is a Bodhisattiva. This talk can be life changing to those who apply it in their lives. This is the most important talk that I have ever heard. It comes from Goldstein’s book “Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening”.

It is so amazingly strange, how every time one reaches a certain phase of development, precisely the right Dhamma appears just fitting with what's happening with you. Tis talk explains precisely what my conscousness is observing throughout the day as the train of thoughts and interlaced emotions progresses. Mr. Goldstein has also obviously reached sati and sampacanya, for one needs this to be able to percieve these immaterial dhammas which Mr. Goldstein explains. Excellent! pure Magga teaching.. this is the path of applied practice.. to observe the processes within the Khandas and see their relationship to Tilakkhana (3 marks of existence). Satu!

I have only recently discovered Joseph Goldstein and his talks are absolutely fantrastic. I cannot stress how useful and stunningly well explained these talks and particularly this one is. As for Matt Peterrsen, from his comment it is obvious that he is missing a brain cell or two. (I realise this is an unskilful emotion that has made me write this comment,I am aware of how flawed I am!) Unfortunately my sense of disgust is pretty strong right now!

Joseph is surely an amazing spiritual guider! I wonder what his take would be on someone who has OCD…someone who struggles w constant unwanted thoughts/feelings.

as someone with OCD and intrusive thoughts, sensations, images and urges I've found mindfulness to be a superpower. I'm now able to view them as empty transitory phenomena and appearances in consciousness that I don't cling to and use as objects of meditation and investigation. Joseph Goldstein is a hero to me.

@@ZeedSutn Yea I agree. I’ve been in a non-dualistic path for years and years , I guess I’m still getting caught up in life activity and therefore attachment. I’m a performer so it can get overwhelming sometimes. ❤️🙏
