Haydn’s lifetime saw a series of striking changes in musical style. At the time of his birth and childhood baroque traditions still prevailed. By the end of his life the apparent stability of the classical style was being challenged, notably by Beethoven. Haydn did not simply live through this long development; he was a central part of it. Nele Münchmeyer’s documentary throws light upon Haydn as the ingenious composer and as the private person - the “Libertine” in his private life and the “Servant” as the Kapellmeister of Esterházys’. The film includes excerpts from highly acclaimed performances of Haydn works. Amongst them are: the opera, Armida with the German Soprano Annette Dasch, Arias from Haydn performed by the Freiburger Barockorchester and the Baritone Thomas Quasthoff, performances of “Die Schöpfung” and “Die Jahreszeiten” conducted by Roger Norrington.

One of the best composers of the 2nd half of 18th century.

Probably the least informative documentary on a detail-rich topic.

I understand what you’re saying but there was more music than other documentaries. Isn’t that the point…the REASON) As for the young women playing the sonata on a steinway (Beautifully but… ) on that very stage… Someone didn’t get the memo. Totally contradictory to the idea of the documentary. Perhaps a performer more in tune with the origins of this music should’ve been selected for the segment.

Well… It’s me again. Perhaps you have more of a point than I realized. I don’t understand how this film was conceived put together or maybe perhaps more importantly financed. Am I intruding here because I don’t speak German? Or is it German intruding her because they don’t speak English? It’s quite confusing. The speechless man wandering around looking at old pages and birds in the air. Nevertheless the music is there.

And then more Steinway at Oxford. The whole thing seems slapped together.

@@solowbass This documentary should have been named ‘Miscellaneous Haydn Impressions for Afternoon Wanderlust.’
