Having seen Tron, Oblivion, Maverick and Spiderhead all in the last month I can say he is one of my favorite directors working today, specially in the blockbuster space, even if the scripts he chooses let him down I just love the care he puts into every shot, it feels like every scene has the most immaculate lighting it could have and he really uses every pixel available of the screen, even in a smaller thriller like Spiderhead he manages to sneak in grandiose shots that have the same elegance and craft as something like Top Gun, I will watch anything he makes at this point. Really nice breakdown of his style
Now with TOP GUN: MAVERICK added to his resume', I would like to see an update to this video. Fantastic analysis of an auteur who is not widely labeled as an auteur. Kosinski's upcoming Formula One film should be interesting.
So glad I'm not the only one who has a love for this director. Super underrated and you put into words exactly how I've been feeling. Best video so far btw! Bravo.
I want him to make an Akira live action remake that knocks it out of the park. The story, the sci fi world building, the balance of action and drama, it's right up his alley. You can already tell the light cycle battle in Tron Legacy is very inspired by Akira. Everyone would have their doubts as to whether it would come close to the original or if it would be another cash grab. Then he'd blow us all away with that mix of nostalgia and originality. Plus I think an R rated version of his style of quick, simple, yet effective violence would suit Akira so well. As well as the David/Goliath style imagery towards the end of the film.
Leave Akira alone these directors aren’t capable of making anime to live action Tron came first with the light cycles Akira came out 88 don’t give these guys any more ideas as they will make akira very boring And white washed Ghost in the shell Speed racer
I think my dream is for Joe Kosinski to direct a Star Trek movie. Those clean lines, symmetry, attention to detail, love of beauty shots, and sense of scale all feel perfect for the aethstetic of that universe.
RU-vid Recommendations brought me here and I'm glad I get to see the beginning of this channel and get to see it grow from here on. Great video, great delivery, great editing, loved it !
Looking at the quality of this video essay I'm pretty sure there's a few zeroes missing in your view and subscriber numbers... We want more! I need more!
It's so satisfying that this video is made before Top Gun Maverick. TGM is literally the best film of 2022. Only one of 2 films (other one was animated) that has a 95+ % for critics and Audiences. 96% & 99% respectively. Top Gun Maverick is a summer blockbuster masterpiece. Strong vision. Confident direction, concise Screenplay, astonishing cinematography, immersive sound, seamless editing, empowering VFX, impactful songs, and led a great acting Ensemble. Kosinski and Cruise literally made a miraculous magical experience. He is my favorite director along Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher. He's that good.
I feel like he'd make a very austere Star Trek flick, and as much as I was dissatisfied with Into Darkness, I really dig the more whiz-bang direction Abrams steered the franchise into. That being said, if he did a Star Trek miniseries for CBS All Access, I'd be there in a heartbeat.
great breakdown! i hadn't noticed the colour palette switch, nice. i will say i enjoyed the uncanny valley look of digital bridges, in the form of this slightly-off Clu clone, i think it fits the personality.
I am so hyped for Top Gun Maverick. I feel like with this new director it will be more serious and less cocky than the original. That is just what I expected to see in the new movie.
Finally watched Only the Brave last night and it was fantastic. Don't know if I care to watch Spiderhead though, I've not heard good things about that one... Joseph Kosinski is a wonder and I wish his movies would have gotten better 4K treatments (Tron Legacy is owned by disney, good luck, Oblivion has a 4K release but it's a flawed upscale since Universal wouldn't give him the money for a proper 4K DI, and Only the Brave never even got a 4K release in the US)
Agree with most of what you said except for female character critique. What's the point of wanting other develop characters if they're not the main focus? The problem of saying a minority role is not developed is that people will want EVERY single minority role the most important aspect. Which should not be desired. I'm not going to hate The Godfather or The Dark Knight because they don't have good black or autistic characters. Nor would I care because I'm not concerned of my identity being desired the most in any story. I just want a good story. Why would I look for good male characters in a female driven role? The critique is ridiculous.
"Human apple stores"-- haha! good one. I had no idea he directed "Only the Brave" as well. I'm a wildland firefighter, so it's a guilty favorite of mine. I did a video on the "Hero's Journey" aspect of "Tron: Legacy," specifically the stage known as "Atonement of the Father." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zBLAAjhRQGk.html& I'm curious to know what you think, considering your deep dive was so well thought out. Cheers, from a fellow deep diver.
I'd love to see more on the nuances of Tron Legacy's hero's journey. I feel like it's juggling Sam and Kevin pretty deftly, and while you may not be into the traditional Christian reading of atonement in Tron, I think it may be worth exploring on a purely story level. Folks tend to laugh off the story of Tron Legacy, but I find it to be really satisfying.
I'm from the future and let me tell you something. Top gun maverick is the most michael bay that isn't directed by michael bay even the latest michael bay movie ambulance doesn't have any michael bay tropes but top gun maverick does
