Joseph Portelli keeps a very low profile but his name is very synonymous with the construction sector.
In this exclusive Times of Malta interview, he discusses construction, money, his relationship with politicians and Ħamrun Spartans. And he does it while sitting atop Mercury Towers, the highest building in Malta and his most ambitious project yet.

I advise Mr Portelli to go and see how things are done on the Croatian coastline. I was in Rovinj ( Istria). They built the new Marina with a huge hotel. That hotel is set in a hill. The terraces have lots of green plants and the whole building beautifully blends with the environment. The same with the promenade and the Marina. Xlendi is ruined. I was there a few months ago and what they built on the left side on the hills is monstrous. It completely ruins the scenery. It seems to me that the architects in Malta have no idea how new buildings should be set and blend with the environment they are in. Look at Sliema coastline. Just concrete and glass. There is nothing beautiful about it. Compare it the beautiful houses and villas that used to stand there before. But due to greed of the local owners of those buildings, they were sold for profit and redevelopment. And what happened? Instead of a row of beautiful villas you have a huge block of high rise flats. No sunlight for the flats in the row behind the seafront apartments, hardly any green spaces which soak up the heat during the summer etc. What a shame.

The temporary barrier on that roof represents perfectly what is wrong with this country. Here is a renowned architect, of all people, that has no problem with the appalling lack of safety immediatelyaround him. As a barrier, temporary or otherwise, that abomination is the only thing that stands between living and certain death should anyone go anywhere near it. This is strictly prohibited in ALL civilised countries where anybody responsible would be immediately fired and de-licensed. Yet in Malta, this is nothing out of the ordinary to the extent that both a senior architect and a news reporter have no qualms about sitting casually 1 metre away from certain death. Malta must be the laughing stock of Europe!

An other stupid interview why is he asking him if it's the only tallest building in Malta when clearly it's is the only one that high and Malta definitely doesn't need an other 100 years off building

It is very embarressing what a lousy job this so called "journalist" Mark is doing. He was totally emotional, not serious, complaining, unfair, unbaised. To make it shore: A badly informed, jealous for success and money, just a provocing hippie. Very sad this apprearence. From sus to cringe. The archtiect Joseph was calm an serious the whole time, never mind that this Mark was constantly bugging and making awkward comments. Thanks for the general insights into Maltas modern architecture, but this Mark is really not fit for this job.
