Lol bro I could not believe they had Rudy covering Luka iso on the perimeter at the end. Rudy is not a perimeter defender, he's a RIM defender. That shit was absolutely wild lol
Most critics just completely ignore this. They say Rudy shouldn’t have won DPOY because he struggles to defend on the perimeter. But the wings that are favoured over him can’t defend in the paint or at the rim. They praise Luka for being great in isolation then crucify Rudy for his defense against Luka in isolation
Check Pat's defensive stats for that series. Could Pat guard Hakeem? They had each other locked up most of the series. 94 Finals was decided by perimeter shooting, of which the Rockets much more of than the Knicks.
@@williamferraro6581 I did check and the stats back it up- 29 pts out of a team 87? avg along with efficiency? Stats aside, knick fan here, eye test and brain test watching it at the time was a constant "oh shit- dude is just better."
@@larrycohen5553 No argument, Hakeem was the better player. But here are the stats from the 94 finals: Ewing averaged more rebounds, more blocks, and as many steals as Hakeem. They attempted nearly an identical number of shots (Hakeem actually less so). And both men finished the series with a defensive rating of 95. The problem isn’t that Ewing couldn’t guard Hakeem. It’s that Ewing point blank wasn’t making shots, even poorly contested ones. And Hakeem shot .500. That was the big difference. But in terms of protecting the rim, cleaning the boards, forcing Hakeem to pass up shots, keeping him away from the rim, etc, Pat was elite all series.
@@williamferraro6581 Huh? Dream averaged 27 per game. Ewing averaged 19 while taking more shots. That's the series right there. If Ewing played Dream anywhere near even, that's a 5 game series win for the Knicks. Knicks shot (a good for the time) 34.3% from three in the series. The Rockets shot 30.3%. Dream was the problem, not the threes.
Basketball IQ is very important. In that situation, you must know that a two pointer doesnt hurt you as much as a three pointer. Even if Rudy is not a peremiter player, you are a DPOY so he should have been up on the 3pt line begging him to come in the lane where he has help. He overplayed the drive which is why Luka was able to step back to hit the 3pt shot.
Here’s the thing about defense. You can put numbers on it. Most often, when you play good defense and they miss, that’s not a stat for you, just a miss shot for them. I agree with ppl saying Bam.
Really Brunson??? Because I remember Draymond Green, Dwight Howard, Ben Wallace, Olajuwon, DeAndre Jordan, and Michael Jordan getting iso'd at the end of games and losing the battle. DPOY is about overall games but it's about individual matches too and a GOOD coach (you don't even have to be a great one) can draw up a few plays EVERY game to take even the best defender out of their element. Gobert being a 7ft'er is more more prone to those specific schemes because, by nature, he isn't going to be as quick as a perimeter player. I think Gobert only gets the hate he does because he only really has defense although (stat wise) he has Green beat in EVERY category except assists and steals. EVERY. STAT. To that end, Gobert isbfar more of a beast on defense than Green and many other recent DPOY's. Problem is, he is a throwback defender to the days of Rodman and Ben Wallace who couldn't guard perimeter players wither but didn't have to... because that's not the way the game was played then. In the switch all, switch every position NBA of today, most premier defenders are preferred to be shorter and speeder to make up for lack of height and to be able to switch onto (and guard) multiple positions. That's not Gobert. So why is everyone acting like that's his defense game. So he got iso'd at the three point line by one of the better shooters in the league? Props to Jason Kidd for drawing up the switch. A few seasons ago Curry, busted a three on LeBron James' dome to send them home. Was James not deserving of those 6 all defensive nods? Was he then somehow a terrible defender because of it. No. Of course not. It wasn't even the first time James has been iso'd in thr clutch and lost the defensive battle. And unless he returns this summer, it won't be the last. No one had anything to say when Minny was blowing through the comp in the regular encounter to a dominate end to the year that saw them blow through teams on their way to the WCF. But off of one series, one play, Gobert is suddenly garbage? Gtfoh! There really are some haters out there. And Brunson is one of them!
Low IQ post... Gobert has got played off the floor every year in the playoffs because he's not versatile enough to play defense. Just cause you yap doesn't make you intelligent or give you any basketball insight. You should go and actually watch the games...
Lowkey disappointed in JB for that. JB is the exact kind of player who can get a max deal for playing one side of the ball who should appreciate a player like Rudy. I blame Draymond for the Rudy hate/bullying. Rudy is making a gazillion dollars to play a game and will be in the HOF so he doesn't need sympathy, but it's just odd how he's become the guy everyone points to as overrated.
Who had a better defense last year? New york or Minnesota. Better question: Is anyone a hall of famer talking, other than Ewing? New york is so arrogant that it's disgusting. I got dumber watching and listening to guards that will never win nothing.
