I was at this clinic and even participated at one with my horse. There is many ways to do the trailer loading. I've been to Parelli's clinic as well. I think that we have to know many ways and use it if it fits with the horse we have to train. If not, we can use another way, the one that will work with that particular horse, whenever we've learn it from. As long as it is working, the horse understand it and it's safe. Have fun with your horses!
Read the beginning of this video again for a second. The complete time it took to "explain" to this horse to load calmly in the trailer was approx 45 min. The video is 7 min. Obviously you cannot see the learning curve or stage of the horse "understanding" what you are asking. Now tell me this horse is nervous and afraid for no reason when he loads at approx 5 min and up. One thing is for sure. The clearer your message is, the faster your horse will understand. :)
I'm talking about the part where you want the horse to go forward. Where the horse is running circles around you/ where you make him nervous and afraid of you for no reason. Why would I end up in the hospital?
The lovey dovey line of horse training is a thin one. Some people cannot see the difference and get hurt. Petting a horse on the head and telling him how nice he is will not load him in the trailer, but could potentially send you to the hospital :)
@workingdogbarney ..Obviously you miss the point of the exercise. Josh Lyons was not showing that "he" could do it, but showing an easy way for "anybody" to be able to teach their horse to load in a trailer. Using a bridle is what 95% of riders are using to control their horse so I'm not sure what you are talking about. Olympic dressage rider, NRHA reining champions, hardcore cowboys or trail rider would probably have a different opinion about that. Have a nice day :)
That is why the full cheek snaffle is used. So you have the maximum contact or surface area to bring the whole head towards you. If you look closely you can see that he's trying to "hold" the pressure. Not pulling more than necessary. The horse makes the pressure and releases itself. They learn quicker when they can understand to give by themselves.
Meh, video was okay. Method, not too bad. I just like Monty Roberts way to do it better. I also don't like trailer that don't have a ramp because it always looks like the horse thinks he's going to fall off the edge of the earth LOL :) I didn't get the bridle comment.... But that is why I think parreli people are kinda crazy...
