Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn received the Cannes Film Festival's Best Director award for his 2011 film about a stuntman who picks up extra cash as a getaway driver. An art-house action movie in the tradition of WAGES OF FEAR and ROAD WARRIOR, the film stars Ryan Gosling as the existential stunt man along with a remarkable supporting cast including Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman and Albert Brooks, who won several critic's awards including the National Society of Film Critics for Best Supporting Actor.

Drive is an absolute masterpiece.

The best thing about Drive for me is the performances and characters of Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman. Albert Brooks is like a whole different person and absolutely menacing. And I love how they own the pizza shop. Would love a spinoff with them

Agree with everything. And 'Only God Forgives' is just as good! 'Valhalla Rising' is special, too. You gotta love Mr Refn for assuming the audience have brains.

I thought it was a remake of "Shane", right to the ending.
@kamuelalee
@kamuelalee 3 года назад
Yeah, me too. To me, Drive seems like a mix of Walter Hill's The Driver with George Stevens' Shane. Of course, Drive is bassed on a novella by James Sallis.

Drive is the best crime/Neo-noir film made in the last decade, hands down.

Josh should watch The Driver.

I'm not one to get upset at continuity errors or set-piece mistakes, but when Gosling's character was driving backwards on the freeway at freeway speeds(?!), and from the sound of it still shifting gears!, the audio in that chase is non-stop gear-shifts and revs between shifts, and Gosling's hands never leave the wheel.

I think this was great remake of Walter Hills classic "The Driver"
@kamuelalee
@kamuelalee 3 года назад
Not a remake but certainly an homage to Walter Hill and Michael Mann movies, as was stated. Also, the movie Drive is based on a novella by James Sallis.

As it's obvious from the trailer, the movie was marketed as an action movie which it is not. So when the Fast And The Furious crowd went to go see it and expected that kind of a movie and instead got Drive, there's where all the bad reputation this movie has came from.
@crithon

hmmmm I did feel that because Bryan Cranston was in it I could name any number of Breaking Bad episode that topped this film.
@crithon

***** Yes, I mean the first scene is wonderful and I wish the film kept up with that level of expectations. This isn't the worst film in the world and it doesn't just earn my total rage over it. But my mind just wandered and kept going "well there's ron pearlman, I've seen him in better films."

I always thought this is a favourite among critics. But movie nerds are as nerds use to be: very brainless when they flock. It is not important what they really as individuals think, only they think "right" at the moment. And if they define themself opposite mainstream critics, then...

Good movie, though I preferred part 1 of The Place Beyond the Pines. In Drive Gosling's character maintains too much eye-contact to be significantly on the autism spectrum. Just say'n.

Drive is great but is essentially just a compound result of Thief 1981 and The Driver 1978, even going as far as mimicking Tangerine dream's Synth score on Thief. Still Drive is awesome and infinitely better than Refn's style and no substance follow up Only God forgives.
@zacharycaruso2935

+SonOfMonsterMagnet Thief comes nowhere remotely in the realm of Drive. Where Thief was corny and cliched, Drive was brooding and shocking.
@sonofmonstermagnet1645
@sonofmonstermagnet1645 8 лет назад
Thief was corny and cliched! How so? It's one of the finest neo-noir crime thrillers of its era. Thief has proven highly influential, it often appears at the top of Best of film lists from the 1980's. Nicolas winding refn the director of Drive himself has admitted the huge influence Thief had on his film. I think perhaps you need to rewatch Thief.

Absolute garbage with only a few supporting performances of note. Gosling is LAUGHABLE in the lead...(and, like Gosling, Mulligan is an emotional vacuum as the romantic interest). ...I laughed out loud in the cinema when Gosling was trying to be cool and tough. The millennials got pissed off but then again they wouldn't know art if it bit them in the ass. Where is the director now?
@kamuelalee
@kamuelalee 3 года назад
Refn is still famous and still making movies.
@joemadden4160
@joemadden4160 3 года назад
He has no talent. A complete hack. I take it you one of those who can't tell the difference between art and dross, right? The vast majority of directors today are nothing more than rich kid homagers, and not artists. Go watch a Bresson or a Kurosawa or a Bergman or a Hawks instead of sub par Peckinpah's like this lump.
@joemadden4160
@joemadden4160 3 года назад
Really? His followup to Drive was so awful that it too was laughed out of the cinema. Still famous? Doing endless interviews about Drive? He's a hack.
