Absolutely correct. The schools with the power have no reason to be interested in this. Note, for example, that the president of Syracuse is a major player in this plan. Of course, his football program has no where to go if the ACC implodes. The best hope for Cuse is a weakened ACC. Or else it is doom. So, he likes the idea of the SEC and B1G sharing the wealth. Why not?

I like this proposed 80 team super league idea a hell of a lot more than the B1G/SEC cartel being the end-all and be-all.

@JoshPate I think you need to update your TV contract graphic to include recent realignment. The Big 12 contract, for example, was $380M for 12 schools. The Big 12 had a pro-rata clause that was triggered with the addition of the 4 corners. That contract is now $505M ($31.6×16). I'm not sure how the Big 10/SEC contracts changed. The ACC contract did not change with the addition of Cal, Stanford, and SMU.

I think 80 is too big of a number, 50 is large enough to me and I would not make that membership static, but a system of dropping off and promoting up new teams 2 or 4 every year, like the English Premier League. This would create incentive to the best outsiders to improve and to the lagging insiders to fight their way from the bottom. This will also make any program like Miami, of which I am a fan, to wake up and do what is needed to remain competitive instead of living off their past glories for 20 years. Things would be interesting, but remembering the top 25 ranks of every year, I think 80 is too large a number for a superior quality league.

This all feels like some shucking and jiving to ultimately end up being the CFL "College Football League".

Like Josh said it’s the SEC and BIG 10s world. I just wish they’d hurry up and do whatever they’re going to do. It’ll be some type of pay for play type thing. I just hope that it’s innovative enough to keep all the other sports and a some of the tradition when it’s implemented.

SEC and Big Ten will never give up their conferences to that. As George Bush 1 would say, “Not gonna happen. Not gonna”. It’s DOA. They might continue to expand, almost certainly will, but at most to 24 teams. Even that is a stretch from the money point of view. They probably would agree to a Tier 1 consisting of an expanded Big Ten, SEC, and Big 12, with a 16 team playoff with 4-6 teams from each in it plus a wildcard or two to get to 16. So, you’d have 72 teams with 3 Power Conferences and a 16 team playoff. Perfect. Have a Tier 1 Commissioner and commissioner’s office working with the Power 3 Conferences regards to structure, rules, how players get paid, etc. with the Power 3 input. The other 60 some Div 1 teams can have their own conferences and own playoff as Tier 2 teams. Problems solved. Thank Mark Roger’s over at The Voice of College Football for this proposal.

I've tried to look more into it but haven't been able to find much beyond the same couple reddit mentions, so I guess grain of salt and all that. I have no belief that the conferences will go away with at least some consideration to the point that they get some FOIA and maybe other protections by having private schools involved. Of course, since schools like Miami and USC are (i just learned this btw) private, the super league could be eligible for them too without having to make a spot for Vandy or Northwestern, but if there's any questions or concerns about a new entity inheriting the protections they won't want to risk it imo. Could be overthinking it, but I imagine it's been talked about with any of these crazy meetings they have.

Splitting college football into an 80 team super league without relegation seems to be the best case scenario for the sport.

I think it's time to take the SEC and Big 10 down a peg or three -- hundred. Remove their power by force and then implement this Super League plan.

This is a bad take. B1G fans and SEC fans are excited about expansion because it means better conference games. I wish B1G would go to 10 conference games. SEC is doing its fans a disservice by sticking to eight. Numbers don’t lie. No one wants to see KSU vs. Baylor or Wake vs. Syracuse.

I've been saying for years the Power 5 need to split off from everyone else. It's ridiculous for Alabama to play Liberty. Division 1 is too bloated.

It’s really a shame that coaches like Franklin, Day and others plus the Big Ten president had a hand in running Harbaugh out of Big Ten. It’s a shame a great coach like that left Big Ten because of professional jealousy.

The B1G and SEC are big boys in college football, but they are not close to the NFL. Has anyone thought that the NFL might actually have a stake in the future of college football? They also might see the potential money they could make by getting involved. They already have a union, collective bargaining, etc. and see the chaos now as a chance to make their own college football conference. This plan had flaws, but the fact that there was an NFL official involved in the plan should raise eyebrows. I can see why the SEC and B1G don't like it, which is they don't want 80 teams. But there could be another reason - NFL. Let's face it the NFL tells TV networks what they want, not the other way around like the SEC and B1G. There was 123 million people who watched the Super Bowl, compared to 25 million who watched the CFB championship. If the NFL gets involved it changes everything. The SEC and B1G don't want that, so they are going to have to let more teams in or risk the offended schools with good college football teams getting left out running off to be a farm system team for the NFL. Less money at first no doubt, but preferential treatment by the NFL for their players in terms of training, and perhaps even the draft.
