The model has interesting ratings here, certainly a different way to look at it rather than the regular "rankings" we get in the polls. Will be fun to see how it changes over the season.
Man I love polls like this...even though it's not a poll. I wish AP and Coaches polls were brave enough to do stuff like this. I think my biggest issues with any poll, but particularly with having a preseason poll, is that we let the perception of the poll dictate movement. It's a lot like weight, easy to gain, hard to lose. If you start at the top and lose, you'll move down a few spots depending on who its to, and what the loss looked like. If you're outside the top 25, though, it doesn't matter who you beat, or by how much, more often than not they're going to "reassess" their view of the higher ranked team and push them down enough that they don't have to push you up too much because man alive do pollsters hate being proven wrong. I'd personally love it, like come on college football surprise me more, just give me pure chaos you know. But yeah if that unranked team does that, their win has less value BECAUSE they won and were unranked. If they lose even one game in the future it's just proof that both teams were trash, not that one team was severely undervalued.
>A&M at 10 Oh boy, I remember the last time anyone rated us that high. We ended up giving up a 30+ point lead to UCLA, lmao. Time for more pain and disappointment!
How did Georgia tech not even scratch the top 25? They looked great on Saturday against a “ranked/power rated” top 25 team. Could’ve easily won by 9 without a facemask on a sack and a missed field goal
Maybe it's a week 0 thing? Teams never look the same early on as they do late season, especially when you fly all the way over to Ireland. But I do see your point, they should be ranked
@@GavinSchmavin44 and I’m not saying they should be ranked higher than FSU because I think if they played again FSU would be favored like Josh talked about, but it’s just weird that they’re not even in the top 25
How are you still confused about these ratings 🤦♂️ it’s because there are 25 teams that would be favored over Georgia Tech on a neutral site. These aren’t rankings, they’re ratings.
Semantics RE: power rating, not power ranking. Ranking is defined as a position in a scale of achievement or status. In this case, the scale in use is the power ratings the model spits out. I understand it's not a "ranking" poll like the AP or coaches poll, but defining a position of 1 through 25 by running an analysis and putting the highest resulting value at the top of a list and the rest in descending order...those are rankings, brother.
Reasonable pre season power ranking, can't wait to see what the teams show us on game day. Josh, you always come across as a neutral resource that's just following the facts, I appreciate that.
No offense. But I think baking camp intel if subjective into the model and making that objective for measure is very emotional. lol. Camp intel is literally what people think based on observations. FSU proved that means little on Saturday. Some coaches will be right in their honest assessment of their program. But that’s why we play games in Saturday. So teams like GT can go out and own FSU on line of scrimmage and prove how worthless camp intel means on a Saturday. Nevertheless thankful for the JP poll and much prefer power rating over rankings. Keep up the good work!
0:01 JP Poll is a Power Rating. (Updated after each Week of games, this season is the 2024-2025 CFB Season) + The Model takes into account injuries each week 1:30 #1-#5 is Unchanged #6 Penn State 🦁 #7 Ole Miss 🅾️Ⓜ️ #8 Notre Dame ☘️ 2:29 Penn State and Ole Miss 2-Point Dropoff. 3:04 #9 Michigan. Up 2 spots due to camp intel. 3:26 #11-15 3:43 #12 Oklahoma 4:28 #13 Miami
As a Miami fan obviously I want to beat FL but If we lose which is entirely possible we can still have a great season and honestly I don’t see us possibly losing until at Louisville so we could be 7-0 or at least 6-1 going into that game
it’s training camp before the season ofc nuss throwing picks he’s a new qb trying to figure out who he can trust to go up and get one. i do know one of the picks was him getting pressured and he tried to throw it out of bounds off his back foot and it didn’t make it all the way and got picked.
I imagine it’s like this. There is a rating for players based on previous seasons, and even average growth from season to season. Freshman are rated per recruiting metrics and scaled to the college level. Camp intel is used to try to make the growth of a rating more accurate. For example Ryan Williams may be rated an 80 as a top tier freshman recruit, but after intel & footage of him in practice he becomes an 85. It is subjective to, more than likely, biased information though as we saw with FSU’s DLine.
1) Fall camp intel is an absolutely ridiculous thing to take into account. Not many teams are going to say “my WR’s suck and can’t get any separation”. Even if there was film showing that, the fans of that team and coaches would just say it’s elite DB play. We just saw this with FSU. Apparently their DL was one of the best in the country. In reality, their OL and DL are not good at all. 2) it’s incredibly biased towards teams who are willing to share that intel. I’m a Utah fan and Whittingham treats his team info like it’s classified information. So none of the most important info would ever become available. The only fall camp information that should matter are injuries to key players.
It's all bullcrap by him... Penn State above Ole Miss? Neutral spot Penn State wins? Hahaha... Ole Miss is better this year and won last year. It's his list and he don't want to own it. He wants to always be right!
It’s funny how wrong you were about FSU and it’s even funnier how wrong you still are about Clemson‼️Also there isn’t a world were ND is 11 places ahead of Clemson🤣🤣
Not in a power rating they aren't. No one who understands odds making or wants to make money would put them as a favorite vs UGA or OSU on a neutral field.
I know these are ratings and not rankings, but how can Georgia Tech not even be rated??? Yes, they only won by three, but they dominated on both sides of the ball. I love your show, but I will always look at your ratings differently now. Almost, as if they are meaningless.
True followers of college football, who realize Georgia Tech played this style of football the last four games of last season and the first game of this season will probably not favor more than 25 teams versus Georgia Tech. I respect your opinion, Josh, and I still enjoy your show.
Could go one of a couple ways.. either it's a close game down to the wire and everyone contemplates how "bad" PSU is, or Penn State wins with a good amount of breathing room and no questions really get answered
You rank Florida, a team who HASNT PLAYED YET, over Georgia Tech, who just showed up and beat #10 FSU with an elite o line / defense / offense. You’re weird for not ranking Georgia Tech. I’m sick of the college football media degrading GT. We will be ranked. No doubt about that
For all you losers crying about Georgia Tech and FSU: it’s a Power Rating. If they played again tomorrow FSU would still be favored. The result of last week is we call an “upset”
