Josh Pate Talks Oklahoma Tailgating Controversy (Late Kick Cut)

Oklahoma Football has been in the headlines for just about every reason possible in the past year. First it was a coaching departure, followed by the hiring of Brent Venables. Next, the Sooners landed a top 10 signing class. Lately though there has been one bit of news that has soured the fan base. Oklahoma has become yet another university designating bigger tailgate space for corporate use on Saturdays, sparking a wide negative reaction. Where does the balance of profitability versus sustainability enter the equation? To maintain the uniqueness of College Football, can we really afford to bleed every last dime out of the game day experience the way NFL franchises choose to operate? Let us know what you think in the comments below and be sure to SUBSCRIBE to the channel and CLICK THE BELL for notifications as we bring you multiple live shows per week!

From a Texas fan to Sooners: it’s too late. There is nothing you can do to stop this. You can’t shame people who don’t feel shame. Texas officially corporatized tailgating at UT in 2019 (though for decades they made it harder to tailgate on campus if you couldn’t afford a parking space on campus). Now die hard Texas fans who aren’t wealthy have to tailgate off campus. It’s made the gameday atmosphere more like a carnival and less like a football game.

Trust me, us Oklahoma fans are not happy about this. It makes no sense for Coach V to constantly preach about making Oklahoma the ultimate college football fan experience and then the university limits who can come by charging money that'll mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. You can say "oh, it's just a few areas, it's not a big deal" You really think they would stop at a few areas? If they get no push back from the fans it's a guarantee they will continue to grow the areas you'll have to pay at.

Hi 👋 OU student here. It’s not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. They are taking part of another parking lot and a few other areas to the east of the stadium. There is still plenty of areas where you can get hammered at, believe me we’re finding them right now in our fraternity.
@TheBenzwanger
@TheBenzwanger Год назад
If it's not that big a deal, and they won't make hardly any money off of it in the grand scheme of things, why do it? If the point is to get as many fans going to the area as possible this isn't it. It makes what coach V wants even harder. You don't understand this is just the start. You think it just stays to a small area? You let them start doing it and they won't stop. They'll just keep growing the areas that you have to pay for. Those of us who are way past the student stage have been watching the college football fan experience disappear slowly for years. That's why the fans need to make it clear now they don't support this.

Bama splits it in half between “private” and public tailgating on the Quad. Public tailgating is free and first come first serve for the half of the Quad closest to the stadium. The “private side” has plots sold to companies and people who may not have their own tailgating equipment (spots can come with tents, tables, chairs, TVs, ice/coolers etc.) or able to get out as early as the others. So while theirs a good bit of companies out there, there’s also plenty of family reunion tents etc. that are tailgating through the “private” section. I think it’s a great mix and something other schools should look at it!

Maybe the students should all show up to the private tailgating area and just tailgate anyway. They are dues paying students and they have already paid for their right to be there. The way I see it, the university has no right to tell them they can't use that portion of the campus. Especially when non-students can. If they're kicked out of the private areas, the Student Union should do a class action lawsuit to fix that.

It used to be where the old Bud Wilkinson Dorm was. But to your point the University of Oklahoma has built new buildings and new campus parking lots where tailgating was allowed in years past. They have taken away tailgate spots in the past when they built dorms right across from the South end of the stadium but the new commercial spaces were not public tailgating in the past. Oklahoma has never been a tailgating school. The stadium is in the middle of campus, and most parking is done in the yards of local homes. There was always some beer drinking and light grilling in the RV lot (quite a distance away). Support the Varsity O Club, and get one of their burgers thats been good enough for me for over 40 years...or go spend some money on Campus Corner. Josh, the tailgating at OU will always feel contrived because it's a "new money" venture anyway...it was simply nonexistent until maybe 15 yrs ago.

Spot on Josh. Understand the University of Oklahoma just announced they took in record donations FY 21/22. Well, over $100 million. GFMS has sold out for decades. 82,000 plus, every home game. Yet they want to charge the real hardcore fans $750 bucks for a tent to tailgate under. This is not Jackson State. Fans drive hundreds of miles to cheer for and damn near worship the OU football team. Does this administration not understand a large portion of the 75,000 that came to the spring game will or at least wanted to come tailgate? But for the sake of a few "pennies," they are telling the fans that drink Keystone and eat hotdogs to stay away. It's petty and sad. Caught you on the "Oklahoma Breakdown" Great segment.

My Lazy boy is more comfortable than stadium seating. You can see more aspects of the game on a 4k UHD projector than you can in seats. Better quality and less expensive beer in my fridge next to the lazy boy. No waiting in line for food I can either grill while still watching the game or get it delivered to me. No lines at the bathroom and no puke on my toilet seat. And greatest of all no ridiculous traffic patterns wasting half of my day coming and going to the stadium. Head coaches now making $10 million per year. Wasn't long ago $3 million was the norm. All this realignment media BS money is just to pay the coach excessive money.

OU Fans... Get the word out, and gather as many Fans _who currently have Tickets to a Game,_ or they are Season Ticket holders. Set up a Date/Home Game meeting place, preferably in one or 2 of the remaining "Free" Tailgate areas. Then, right as the fans start heading towards the Stadium for Kickoff... Every single OU Fan walk up to the Gates, turn, and leave. Hopefully, if enough people would agree to it, the Stadium would look close to empty! Just a thought. Gotta do something to get the University's attention! Let them know that FANS control the game, not bean counters.

That would work for the Kent State game but not any others.

@@mark_a_vigil If it won't work, then do something else. It was kinds just a jumping off point. I don't have a dog in this fight, but I absolutely CAN see where this might be headed. I may not be an Oklahoma fan, but I am a fan of College Football, and this is exactly the kind of thing that other Universities will try to copy. No doubt about it. This is "Personal Seating Licenses" and "Preferred Parking" all over again... It starts small, then the next thing you know the entire NCAA is doing it. Anyway, my thought was that a message needs to be sent to everyone at OU who had a hand in this decision. A near empty stadium would surely send the right kind of message.

@@williamherman9065 I understand, but in the end do they care if people are in the seats? Yeah sure they do it would be nice to have people there, but if the stadium was sold-out as it always is and nobody showed up who cares the idiots bought the tickets, at that point fans would be wasting their money.

It has nothing to do with tailgateing it's money, the people that don't watch football want to control football facts! example 2020 the big ten basically said no football it was the coaches, students n staff that wanted to play, when the sec started their season no excuses the sec played by the rules covid didn't stop Greg , it is different talegateing n college football will never be the same again instead of renting a sky box you'll have to rent a spot where it was free now you have to pay, do you see the writeing on the wall I do n it's in bold letters.

OU is greedy. Sports know that people will pay to see them so they are going to take everything that they can from you.

I’m a capitalist. I’m all for the free market and taking advantage of money-making opportunities. But people forget the consumer is the driver of the free market. And the market fights back. This is an unnecessary move.
