It amazes me to look back to 1989; Brian Blade played drums on my Senior Recital at Loyola New Orleans. He was simply amazing back then and it was obvious he was going places much further than New Orleans could allow. I feel lucky to have played with him.
And all that with Brian Blade chillin out at the back... that drummer has to be THE most funky person in the universe! His skills are tight and as the guy said before me... bad ass!
I’m 14 and started to play tenor 1 1/2 years ago and this man continues to be one of my greatest contemporary heroes. Simply amazing. People need to look equally forward and back if Jazz is to survive
Man the last minute of this is so incredable. I love hearing him destroy those changes at the end of the solo. (Those changes are fucking amazing too). That moment is equally incredible on the record!
That is the funkiest groove goin round!! Fusion, funk, jazz, inside and out unison, whatever it takes to make a unique groove and sound!! It's just great to hear a group feeding of each other creating a masterpiece.
Incredible display of contemporary playing...This is soooooo good. I hope everyone sees how amazing this is and how jazz can be forward looking rather than backward looking.
Joshua is a great. If you like him you should check out his dad's tenor sax playing. Especially the stuff he did with Ornette Coleman. That guy's creativity blows me away every time.
Its more than Jazz, more than music,its got lots of different colours, even just the organ chords, its juggling, dancing, grafics, totally enjoyable,it makes my spirit jump and laugh, its kindergarten,highscool, university , all at the same time. It makes you immune to burocrazy and hierarchy(spell that)
Joshua Redman is my fav Sax player... He style is funky and I like funk.... Other favourite musicians are Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter... Just gotta luv the funkyness
For Jazz Students, Joshua Redman is a complete sax player. He created (composed) this song and is performing spontaneous improvisation on the melody. He has combined old school funk, jazz fusion and a healthy dose of inside-outside tonality. I have heard only a handful of Sax players execute all of this with the accuracy, tone quality and spot on intonation that Joshua is displaying. In short, he is a modern day sax god.

just a totally kick-ass tour-de-force peformance by these modern day greats taking over from where miles trane and bird and their contempories left off way back in the fifties-sixties. far out!
Yeah and then it gets cut short. It's nice when a soloist builds up a solo throughout the song, starting with simpler lines then reaching a climax. If he played that way the whole solo it would start to sound boring IMO.

He got a f... conversation between 2 voices in the sax...it's amazing! and the drums were the wine that make the dialogue more interesting...Great jazz!

joshua, a modern day John Coltrane for us. Brian just pushes the envelope for all drummers. Sam on organ is just as benchmarking as any player. this is the sh*t
