I've also contemplated the difference between these things. I've come to the realization that, like any art, writing doesn't have to be labeled and boxed up. Artistic expression can be sculpture, jewelry watercolor, woodcarving, writing, music... on and on. Within each media are so many styles. With journaling there is: Stoicism, Diary, memoir, bullet. Art journaling, junk journaling, note taking. Memory keeping. Just to name only a few. No matter what my personal style of journaling may be, I am not one to look at someone else's style and say, "That's not really journaling." But there will always be those folks who wear a royal crown in their mind and DO judge others craft. So, like in music, a guitar player cannot tell a drummer that they are NOT a musician because they differ. Anyways, I love to see people write, no matter their style, process, need or goals, or tools they use. We are all in this together!

I can relate so much to what you've said here, and I've also had a notebook by my side, day and night, my whole life. I've been a fan of yours on instagram and love seeing your content here. I think even a sentence a day in reaction to current events or a "headline for the day" is so valuable both for our own reflection to see growth and for posterity. Also, some of my favorite notebooks of my mom's are the ones she wrote grocery lists and phone messages in. I treasure those snippets of her day so much. Anyway, I appreciate your efforts and willingness to share your life. Also, your voice is so soothing! 🙂

The reference to your mother's grocery lists and phone messages made my tears well up. I thought about what my own sons might treasure. I don't know if your mother is still with you, but that is so moving and so insightful. Thank you for sharing that.

Some great ideas! I want a place to just be messy and not worry about whether I keep up with every detail. I journal almost daily, but I want a messy note taking place to keep random info that does not need the structure of journaling.

I’m still attempting to distinguish between journalling about memories vs. current events. I think I will record current events in my 5-year journal and reflect on my feelings in my daily journal. That way my thoughts aren’t repetitive in each journal. Interesting vlog and made me think a little about how I put pen to paper and in which niche it fit in.❤
@TrinaOGorman
@TrinaOGorman Год назад
Is it possible that you don’t have to distinguish between them?
@anastasia1522
@anastasia1522 Год назад
Interesting. In my language, there is no word for "journaling". I thought the kind of writing you do could be called "journaling", too. I don't distinguish between the two in my notebook, I do both and sometimes (but not always) one leads to the other. There are notes about things I learn, things that happen around me, opinions or thoughts or theories I might have about anything, writing about my own experiences and emotions, stories, sketches, calcuclations, even totally random descriptions of the moment because generating the sound and feel of pencil on paper is a kind of fidgeting for me. I was under the impression that any writing that has at least a little bit of personal perspective in it, a few "I"s, is "journaling". I'm thinking of starting a commonplace book though and transfer some of my notes in it, because they often get lost in the mess and I've spent an hour digging in my box of notebooks to retrieve some notes from a book I read years ago. 🤦‍♀ Edit: Thinking about it... could you tell me a little more about the index system you use? I could use it for my commonplace book.

I thought I responded to this, but I can’t see the response. If this is a repeat, please ignore it! I will do a video about the index I use.

I do private writing, but I don't necessarily label it, as what I write is a mixed bag. I've been doing so since 1975, when it was an assignment in a high school English class. You gave me much to think about, however.

Hi! So do I. My phone is a handy notetaking tool. I take notes digitally on iPad and computer, as well. Commonplace books have been around forever. I went to the NYPL archives and looked at some from the 1800s. They were cool, though the way they were done then made sense. They had to record things that we don’t need to record.

@@TrinaOGorman Very cool! Yes looking at older journals always interesting! Of course some people are very systematic with their notebooks or structured like bullet journaling … I’m a bit all over the place!

Hi Trina! Thank you for another lovely video! My question regards the Index (i plan to use in my next CommonPlace). You have alpha categories but I am unable to see what letters you have written beside the alpha, what they might signify. I can just see when I first try indexing that the largest section will be M for miscellaneous! Also, I’m in my mid 60s and haven’t journaled before other than common place. I purchased a book, ’The Book Of Me~A Do-It-Yourself Memoir’ which is full of questions i wouldn’t have thought of. I wish my family members who passed before me left something like this. I have no children so i don’t know whether anyone will read it when i’m gone. Thank you again Trina! Glad to have found you! kari, Victoria, BC Canada ❤

Enjoyed this video! I do see the difference, too, and in the past I've been picky about keeping the 2 types of writing in separate books. The notebook I'm keeping right now has been a little bit of both, b/c I'd let my writing habit slip and I just wanted to commit to getting words on paper every day, without a certain end goal in mind other than writing. I didn't think I'd like a situation where a vent about an argument with my mother resides in the same notebook as a poem in the works, and also notes about the intelligence of crows....but that's how this one has been going for me!

@@TrinaOGorman I think that's partly my lack of tech skills! I tend to watch YT on my laptop b/c the screen is larger, but it has the bonus of me being able to respond on a "real" keyboard. When I'm on IG, I tend to use my phone and I'm brief b/c hunting and pecking out letters on a tiny phone is not comfortable! Plus, I think in general there's more to respond to on a YT video b/c more is being said, vs. shorter captions on IG, overall!

I keep multiple notebooks, but they all have specific purposes. Some I keep and some I toss. The ones I keep are written with the understanding that someone other than me will eventually read them, most likely my children when they go through all my stuff after I die, LOL. I consider it to be a way to haunt them from beyond the grave with my words of wisdom that they are currently ignoring.
