I just saw him in Oslo, Norway (1 hour ago) and he was awesome. I had no clue who was the present vocalist of Journey. I only knew that it wasn't Steve Perry, although I had heard that the current vocalist sounded much like him. And indeed, he was great. And no, he's not 'just a copy' of Steve Perry. And what a life story he has. Someone should make it into a movie!

Incredible. I'm always amazed listening to Pineda sound like Perry when doing the legacy songs. It's not so much the likeness in timbre (where there can be honest debate), but in Pineda's honest portrayal of emotion and passion. What a stroke of luck for Journey in finding this guy!

I've taught singing for years! Arnel has an amazing 'natural' (untrained) voice, whose lack of vocal weakness, mannerism, defect or artifact, both defines and causes it to be...' perfectly' characterless; but that's a good thing. Such is the case with all the great 'young' opera singers too 'before' they discover the...defect of their own...'style' (musical idiosyncrasy), which ultimately wins them a place in the halls of operatic Valhalla, and ultimately a place in the hearts of fans; if not so too music lovers. But not for what they do right, but ostensibly for what they now do wrong. That something wrong of which I speak is in the very nature of particularity and character. Its both good and bad! Before Pavarotti sounded like Pavarotti (when he was still thin...nish), he had the perfect tenor voice; indistinguishable from hundreds of others, except that it was better; it suffered less defect of character, which is where things go both right and wrong if the natural voice isn't up to managing the technical duress it puts on the voice. Arnel's voice is richer, riper, and more controlled and resonant than any of those who did this sound before him, and for that reason alone he should be allowed his space and place in the pantheon of our appreciation. I've been teaching singing for years and you can't teach this, that's why it is so ridiculous that in the documentary 'Don't Stop Believing", Jonathon Cain presumes to school Arnel (possibly only for the cameras) with vocal exercises intended for lesser mortals. And its to Arnel's great credit that he both suffers the slight, and ignores the advice. Natural voices allow the music to speak, without ever getting in the way, because they service the music, instead of trying to overshadow it: a voice in service of music if you will, instead of music in service of a voice. One voice creates great music, the other creates great fan(s)atics, keen to attach themselves to a person. For those of you who are not professional musicians the former is the very definition of 'professional' musicianship while the latter is the very definition of dedicated amateurism. Both Perry and Pineda are tenors, except that Pineda has a warm gritty raspy tone, which becomes evident as he goes up the scale. Most rockstars prefer this as they sound masculine and gritty particularly on high notes. Perry has a high tone like Hitchcock of Air Supply. As they go up, they have this timbre that sounds feminish. Most successful male rock stars prefer this gritty edgy voice, like Steve Tyler, Bryan Adams, Kurt Cobain, Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi, Rod Stewart, to name a few.

The hardest Journey song to sing, I can sing up to the word Oooopeeeen....when I sing aarms my throat gets ripped to pieces. let alone if you survive that, yo uhave to sing that same pitch twice in one chorus, a lot of people died trying.

I think his voice is pure gold. One of the best voices of all time. I easily prefer him over all other Journey singers, including Perry. Perry's voice was a little more raspy than Arnel. I think you can hear the pure quality of his voice in this song. Thank goodness Neal Schon used the technology available to him to find the one he was seeking.

He’s got so much raw talent, charisma and stage presence and a comedian to booth! And you can feel how he sings them all from the heart, he’s compelling to watch.
