Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

How I envy having institutions like the RNLI or Coastguard available to you in an emergency. In Pacific Mexico, last year, I had an engine failure on a lee shore, two hundred NM's from the nearest safe harbor and there was no one to call. Local fishermen offered to rescue us but not the boat. The nearest Port Captain told us "not my problem". There is no RNLI or sea tow equivalent. Eventually we were able to conduct a self rescue but how we miss organizations like the coastguard.

The RNLI is truly an exceptional service. Our rescue services may not have the equipment capabilities, but they still have the determination, knowledge and dedication to service that mirrors that of the RNLI. Glad you are tucked up in a marina and not rusting away on a mud bank there Barry. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for helping to keep people safe on the water all those years.Sailing halfway around the world is huge Berry.Really is.But I can't help thinking about people you helped during your service, and how they felt seeing you coming to help.I've been there Berry.I was rescued by another boat. But Coast guard was flying over head. I can't explain in words how good that sound was.Your sailing achievements are a mile high stack of cherries on top of what was the real deal.Thank you.

Hey Barr! Russ here from the mountains of California again. You had me on a rollercoaster of emotion with this one. I read the title and said " Yea Barr, you made it through the first journey!". I started to play the video and thought " Oh no, does he mean end of journey forever? Noooo Barry!" The music you chose had me stressing about losing you to some New Zealand suburb....... "Adventures of a tired old porch dog" ha ha ha ha. Not yet! Brave Barry marches on and begins his second journey. The way home. I reckon that your home coming will draw a few more people than your departure hey? I'm excited to see the boat work and a kind refit on the shaddzter! An update from me, I got a nice swing keel trailer sailor back in Feb. and have been cruising some lakes around home here. Single handed is so difficult to learn and I admire your fortitude and perseverance. Have a beer for me while basking in the northern exposure this season! Cheers Russssssssss

You are amongst some of the most efficient sandblasted and marine painters in the world with a can do attuide Your problem 28th Shaddie is a noble metal issue....stainless steel is more noble than mild steel which becomes sacrificial when in contact with stainless and requires seperation/isolation from each other. I have been in the industry for 55+ years and finished my career as a corrosion consultant and am approching 70. Enjoying the pure realism of your journey and waiting for the refit and continuation. If you have some time, give a little thought to these words" “Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.” ~ Saint Augustine Yoy, Sir, are a wonder.

Lets do Helo Ops!!! I used to love doing this in the USCG. I'm one of the few in this world to have gotten picked up in a basket on a high hoist (100 ft. or higher) before the Commandant forbid them. The view from the basket above 100 ft. is something you have to see to really appreciate and you will get a panorama going up because the higher up you go the twist of the cable makes you spin increasingly faster. Some would prefer the horse collar to the basket.

With Google earth, my favorite globe, and my enthusiasm for what you are accomplishing, I vicariously took this trip with you to New Zealand.
