Sicily has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries and is one of Italy’s most interesting and beautiful places to visit.

Located at the center of the Mediterranean Sea, the island’s identity has been formed by cultures and traditions from Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Distinctly different from mainland Italy, Sicily offers stunning architecture, ancient archaeological sites, lively urban centers, spectacular natural scenery, delicious food, and friendly people.
In this video, I’m traversing Sicily, exploring some of the island’s most beautiful places. From the bustling streets of Palermo to the impressive baroque churches of Noto. From historic Greek temples in Agrigento to the religious celebrations around Catania’s festival of Saint Agatha. From peaceful nature reserves of Trapani to seaside towns of Scopello and Taormina. And from the stormy coastal city of Siracusa to the slopes of Mount Etna volcano.
This travel documentary was made in February 2023, when I had the chance to travel around Sicily for 2,5 weeks.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We start our journey in Catania, a dynamic city with plenty of cultural and historic sights. The highlight here is the Festival of Saint Agatha, one of Europe’s most impressive religious celebrations. Not far from here is Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, that we visit while covered in snow. Nearby Acireale is known for its spectacular carnival, one of the best in Italy.
We drive up the coast towards Taormina, a popular holiday destination with stunning mountain vistas, charming beaches, and a captivating ancient Greek theatre. In Siracusa, we encounter a massive storm that completely changed the atmosphere of this beautiful city. It’s in Noto that we admire the exceptional baroque architecture this corner of Sicily is famous for.
Through the hilltop village of Enna, located in a broad valley with panoramic vistas, we reach Agrigento, to visit the amazing Valley of the Temples. We briefly walk along the beach at Scala di Turchi, peculiar rock formations made of marl, before stopping in the fishing port of Sciacca, just in time to meet the fishermen returning to the town.
Poggioreale and Cretto di Burri are stark reminders of the earthquake that hit the Valle del Belice. Further West, we find the salt pans of Saline di Trapani, a protected nature reserve that was once the most important salt production site in Europe. A steep road up leads us to Erice, a medieval town with 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.
We travel onwards to the Gulf of Castellemare, a region filled with attractive villages and rugged coastal scenery, and visit places like San Vito La Capo and Scopello. We finish this journey in Palermo, the vibrant capital city of Sicily, to explore the lively street markets, eat some delicious food, and admire the striking buildings.

Super Great job Stef. What you captured on video and also the information you gave were top notch. I am Sicilian and will be returning there permanently in a very short while. I like that you went out in the 'cyclone' for a great meal, because that's exactly what I would do. But you are right to heed the warnings given as well of course. Sorry I missed seeing the snow. Such a great video, well presented and narrated, thankyou. I’m going to Sicily next year for one week. I’m staying in Giardini Naxos and will explore the east coast predominantly. Do I really need a car? My preference would be to use public transport if it’s available up and down the coast. If we go to Agrigento, is the transport available? Thanks again, Robert, Sydney Australia.
@stefhoffer
@stefhoffer 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for your kind words Robert, glad you liked the video. I honestly didn't explore the public transport options, as I wanted to rent a car for the whole island. But I did see plenty of buses going up and down the East Coast of Sicily. There are also train services. Enjoy your travels there next year!

Hi Stef, I’ve been following your videos for a long time and I greatly respect your work on many levels. Your video of Ethiopia is just outstanding. I am learning how to create videos and I have some observations and perhaps questions. In your earlier videos you seemed to use a tripod quite a bit as there was zero movement. If that was the case, wasn’t it rather cumbersome and inconvenient (though it yielded perfect quality)? I noticed in the Sicily video that most of the land based footage is handheld. Do you use a gimbal? Also, action cameras like GoPros are rather limiting in that you cannot control the depth of field so where do you elect to use them? I assume with scenes such as holding outside the moving car in the rain, and very low near street level. Oh, btw, you might wanna pick up the DJI mics. I just got them and they are quite good at suppressing wind noise. They have many features that you’d like. Great little system. Anyway, I’d enjoy chatting and thanks for making such wonderful videos.
@stefhoffer
@stefhoffer 10 месяцев назад
Thanks a lot for your kind words, I'm happy that you're enjoying the videos. Yes, I used to shoot a lot of static footage, sometimes on a tripod, but mostly on small bags filled with rice or beans (was a great little trick). Cameras have really progressed these days and it's easier to shoot good handheld footage as you know. In Sicily I did use a gimbal for a lot of footage. GoPros are useful for more unusual situations and angles, but you're right that they offer less manual control. I will look into those DJI mics, thanks for suggesting, and good luck with your video work! Best wishes, Stef

When I read the monumental Ab Urbe Condita Libri, by Tito Livio, something struck me as strange. During the II Punic War, Rome sent Roman soldiers who survived the catastrophe at Cannae to fight in Sicily. Marcelo's men, who saved themselves by retreating from the battlefield, would remain in Sicily for the duration of the war in Italy. Apparently this was a punishment for the dishonorable escape from battle, because their life away from their families would be much sadder, more difficult and dangerous than on the continent. This documentary shows a beautiful island, but with a somewhat unpleasant climate. Not to mention the earthquakes and the danger arising from the ever-active volcanism in Sicily.
