Welcome to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller, Alberta.
The museum is named after Joseph Burr Tyrrell, a 26-year old geologist who while working for the Geological Survey of Canada stumbled upon an impressive skull of Canada’s first known meat-eating dinosaur not far from where the museum now stands.
The museum officially opened to the public on September 25, 1985.
It is the only museum in Canada devoted exclusively to the science of paleontology, and has one of the biggest displays of dinosaur skeletons in the world.
It is home to more than 160,000 individual specimens, over 300 of which are holotypes (an individual plant or animal that serves as the basis for the description of a species).
This is a stunning must see museum for anyone that loves and has an interest in dinosaurs, paleontology and anything related to the earths prehistoric past.
This needs to be on your must see travel list if you visit Alberta.

What do you think of this incredible museum? It's truly mind blowing when you are there and realize all of this existed on this earth that many years ago.

As an Albertan, I love living only a few hours drive away from Drumheller and the badlands. The area is so interesting. From the beautiful landscape, the main museum in Drumheller (check out the Fossil World museum in town for a huge animated robot T.Rex) but also the history of the mines and ghost towns. Personally I would love to live in Drumheller or in the surrounding area one day. Awesome video!

When I was young I was fascinated with the museum. I'm more a field -type a guy. When I was 12 I was camping close by and giving education to all the smaller kids. That trip I found a few Dino bones. Everytime I show it to ppl they totally fascinated. While most places on the surface are picked-out there are places that are littered with dino bone and in which any step on the ground would step on a bone. I also took a gander up to Burgess Shale in the mtns. I've found fossils all over the mtns and creek beds. I also put the AV system in the Dino Provincial Park info center. So cool seeing the preparation lab. It was a special day.

As times goes on we learn more and more about them. Originally we didn't know they most likely had some form of feathers. We still don't have all the answers. Maybe one day some of the exhibits will be updated to reflect that.

Within Alberta alone we have atleast 5 museums that are for paleontology, going from Edmonton’s Paleontology Museum, to the Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur museum in Wembley all the way down to the Devils Coulee Dinosaur Heritage Museum in Warner... Then of course we have the Royal Tyrrell and a few others... In Alberta alone, 5% of the dinosaur species that have been found, have been found here. After rereading this, I sound like a “Keyboard Allen Grant” (not the intention), just thought I’d bring our other great museums that aren’t as well known to light.
