On the latest episode I'm joined by Dr. Annalisa Derr, a goddess educator, Sacred Feminine embodiment teacher, and ritual theatre creatrix. Annalisa completed her doctorate in Mythological Studies with Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She also holds a BA in Theater with specialized training in masked and physical theater from international master teachers in Italy, India, and NYC. Annalisa's work explores the impact that negative cultural menstrual “myths” have on women, which her forthcoming book will explore in more detail. Annalisa offers an affirming alternative in the form of an ancient myth, “The Descent of Inanna,” which she re-visions as a sacred menstrual narrative and ritual rite-of-passage.
During this episode we discuss:
*Annalisa's experience growing up in a Lutheran church, including the connection she made later between devotional Christian hymns and the Bhakti yoga tradition
The near total erasure of the Sacred Feminine in Protestantism, and why discovering Her can feel like such a revelation for many of us
How discovering Mary Magdalene sparked Annalisa's ongoing journey to the Goddess and led her to her current research
What Annalisa refers to as the menstrual mysteries, and how the Inanna myth teaches us about them and the nature of the Goddess Herself - as a gateway through the lessons of birth, death, and rebirth
Annalisa's pending move to Greece and her vision for supporting the reemergence of the Sacred Feminine in patriarchal strongholds
And a bonus - Annalisa becomes the third guest in the history of the show to bring me to tears (in a really good way)! Tune in to find out why.

This was a terrific interview, and I would LOVE to review your show and do what I can to help more people find your amazing content. Where and how do I post a review? I had so many areas of this conversation where I could completely relate. In the late '60s (yep, I'm a crone), I was attending a very progressive high school outside of LA in Claremont, CA. We were lucky enough to watch childbirth films, comparing the '50s way that doctors had coopted the entire process to serve THEIR convenience more. The film scared the crap out of me, and I thought if this is what childbirth was to be, I'd never be a mother. The second film was of a hippie couple having a home birth, and it was a rich, empowering, beautiful documentary of their experience. I got married to the son of an OB/GYN in '74, (amazingly are still together in spite of the journey I made to the Goddess, testing his whole Catholic family upbringing), and it was quite the shock to the family when I decided to have home births. It was a time when "The Immaculate Deception was popular, and Ina May Gaskin's book was a resource. Anyway, all three of our babies were born at home, and thank Goddess for the women who defied the laws to assist! To have Rites of Celebration for a young woman's first Moon Time, along with a rich and educational introduction to her own body, would be the beginning of empowering her in the spectacular matrilineal, ancestral power of BIRTHING naturally. I argued with my father in law that birth was a normal process and that women in my family never had difficulties, and I agreed to seek professional help if there were signs of distress. Subsequently, I attended friend's home births. One of my sisters-in-law had home births, (after a nightmare hospital birth where the doctor didn't show up till the last minute and lividly pushed me out of the way when I was helping her not tear.) My daughter had a natural childbirth and my daughter-in-law had their three babies at home. So, all of our grandchildren were born naturally. But the trend in the medical industrial complex is to conspire to undermine young women again, scaring them into unnecessary c-sections, and to prevent them from the most important ancient empowering rite of passage as women (goddesses). Also, regarding the Goddess temples in Greece, Emily Fletcher (Ziva Meditation and podcast 'Why Isn't Everyone Doing This?) and Layla Martin have coordinated in doing a 4 part series on visiting the sites Annalisa mentioned, and they, too, were abruptly stopped as they were chanting, dancing, even quietly singing songs of devotion. There is profound fear in the inevitable Shift to Her that is underway. Sorry for this long comment! Love You!

Love these reflections, Denise, and thanks so much for supporting the show and taking the time to share here! Reviews on the audio version of the show are so helpful. For example, if you ever listen to podcasts on Spotify or Apple those are great places to leave reviews. Also if you've read my book, reviews on both Goodreads and Amazon are amazingly helpful. Thank you for wanting to help me spread the word!
