Yes they played whole guitar solo on radio!!...the story is the record executives wanted to shorten the solo.....it was steve perry who said absolutely not👍🏻

Absolutely right they did. My FM station of choice at the time was K92 out of Roanke, VA. They had the coolest prime time Disc Jockey, a guy by the name of David Lee Michaels....always up in the "air chair", never failed to play this song in its entirety every single night at or near the close of his show around 10PM. Come to think of it, I still have the old 45rpm record, the original vinyl lp, the cassette & CD & all of them have Neal's full guitar riff. I've never even heard a version of the song without it.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nZTcKcr-nLs.htmlsi=2l6CxEl6TVJlB_c5 The above link is to an instrumental version for the song. Even with my untrained musical ears, I can pick out the bass that was mentioned by the previous poster. What's interesting about the instrumental version is seemingly how little the lead guitar is primarily involved throughout the song. Of course, that changes when Neal Schon takes firm control of the song for the last minute or so with an amazing solo. I'm not sure who made the decision to hold the guitar solo until the end, but it may be that the solo is so highly revered (beyond being brilliantly played) because the lead guitar is not really prominently featured but it just "busts the doors down" at the end. Knowing a band as musically proficient and such talented songwriters, one has to imagine that was not a coincidence. When Jonathan Cain, Journey's keyboard/piano player and a key songwriter, was promoting his autobiography not too many years ago, he was asked about the writing of "Don't Stop Believin'." While there have been or may be some differences of opinion about how much the song may have changed under influence from band members, the one thing that Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry have been consistent about in interviews is that Cain's original version had the classic chorus much earlier in and throughout the song, but Perry convinced Cain that there needed to be a "build up" to the chorus much later in the song. Given this was how "Don't Stop Believin'" was structured, it's not a stretch to think the conscious decision was made by the band to "build up" to Schon's solo in "Who's Cryin' Now" for maximum impact. It can be truly fascinating to learn how the music we know and love was created, along with the "what ifs" if other writing/performing decisions may have been made.

And, agree with previous comments on how incredibly good Journey is live. For this song to sound so beautiful live is testament to the pure musicality talent and professionalism of the whole band regardless of turmoil amongst them. Journey is in their own category. And so many forget this tune, but every time music appreciators hear, they react like you guys. New York radio is the worst, however, that outro was played on two big stations.

First time visiting here...guys, all of the members of Journey were heavy weights. Two players had been in Santana, the bass player had been in the Steve Miller Band, the drummer had been with Jean-Luc Ponty before he joined, Jonathan Cain had been with the band, The Baby's, and the icing on the cake was Steve Perry. The studio told Journey that Neal's solo was 'to long!' for radio play and wanted them to shorten it! Steve Perry wasn't having it! And argued with them about it. Steve told them that if the radio station wants to start playing the next song during Neal's solo. He doesn't have a problem with that. BUT they were NOT going to shorten it!! After a battle over the solo, the studio left the solo alone. You guys should react to the song from the 1981 Houston, Tx concert! And YES!!! Classic Journey is 'out of this world!!'

In regard to the ease (for him) of Steve Perry's vocals, "Mother Father - live in Houston" (from this same album) is an absolute MUST. You will be blown away by the notes he hits, LIVE, at the end of the tune. Another tune with a great Neal Schon guitar outro is "Stone in Love," also from the Escape album (now you see why it went *Diamond*). Also recommend the 'live in Houston' version.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aTTWwfFEbb4.htmlsi=p4KLzam1_gJ_GqHf If anyone wants to jump into the "way back machine," the above link is a TV ad promoting the "Escape" album from when it was released in summer 1981. As was mentioned by the above poster and others, "Who's Cryin' Now?" was the lead single off the album. Here's the especially interesting part: Often times, depending on how much power a band had with its record company and in its contract, the A&R executive (the person responsible for promoting singles/albums for that record label's artists with the media and making sure radio stations would be sent complimentary copies of songs to play on the air) might communicate with the record's producer and band members for suggestions about what songs should be singles from the album. Ultimately, in most cases with big time labels (like Columbia, the record company that Journey was on for its epic run), the decision on singles and in what order they would be released was likely made by higher up label executives. What is so incredible about this system and how it pertains to this song is that, in most cases, high-ranking executives from big time labels would choose the first single to be the song that they wanted to drive initial interest in the album from fans (to buy it) and radio stations (to play it). So, it was considered by most record labels at the time that the first single should be central to marketing the album and how that single was received might sink or skyrocket an album. As you can hear in the TV ad from that time, the Columbia executive who made the decision on the singles wanted the album marketed around "Who's Cryin' Now?", which is mentioned as the "featured single" in and prominently played throughout the ad. Of course, the irony of all this is that the second single off the album was "Don't Stop Believin'" and the third single off the album was "Open Arms," both which catapulted the band's popularity into the stratosphere and both are still considered "iconic" songs (of at least the 1980s). In retrospect, "Who's Cryin' Now?" is viewed by many as a severely underrated song in its excellence and popularity (which are both true), but Journey's record label thought, before the album was released, that it would be a bigger hit than "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms." Incredible stuff.

Mother Fathet live was always the song Steve said was his most difficult to pull off live but if you want to hear his falsetto you need to listen to Lay it Down from Escape or the live version of it in Tokyo. Escape really is their masterpiece record that made them Kimgs of Arena Rock but also the key creators of the Power Ballad.

What is special about Steve Perry's voice? Steve Perry has the range of a high tenor and solid alto and is considered a countertenor. He is a rare tenor altino, a rare form of countertenor, a voice that many consider incomparable. His voice is very recognizable and longtime friend of Perry's, Jon Bon Jovi, gave him the nickname, "The Voice."Aug 8, 2018 (copied from wikipedia)

I've been a fan of Steve's for over four decades, yes, I'm old... I've seen them in concert he sounds even better if you can believe that. The gift and talent he has is absolutely stunning. 🎶💕

This was a huge hit for Journey. It was on the radio all the time when it was released. Great to see Ryan hit the Golden Buzzer for Steve Perry. Ya, he's pretty good. Neal Schon's exit guitar solo is fantastic, goosebumps-inducing. You can really hear the influence of guitar legend Carlos Santana on Neal Schon. Many casual music fans probably don't know that Schon played in Santana's band in the early 1970s beginning at the age of 16! before moving on to form Journey.

Neal Schon is one of the cleanest guitarists ever. You don't hear his fingers sliding up and down the strings no matter how fast he plays unless it's intentional.

Y'all really need to get into more of Journey. Faithfully, Mother-Father, Open Arms, Dont Stop Believing, Lovin Touchin Squeezing, When You Love a Woman....there's just too many. They were everything in the 80's. The 1981 Live Houston Concert for MTV was amazing.

Great reaction guys! And Ryan, I do love me some Steve Perry so I know exactly how you feel. While I'm here I shall humbly ask again for you guys to react to the live version of "Mother, Father" from Houston 1981. Just keep an eye on Ryan, he might not be able to take it! 🤣

Nick nailed it. Steve Perry is similar to Freddy Mercury, they can sing whatever you want and it all sounds absolutely perfect.

Y'all were spot on about the radio airplay. We used to get SO bent when the songs were cut up like that. For multiple artists. When it's this good, the entire thing MUST be heard. I love how y'all love Journey. Great reaction.

Until Don't Stop Believin's resurgence, this was their biggest selling hit. This is definitely Perry channeling Sam Cooke. And they DID play the entire song on the radio, because Steve made them fudge the time (length) on the single and album so they wouldn't cut it short. It worked! This was my era and I remember hearing the entire thing every time.

@@randallwong7196 Open Arms reached higher in the charts, but this song outsold it. Now it's Don't Stop Believin', Separate Ways and Any Way You Want It.

You need to watch them via a live video! What you just des ribed as a "concert" senario is so high school! Invision a packed football stadium with a huge stage across one end containing lights, huge speakers, standing mics... The lack of music concerts these days is really sad.

You have to see them live! There’s nothing that Steve can’t do. Live he shows he is that good and better. Just walks around and sings like that! It’s amazing. Gotta do a live video to understand who your dealing with when it comes to Steve and the band. Fantastic song and album period!!

This is absolutely my favorite Journey song. The memories as a drummer in high school; Sophomore/Junior year (as it stayed on the charts so long), Perry's vocals, Cain's keyboards, the drum work, bass & to top it all, the best air guitar solo ending to this day - Neal Schon's multi-measure song ending riff! Loved the reaction guys!!

Journey ALWAYS makes me think of my brother who passed in 1982. I was only 16 yo. He had an old brown buick that he put an 8 track player in. He ordered his 8 track tapes from the back of those magazines. He took me and my youngest brother to Astroworld one summer and i distinctly remember "who's crying now" and "dont stop believing" playing. That was the last summer i had him as he died in a car accident at college. Its been over 40 years and those songs still wrench my heart.

You want to hear him hold a note, try "daydream". I don't know if they loop it in the studio, or his own breath control or circular breathing or what, but the note (in the 2nd verse) goes on way longer that you'd think someone could hold one

This was the first rock song I latched onto... as a kid of about 13, listening to a small transistor radio beneath my pillow, after bedtime. I listened to a lot of radio before I heard this song again. I had no idea what it was called, who sang it and I had no money nor means to go to the music store at the mall to ask or buy the single. Journey has always been my very favorite rock band.
