The post-punk funeral march. An utterly staggering piece of music that never fails to chill. When Ian first utters the word 'walk' at the beginning, we know it's not going to be an easy ride. It kind of encapsulates the sadness and loss surrounding the band and their tragic history. Long live JD and RIP IC x
Can you believe a 23 year old wrote these words? He was more than a singer-songwriter, he was a tortured poet. His music was the expression of his conflict and turmoil and no one knew it until it was too late
It's so hypnotic, pure. This man was a f.... genius. This band is immortal. 40 years and we are here, like we have a crush on this amazing band.. Thank you Joy Division, thank you Ian.
What is interesting is that despite the lyrics of Ian Curtis, Bernard said Ian was a joker, had a good sense of humour and was not walking around appearing to be depressed. If you listen to one of the only interviews of Ian, he sounds like a pretty regular guy.
Yeah, Ian Curtis is the greatest poet that’s ever lived and fronted a band There is nobody like Ian Curtis I wanna write a curriculum based on in for the English department “Ian Curtis is God” I don’t have my PhD yet but this song is destroying me They really are the best of all time. I’m voice texting because I’ve been crying.
Listening to these lyrics reminds me that despite all the romantisation of Ian Curtis and his death I hope NOBODY has the go through the things that he felt, or anybody for that matter. My sister is an epilectic and has recently came out saying she wants to go through assisted suicide once our parents pass, which, fingers crossed, won't be anytime soon. While I support her decision as a grown adult remember to love those who are suffering and be sure to check on them.
It's when you realise that life's nothing special that you start to dwell in this realm of thought. He did that very young and better than any of uss. That's what's making it so great.
Ian Curtis was on the same level as John Keats when it came to heart felt vision. A mesmerising writer and performer. We will never see the like of him again. Thank you Ian, for being with us, even for such a brief time, thank you for all you gave us, thank you for articulating what many of us could never put into words, thank you for the light and the up lift of common grace.
This is a great discussion I have honestly we should continue this. If I see Keats and I see Yeats writing to Maud. I even see Bukowski dude, but Ian is just as good as the former two
Honestly, I personally think this might be Joy Division's magnum opus. And that's saying a lot since their whole discography is a sight to behold! I think part of what makes Joy Division such an iconic band is the band's short lifespan. They only lasted 4 years (if you don't count New Order)! Yet, they had such a big influence on music and other bands that came after.
This is the lonelyness, the sadeness, the HUNGER and hate before he is going to meet THE FATHER....the END and the BEGINING. THE FIRST AND LAST... ALLAWAYS....
I know the lyrics are the best. Poet. I know the band are the best. Ever. I know the production is the best. Hannet. But i never realised how great curtis voice is. Superb. Just great. How deep and emotional.
The graphics on these lyric videos really work well, especially on "Atmosphere",and I've said it on a few other of these new lyric videos - a great improvement on those re-imagined videos.
That's the year I graduated from high school. I didn't get into Joy Division until in grad school in the mid 1980s when a friend introduced me to their music although I had heard the name of the group. Love them.
I am german. In 1980 I was 9 years old and I didnt know Ian Curtis. I was so sadly when Curt Cobain died in 1994, I was so sadly when Michael Hudgens died in 1997. But for me is the deth from Ian Curtis the most tragic in the music History 😢😢
This song and " Isolation by The Impures " .... are some of the only things getting me through the beginning of 2022. Times may be tough but everything going to be okay in the end. I hope everyone is doing well. .:DDDDDDDDV
On that ‘87 tour at the show in Los Angeles they came out for a second encore after the lights had come on at the outdoor amphitheater and played “Sister Ray.” Place was half empty at that point. People couldn’t get back in. It was an awesome double bill with Echo and the Bunnymen. One of my favorite concert experiences of all time.
martin hannett , was truly the fifth member of the band !!! without his keys and effects as well as whole sound production , they would have stayed as WARSAW !!!
Sometimes socialites and rich people don't understand they are unequal to scholars. Sometimes, people have delusions that they are scholars and intellectuals without hard times with the books. Art, music, mathematics, fiction, and poetry are often ways people attempt expressing this. Kudos if you can survive their onslaught with an attached clarity. Hint* One of the best ways people have found to express this inequality is through the atomic explosion that ended World War 2.
