Because they're not the saddest songs, the saddest ones are made of global contemporary commercial technobullshit without the single trace of this "yesterday's" beautiness
The great thing about Joy Division and Ian Curtis is the fact that for the first time in history somebody put his total being in his music and words. This band only knowing a few accords with an amazing drummer and base player will never disappear , they are like the Mozart or Beethoven in modern pop music. New order was great but never had the same credibility .
Joy Division reaches out to the lonely, the lost the depraved, and makes them feel seen. Maybe they aren’t, but this group could make you feel that way. There no putting a limit on that.
you have a way with words, thank you for your perspective, i know it speaks to me and anyone else as you very well said that feels like a misfit in this place we call home.
It was the beginning of the 80's, the young people were either Disco or Hard Rock, neither of them appealed to me... And Joy Division came along and started the New WAVE movement...A blessing... Waiting for The Cure, Simple Minds and New Order! What a thrill to listen to all this again.
sorry but joy division did not 'start the new wave movement', that name was the creation of the uk music press around 1978. joy division were formed in 1976 (first called 'warsaw' but became joy division in 1978) ian curtis killed himself in may 1980 and joy division were no more. new order was formed by the remaining joy division members plus gillian gilbert. the cure formed in 1978, simple minds in '77. not sure where you are from but i dont think it is the uk!
Love Joy Division, but their final album was released in '80, and they didn't start the 'New Wave' movement, or post-punk. They were one of many bands that left punk behind for a more experimental approach to making music. Banshees were before them, PIL had three albums under their belt by '80, The Police were huge, and there were a host of other bands. Where Joy Division stand out is in their permanence. What Martin Hannett did to their sound in the studio has ensured they remain relevant, that and the lyrics by Curtis and his own terrible story which make the lyrics even deeper. The Cure had recorded two albums before Joy Division, Simple Minds had recorded two.
Was that in the US? 'cause in the UK there was Northern Soul, Punk, Two-tone/Mod, Skin/Reggae, as well as Hard Rock and Disco........this "New Wave" you allude to, evolved directly from the musical hearts and minds of fans/proponents of all of these........ only in cultural deserts/wastelands were there only two genres of music......
There was no "New Wave" movement! There was a natural progression of musicians who realised Punk was a a very narrow genre, and then took inspiration from the many other genres of music around, and preceding Punk
Long live Ian Curtis. He was the first singer of my first ever live band. Imagine that at the age of about 17!!!! Bloody magnificent. Long live Ian in my ears, my heart and mind. And yours too.
It's funny when people say this music is so depressing, when it actually helps so many people beat depression and brings a lot of people pure joy. Ian Curtis maybe gone but he will never be forgotten. Long live the King...Ian Curtis
I’m 54 and until now I appreciate Joy Division. Why are genius performers so looking to end their lives? Ian Curtis, Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Amy Whinehouse, etc (longer list). What gives. Each of these artist so good at their craft. We are lucky to have their songs to live forever. Good music truly is timeless. Rest in Peace to all and thank you for your legacy May your souls find comfort and peace. 🙏✌️🤙
It is their "feeling too much" that allows them to write such amazing music and also causes their deep depression, because there's not a damn thing can be done with all the things that make us feel too much and therein lies the crux of our depression.
I love those singers who you mention but artists, musicians and writers have always rationalized their drugging and drinking as "necessary" to make great art. This is wrong and masks self destructive behavior and teaches younger people that inebriation is crucial to creativity. As if junkies are braver. I have empathy for all but say the opposite. Good bye Ian. I had tickets to see JD in Chicago on their first tour.
Songs in order (with timestamps): 00:00 Disorder 03:15 Love Will Tear Us Apart 06:44 Transmission 09:18 Atmosphere 13:36 The Eternal 18:39 Dreams Never End 21:37 Ceremony
Dont walk away ... Drums percussion sweet .. the voice in the mind The struggles of life to some find it overwhelming thats what makes em shine .. real diamonds even more rare
@@MD-ru5vs I listened to Joy Division far too much as a depressed 20-22 year old. I literally couldn't listen to them for years! Many years later I came back to them and find the music beautiful and uplifting.
This enabled me to discover a new somg : DREAMS NEVER END ! Gratitude Galore already 4 this... but also for all the rest ! Oh, and man, do i love THE ETERNAL and ATMOSPHERE !
keep in mind that "Dreams never end" is New Order song, it was issued on their first album Movement (check it out, you wont regret it, trust me). The vocal on Dreams never end is Peter Hook (not Ian C. because he tragically past away few months before that song). 2 last songs from Ian Curtis were "Ceremony" (which is unofficial punk/post-punk love anthem) and " in a lonely place".
Very rare that art holds up in this way. It's extraordinary, really, as it doesn't merely hold up, but seemingly grows in its greatness and magnitude, Truly a legendary band and a genius poet & vocalist. Thank you for this.
maybe u might like this song im going to recommend u, is called " SLEEP BY THE IMPURES " a really great song like this one, check it i highly recommend it :) .............vcvcvcv
@@theres1dent he had alot to say, jd brings out the emotions in even the biggest jd superfans. he feels alot about how he feels. ngl i just hate when every mf want to call all the shit they love genius (in this case everyone else has already been calling this band and their records genius for legit like 50 years) sometimes ur emotions just catch up with you boy look at me
Cada canción de Joy Division, Cómo New Order, tienen ese Toque especial, que te dan ganas, De saltar y aferrarte fuertemente a la vida, Grandes, por siempre!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ E Ian R.I.P...🙏🙏🙏
1) Good selection. 2) Thanks for mixing them. No one else does that. 3) It just dawned on me after all these years how much The Jesus & Mary Chain might owe to Ceremony.
Ian was, tragically, a torn genius. He was, ultimately, too aware of the world for his own good. He brought the beauty of the world to us all from his own pain. He was the Van Gogh of music & he will never be forgotten x

@@vinterbukser2261 If I found the song, I would listen to it right away, but I couldn't find it. thanks for the recommend. Is there a link where I can listen to this song?
I suggest listening The Gun Club. Especially the early work, with 1982's Miami being an absolute masterpiece. The punk spirit and passion for Blues let singer and mastermind JLP express his emotions in a more cynical way, witth exceptional ability both as lyricist and vocalist. The late work is full of melancholy though. Superb guitar play, but that makes it even more intense (for me at least).

so sad, though, makes me cry. especially after watching the CONTROL movie about ian curtis and new order. such a poignant part of the film. i dare you to watch it without crying .....
Mr.Curtis; not only an extraordinary poet, much underrated and deserving recognition as one of England's better through the centuries, but also a spiritual mentor with deeply thought out and heartfelt reflections and truely worthy advice for all from his time in this realm. 😊😊😊
Even the mans suicide was poetry, he watched Stroszek and listened to the album The Idiot before doing the deed. The last things he wanted to experience were samples of the art forms he loved.
And another thing, this man genuinely believed that his singing was garbage, and that American audiences as well as simply future English audiences would lambast him into ridicule, it's considered one of the major reasons he took his life (along with his impending divorce). But it speaks a valuable lesson about mental illness and neurosis that he thought something so false so genuinely. and that the very fact we are listening now disproves his self doubts. I sometimes dream of a timeline were he would have lived to sing Age of Consent or Blue Monday.
Graças a Deus comecei a ouvir Joy Division desde 1979. Atmosphere, The Eternal. Ajudou me muto na minha juventude a lidar com muita coisa. Obrigado Joy Division e New Order.
Day of the Lords, No love lost, Insight, New dawn fades, Excercise One, The Sound of Music, The Only Mistake, Something Must Break, Means to an End, Decades, Digital, These days, Leaders of Man are missing. My playlist would look completely different.
One of those few bands who can inspire multiple generations; of musicians at least to the point where wearing t-shirts with their album cover is instantly recognizable.
My teenage years were filled with Joy Division. I picked up the bass age 9, haven't stopped playing since. Joy Division was a huge influence on my bass playing and style. Forever grateful to the entire band for the amazingly beautiful talented music. RIP IAN
Saw New Order at Heaton Park last weekend and have to say the encore with Transmission and Love will tear us apart sent shivers up my spine... Truly a great band, and so underrated after the tragic loss of Ian. All of them are/were amazing musicians.
maybe u might like this song im going to recommend u, is called " SLEEP BY THE IMPURES " a really great song like this one, check it i highly recommend it :) v
After Joy Division there was New Order, perfect band... Best band ever... So many brilliant songs... And Blue Monday was our song when we were teenagers and young adults... every time when we had disco night we asked DJ to play that brilliant song... year after year... and how about Elegia: song for Stranger Things and Metal Gear Solid V... they have so many perfect songs... New Order is so important band for so many people...
Nothing quite like them before or after, Ian was a poet who bared his so soul like no other i`d ever heard before or after. Joyous and ultimately sad in equal measures the music joy division created will live with me until i die
Unknown Pleasures and all the rest cheer me up for some reason. I saw the first American tour for New Order for Ian passed. I still have a photo somewhere. The band played in a cramped space. His microphone was center stage pointing upward. It was an instrumental set until the new order songs.
