This is one of many small estates around Belfast, both Protestant and Catholic. They usually hold the most extremist views and hate is taught to their children as a way of life. I am a Protestant, and this is embarrassing for me to watch. These people do not represent Protestants in N.I. The Catholics posting here, "mount vermin", "up the ra" etc are the Catholic equivilant and I'm sure parts of their community are just as embaressed by them. N.I is moving on, we all have to accept peace.
Should have stayed away from this one I think, too many people came off looking way too badly - including Des, which was unavoidable as an American tourist I think. The Tuam "travellers" were candid and funny IMO.. But the racism and hatred these Belfast loyalists are indoctrinated into is just too thick and it doesn't make me laugh. Just my $0.02, keep up the good work.
@ATSGLA l you're probably right, but the state of the Celtic tiger brings a smile to my face these days.Borrowing deficit of 32 per cent that cracks us nordies up
You were talking about Loyalists stealing Irish songs weren't ya? Thats what i'm getting at too. I tried to explain to a protestant fella i work with that the Sash is an Irish song written by an Irish Protestant, he couldn't grasp the idea of an Irish Protestant. Honestly it was like showing a dog a card trick.
The Wild Colonial boy is a traditional Irish/Australian folk song about Jack Donahue - an Irish Rebel, highway man and eventually BushRanger. So who stole who's song??
The younger generation of northern ireland have known nothing else since they grew up in this environment, its going to take along time and another generation before the bigotry is forgotten. like the guy says at the flute band practice he would love to see Northern Ireland as a whole celebrating the 12th July like in the old days but says he probably wont live to see it.
Good measured answer and i dont blame you for not ever wanting to visit M/V Strangely enough I had a catholic friend who lived in the estate and thought it'd be wise to get out, even though his family hadnt been intimidated. So he packed up and moved to New barnsley and the 1st night he moved in he had his car stolen and burned. From the frying pan into the rire so to say.
but their are ppl on the other side just as bad , burning Union Flags , petrol bombing and paint bombing Protestant homes in Cluan Place .Irish republicans have also attacked Protestant school children in Ardoyne on buses.
And the loyalists haven't killed and maimed Catholics no.. The shankill butchers ring any bells.. loyalists loyal to the queen. of British blood not Irish.
