At the start of World War II civilian pilots were recruited and the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) was formed. Initially only male pilots were recruited but within a few months this was expanded to include women who were qualified civilian pilots. At the Fly To The Past 2011 Airshow at Oxford airport were lucky enough to meet two of the former ATA female pilots and interview them.
Joy Lofthouse joined the ATA in 1943 when they started recruiting people who would be trained to fly as all qualified civilian pilots had already been recruited and were in service!
In the interview Joy talks about how the women ATA pilots progressed from being allowed to fly single engine training aircraft to single seat fighter aircraft (Hurricane and Spitfire), twin engine aircraft and in some cases even 4 engine heavy bombers (Lancaster). She also talks affectionately about Hamble Airfield, nr Southampton, where she was based.

A wonderfully modest and lovely person. With the sad news of her passing today, we have lost one of the last links to a past era. I would have loved to have met her to chat about her experiences. Her family must rightfully be so proud of her achievements. RIP Joy.

My spoken english isnt good, but I hears she talked much about qualifications. A fun fact is, the official demands on their flying qualifications were very strict. Several hundred hours of solo flying. But when the demand on more pilots come, even female pilots, the demands were reduced somewhat; and what really decided was a rather basic flying test (essentially, start in the Moth trainer, fly around the area in a quadrat, land) And if they managed the test (and of course, physical examina, security OK, etc) they were let in, and got more training inside the program... Thus some naturals with suprising few solo flying hours did come in... Weak palookas of course did never come in, or were thrown out during the training course. But naturals had a fighting chance to come in. The brits misogyny was much lesser than americans.
