Coming of Ageing : Embracing the Beauty of Growing Older

We live in a culture that dreads the inevitability of growing older, treats it like a disease to be cured with potions, tries to silence it with botox. And through all of this, we’ve forgotten that to grow old at all is a tremendous privilege - to become a person worthy of old age is the triumph of life.
Our goal shouldn’t be to cling to youth as we get older, but to keep our joy alive by tending our inner child throughout our days while also nurturing our connection to the changing world. In doing so, we balance wisdom with wonder, confidence with curiosity and depth with delight.
A long life is a gift. But will we really be grateful for it?
Featuring Vicki Robin (vickirobin.sub...) and friends Ross and Deborah Koff-Chapin.
Filmed in Whidbey Island, Washington State, USA.
The full quote shared by Vicki during this film is by Florida Scott Maxwell - "You need only claim the events of your life to make yourself yours. When you truly possess all you have been and done, which may take some time, you are fierce with reality. When at last age has assembled you together, will it not be easy to let it all go, lived, balanced, over?"

Thank you for your kind message. We are glad you like our videos. We are sorry that we cannot always provide Greek subtitles but we rely on volunteers and sometimes the person that assists us is away or busy. Or we might not have anyone that can assist us. But whenever possible, we add Greek subtitles. Maybe try the 'Auto Translate' function of RU-vid if we have not added Greek subtitles, it can give you some insight as to what is said. Here some assistance to set it up: Make sure that the CC button (next to the Settings wheel) is ON. Click the Settings/Wheel button in bottom or top right corner of the video - then select 'Subtitles/CC' or ‘Captions’ - then select 'Auto Translate' and choose Greek. We hope this helps you and that we can share many more videos with you. Warmest hugs, Justine and Michael. 💚

I just turned 70 in late December and I was very very upset. It seemed unbelievable to me. And I have done shadow work!! But this number still hit me like an iron frying pan. Then....once I finally FELT through the newness of such an auspicious decade, I took a deep breath and RELAXED. I am proud to say my age and I smile when I do. Thank-you for this wonderful video about a time in our lives, if we are lucky enough to embrace and enjoy. Sending hugs out to all the women who have recently turned 70.❤❤❤

That's terrible advice. We all need to look back and see the mistakes we made and try to redeem them as we can. If you went around hurting people even accidentally, you should acknowledge that because maybe you're still doing the same things. The shadow side is work that needs to be done to be healthy. So we don't continue the problem of hurting others.

When I was younger I understood that my mother sacrificed herself so that the people around her wouldn’t be troubled. There’s a deep wound in our culture…we are encouraged to take what we want. My sisters ran towards their own lives chattering about what mom did or did not “get right”. It would have saved us all so much pain if they would have simply loved her 🤷‍♀️I love the wisdom of this woman…she’s done the hard work…she’d be a great friend❤️👋🇨🇦

You may not have shared the same experience with your mom. It’s happens. I felt the same as you for many yrs but as I got into my 40s now 50s and after alot of reflection and some therapy along the way they have a right to their feelings and express them. It’s not fair for me to negate them for any reason. Life and emotions can be messy. Reality is we don’t know what we don’t know. If we sense our experience/feelings in a relationship are being dismissed or minimized it causes resentment and only inflames how we feel. That’s not saying any of us do this to others incl family consciously or with I’ll intent but it may not feel that way to others. For me slowly over yrs I’ve learned more compassion and forgiveness for others incl my family (not to ignore or make OK any hurt caused.) It’s let me put myself in their shoes even a bit. Peace and health on your path and with your family.

This is really life changing for me, I love these videos. I’m 21 about to be 22 and I’ve been through a lot of change in the last few years that’s been very confusing and overwhelming. I’ve struggled to give myself credit for all that I’ve been through and lived in my head every single day thinking about what’s gone now and denying that pain because I care for it so much and anticipating the future and whether or not my dreams will come to fruition. Then there’s the thoughts of death that could come at any moment, so I’m doing my best to be as real as I can and live my life in the present moment and enjoy it as much as possible for myself while being kind to everyone I meet and sharpening my talents to share with the world/leave behind. I carry so much shame and guilt that I can’t seem to let go of despite knowing I was doing my best at each time with what I knew… constantly striving to be better because it’s a race against the clock in my chest. I’ve been in isolation for a while now too, I’ve had friends to talk to but I just feel so alone and so badly long to experience so many beautiful things and laugh while being my unapologetic self again with people who can do the same, but I worry if that will ever come and I know that it won’t last forever so I’m not sure that I want to even open myself up to more pain. My mind does this protective thing where it keeps me in a fantasy and numb all day long, constantly seeking distractions to avoid reality, but I’ve been trying my best to be fierce with reality like this beautiful woman says. It’s just scary and intense. I don’t really know how to cope with it, a lot of the time I feel empty and like I’m just living the same day on repeat and all for what… If there’s one thing that changes my outlook from here it’s that she said she cheerfully embraces the coming of aging, which is definitely a much needed perspective in my life… I do my best every day to be positive, yes in hopes of a bright beautiful future, but im opening up to more of a moment to moment basis now. Trust has been huge, there’s a bigger aspect of myself that knows better and loves me and I am so thankful for that, it literally washes away all of my problems. I’m not really sure what this comment is it kind of just exploded inside of me so if you read this then I hope it helps you in some way. I feel better now that I expressed it, thank you again for this video and for whoever is reading this. ❤

I felt that too (I'm about to be 25).. I think I'm coming out on the other side now though, able to embrace the change more, accepting me for who I am at the moment, each moment again and again. It's intense but so worth it, I think. It's a journey. Saying it (or writing it) out loud can work wonders and resolve some doubts ...and your words really resonated. Thanks :)

Letting go of the terrestrial and embracing what lies beyond is crucial to understanding the void veil. "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind's journey now begins. What you shared will resonate with many. Yes forgiveness is essential for peace, healing & life. However I saw so much missing of God's love & being beyond self. The creator has a plan & as your body goes into the ground your soul continues no death there's eternity where you spend it in the love of Christ or in darkness where no light of God whatsoever. Though someone may not be aware of Him or believe our creator has been with us always on this earth. Look up.

You start out talking about how growing old is about loss. For me with loss comes grief. Sometimes the grief becomes accumulative. Too much to carry. Weighted down with the sad and depressed stage of grief. It’s oftentimes difficult to move out of this stage, because just as you come to acceptance of one loss another loss happens. Thank-You for being honest about loss and growing old whilst adding a more positive way to think about growing old.

She’s wonderful. My favourite actress - Frances McDormand said something similar…. “ There is no desire to be an adult. Adulthood is not a goal. It's not seen as a gift. Something happened culturally: no one is allowed to age past 45 - satorically, cosmetically, attitudinally. Everybody dresses like a teenager. Everybody dyes their hair. Everybody is concerned with smooth skin. Getting older and adjusting to all the things that biologically happen to you is not easy to do and is a constant struggle and adjustment. You are someone who , beneath the white hair, has a card catalog of valuable information

I celebrated my 66th birthday on 02/17/24. When I celebrated my 60th I had an album party where my guests dressed up as a rock star and brought the vinyl record album of their Stars, had a DJ and it was a blast, I said to all my family and friends that night "The Best is Yet to Come". In the last 6 years I faced more trials and more tribulations, plus just plain ol sucky crap than I could've imagined that night, but some how I rose above it all and many wonderful things began to take place even in the midst of the chaos and in many of the horrible storms that blew through my part of the country, wrecking many of our country homes, farms, and ranches. I'm lucky to be alive today and my horses and other farm animals are too. It was after going through all that and more, that I finally found the courage and bravery to have both of my knees replaced recently on 05/17/24 and 07/22/24. I truly feel now as though the best is yet to come because if I can get through all that I did being crippled, and barely able to walk, and going up and down my steps, getting in and out of my truck hauling hay and feed, driving my tractor doing all my farm chores in constant pain...I'm now walking straight again my legs are no longer bowed and no limping for the first time in 20 years with NO physical pain! It's a miracle. I was scared half to death to have my knees sawed out of my legs and new ones hammered back in. I found the Orthopedic surgeon who is the best in East Texas, graduating from the Mayo Clinic before turning 30, and a man who was also humorous, positive, and a Christian, married to a beautiful woman with two small adorable children. He has given me hope again. He said I'll be able to ride my horses very soon and can now start living life fully again! Recently while recovering I found out that I'm eligible for my dual citizenship to Italy through my great grandfather Bernardo Cinquemani. My next goal is to sail to Italy the same route my ancestors took from Sicily to New Orleans, LA. My great grand mother Lillie, my grandfather's mother, was born on a ship along with her twin brother Phillip coming to America to be reunited with my great great grandfather who sent for her after making enough money in New Orleans as a shoe cobbler. It took her 2 months to get here due to extended bad weather. They went on to have 7 more children and my great great grandfather became rich opening the first shoe store in the French Quarter in New Orleans and bought many properties to rent out and and my great cousin told us he was bringing in over $1000.00 per month just in rentals in the late 1800's. He bought and imported all the marble from Italy and had these giant mosoleums built in the famous Metairie Cemetery for his children and their spouses. I plan to travel there to take the tour soon.. I feel like my whole life is now beginning again and I see my extended age as a gift from God and I am not going to worry so much about losing my beauty or my once fit and toned strong body or seeing all these lines in my face and on my brow, they're there because they're a part of the all the experiences I've lived in my life so far and some of them were happy and some of them were damn hard. Five kids, 3 divorces, and 10 health food stores and Pilates studios later, all of that a while back now. Yesterday would've been Mr. Falbo and mines 40th wedding anniversary, my 2nd husband who I adored, loved dearly, and I had five children with. Sadly and we lost one of our children. My oldest is from my first marriage. I feel that now I can reinvent myself, dream bigger and plan to travel to my ancestors villages in Sicily to walk down their old cobblestone streets and to thank them personally for having the courage to leave their homeland in hopes to make a better life for their future generations here in America, the land of the free and home of the brave. I'm ready to be ready to be ready... Life is good, and truly the best is yet to come. 🙏🇺🇸🤠🍻 This woman is such a sweet and beautiful soul, loved her story and friends poems! Thanks again for the awesome content! Ciao, Annette Fivehands

Imagine what the world would be if we all annually took a deep dive life/actions audit. The impact on our children, it breaks my heart. I have been on youtube since the very beginning. This is the best video I have ever watched here. EVER. I am 54 and I want to be Vicki when I grow up. I just realized this is THE Vicki Robin!! I read her book in 1992 and it changed my life! Thank you Vicki!!

I remember uploading my first video in late 2005 as well! 🙂 Hard to believe I made 600+ of 'em, too. Reflection is most certainly key when it comes to understanding both what is here and also what lies "beyond". "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind's journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart and soul's fate revealed. In time, all points converge; hope's strength resteeled. But to earn final peace at the universe's endless refrain, we must see all in nothingness... before we start again." --A.B. (DD1) 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

Funny, I've been thinking about the shadow of late. At 69 yrs old, it must be a natural process. I'll have to spend some time thinking about the harm I've done to others and do more work on the attachments. Nice video. Thanks

That's incredible; I was just having a similar talk with my brother, and I told him to do everything he could to stay healthy, eat properly, and exercise on a daily basis; we need you. I need you, your grandchildren are young, and the rest of the family wants and needs you here. We both cried and lifted each other up. All of your content is SO REFRESHING, touches the soul and provides HOPE! °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

I always felt unhappy. I couldn't die on my own and didn't need a will. I had nothing to say. I was just scared for tomorrow, a month and a year from now. I wanted to die because of my family, but I'm afraid I'll let go of the accumulated resentment. I'm a survivor of a violent family. I am a single woman with a large age gap with my parents. I had dementia and had to quit my job and protect my parents. Last year, my parents died three months apart, and I collapsed under a lot of stress. All that was left was a sore body and heart. But now it hurts. I was confident until my father passed away, and I was left with only a scar. I'm in therapy, and it keeps crumbling. But if you look at the video, there's a life like that. It's cool. I envy you. You can learn a whole different life. Thank you.

We're sorry to hear of your loss. We hope that, with time, your heart will heal and find peace. Cherish the memories of precious time spent together. While it isn't possible for us to film more with Vicky (as she lives in the USA, and we have returned to our home in South Africa) - she does publish regular content under her personal blog on her website. You can find the link in the write up below the film. Sending you much love, kindness and care. Justine and Michael. x

I am grateful to makes apologizes where they were needed and to thread more lightly on the feelings of others. And to be able to do so before I am on my death bed. Beautiful as always!!
