After a soft, inviting voice over open, Christmasy chimes announce the first card followed by the familiar (OK, VERY familiar) choir from the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. The sheer overuse of this song is exactly why I find this piece impressive, because the addition of the above mentioned chimes, while also completely ignoring the Jagger vocals, is just enough to make it feel like its own thing. Strong montaging, with more lip-flap than I’d normally prefer though it feels appropriate here considering O. Russell’s freewheeling style. I really like the Cooper hand gesture at 1:05 kinda pushing along the music. Then right as the music sounds like it’s about to cresendo, a shotgun blast cuts it off, countering the dramatic rise before it with a feisty attitude into title.
