The fifth song of Schubert's Winterreise, Der Lindenbaum ("The Linden Tree"), harkens back to happier days from a landscape of cold. Discover Joyce DiDonato's interpretation of the complete song cycle with pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin: w.lnk.to/winterreiseLY
Traditionally, Winterreise has been the preserve of tenors or baritones, but some major female singers of previous generations have set their stamp on it. Joyce DiDonato joins this distinguished company and presents the 24-song cycle from the perspective of the woman in the story. "It really becomes a parallel journey," Joyce says, "between the man’s words and emotions, and then the woman’s experience of them."
Recorded: 15.XII.2019, Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, Carnegie Hall, New York City

YES!!! Thomas Mann, in The Magic Mountain, dedicates some interesting paragraphs to this piece and how its main character, Hans Castorp, relates to it. I read it many times on paper when I was young, but I listened it recently in an amazing Audible version performed by Davit Rintoul. It is the unabridged John E. Woods translation, and Rintoul renders it brilliantly; he even dares to sing the first verse of The Lindenbaum.

I enjoyed this performance. However the dynamics are a bit disappointing. Doesnt portray the contrast in this piece too well.

After World War I, Germany was hit by hyperinflation. It is said that the central bank (Reichs Bank) intentionally circulated a large amount of banknotes. Half of it's council members were foreigners. There is a view that after this disorder, 80% of Germany's wealth was concentrated in a certain race, who were less than 1% of the total population.
