Sam…You’re gonna kill yourself doing stuff like that. You need to take a serious look at what you’ve shown your audience. There are lots of people who wouldn’t see an issue with any of this. Don’t take me as one of those kinds of people who wants to wrap the world in bubble wrap either. Danger is fun but it’s dangerous enough to do a voyage like that in in a boat like that…even with an epirb and a solid boat….. I am by no means the best sailor in the world so take my words with the grain of salt they deserve… but I see a major lack of the knowledge it takes to do this right!

Love that line 8 out of 10 for sketchiness Joe 🤣 As a Rescue Pilot I found it concerning they were not wearing life jackets. Too easy to come off and lose the boat. If you’re not wearing it you may as well not have one. Life jackets worn a must with PLB(personal locator beacons) for both people. I’d give 9.5 on Sketchiness but certainly is an epic trip and a good story got out of it. I’m glad they were successful and got there safely.

I made some earlier comments on this guy's channel expressing my deep concerns as to the absolute lack of safety measures. My biggest point was that this guy does not only puts his own life in danger but also the life of his girlfriend who might be unable to actually assess the risks making such a trip on a piece of crap and almost certainly trusting her boyfriends abilities to take responsability and keep her safe. Being a father of two daughters myself, this guy could certainly count one some kind of 'constructive feedback'. Nice to notice the deep concerns you express, albeit somerimes between the lines.:)

@@JoyriderTV thanks for your reply:) however none of the great sailors I know, and none of all the professional sailors using the ocean as their daily office, whether it is on cargo vessels, container vessels, tugs, oil carriers, coasters or whatever, would ever take his lady out on such an irresponsible trip. To me a great sailer always respects open water like a mountaineer always and always respects the mountains. Going out in open water on a boat like this shows a concerning lack of responsability and a complete lack of respect for open water. Furthermore it is the emergency services that will have to come to the rescue once things spiral out of control but,,to my humble opinion saving guys like this should not be the purpose they are founded for. But that's only my take on this kind od adventurous footage. Furtermore keep up your great work on RU-vid. Your videos are absolutely great!

Please, don't take ideas from this video. And take safety really seriously. PFD, VHF at very very least. What will you do if your shroud fails? Can you really right it if capsized with all the stuff? Hobie is a great sport and beach cat. But not a cruiser. I'd happily go for such a trip, but only with a supporting boat near me. Then i'd try to squeeze all the juices from it, not bothering much about breaking hulls, masts and sails. But alone? Doesn't look responsible for me.

Agree with Young Sam. Criticisms if anchor set up were invalidated by him showing retaining brackets. Jib is nice, not essential. Sam has since singlehanded to Hawaii in a 21' mono & is presently cruising the Med & a utoob sensation. This vid is of Sam starting out on s brilliant sailing career, all newbies don't get it right all the time, but a utoober using Sam for buoyancy is pretty sad.

@@tgalbraith2152 I don't care about being right or wrong. Regardless if we're talking about me or Sam. At sea, the only person who is responsible for your life is you. Nice if you're lucky. But if i can give someone couple more chances to survive, i'm all for it. But still, it's up to you to use it or not. Your life - your responsibility. Sailors are quite "social cynics". Ready to help, but easy to accept most stupid decisions of others.

Didn't appear to have any type of foul weather gear either. Even in hot climates, you can get seriously cold. The only time I have ever had stage two hypothermia was in Miami FL during an Olympic Class Regatta event on my Tornado. Water temps were around 70 degress. Air was nearly 80 in the morning but during the races a storm came in, howling winds at 20-28 kts and air temp dropped to maybe 60 degrees. But the killer was the wind chill effect from incorrect clothing for conditions. I had on a long-john wetsuit with just a lycra top.The continuous spray of warm water was instantly chilled by the high winds, making a very effective evaporative air conditioner effect. After about two hours I had stopped shivering and started to have difficulty making decisions moment by moment. We abandoned the racing but the home dock was nearly a 45 min sail away and that was the worst time I have ever spent on my boat. Three days later I came down with severe pneumonia and spent two months bed ridden on antibiotics, losing about 20 lbs body weight in the first 10 days.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 месяца назад
That was the elephant in the room. I think it's because of Sam's yachting background - I have found that people who have started sailing on small boats always wear lifejackets or buoyancy aids whereas yacht sailors see them as optional.

Great video, Joe. I made the mistake of going on a sail camping trip with the family on my Hobie 16 once. 2 adults and 2 kids on the boat and we had gear stacked up almost touching the bottom of the boom. We only had a mile or so to the island we were camping on at Squam Lake in Nee Hampshire, but there also happened to be no wind and we ended up paddling the whole way. We were exhausted by the time we got to camp. The next morning heading back we had to paddle the whole way again because of no wind. It was not a great trip.

I am a big fan of Sam Holmes' videos. When I first saw this video I was astonished. I was going to post something on his site but figured I'd get flamed. It's not just that he undertook something so risky but that he made it seem reasonable and may have inspired others to do the same. The water draining from the hulls speaks not only to the lack of intergrity of the watertight nature of the boat but is probably ultimately what saved him. Without this unintended "water ballast" the boat would have likely flipped in the gulf stream long before reaching the Bahamas. And while we're at it, getting off the Cape Dory when the wind died 2/3rds across the Atlantic to swim with the whales was another nailbiter. At least tie a rope to the boat and the swimmer lest the wind pick up and sail the boat off and leave you with the whales. Yet I remain a big fan. Sailing is a blast. Safety first--Always.

I've watched a number of Sam's videos. I love his youthful enthusiasm for adventure! However, and this is a big issue, is his seemingly deliberate attempts to be as sketchy and reckless as possible to add to the you tube video. The leaking hulls, poor rigging, loose rudders and no means of communication if in distress are reckless at best and fatal at worst. It has the wonderful potential to influence others to take on this kind of adventure of distance sailing and camping, (that's great!) but in a way that risks not only his life, but that of his lady friend and all those that would respond to his at sea emergency.

I would say that just being unaware of the difference between an idea you think is great,,, to a VERY VERY BAD day and maybe,,, if your lucky,,, a lot of time to think about the ride NOT being that great of an idea,,, while you wait for rescue, because any one of many things that could go wrong. Is that port hull showing buckling from delamination. At 57 sec you can see the delam. Possibly could have been myself at one time many years ago. Good review

Yeah where were the life jackets? Did they have a secret support vessel? Was painful to see all the drilling
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 месяца назад
Yes, the lack of life jackets are an indication that Sam comes from Yacht rather than dinghy sailing - yacht sailors see them as optional rather than mandatory. The drilling hurt me too!

I wonder why they did not have a jib.....I would not sail with all their stuff on it with minimum rigging, it's too heavy and low safety, despite that wood ball on top of the mast. This catamaran is not built for that amount of weight incl anchor on starboard side. The rudders should have been stronger /havyer to mitigate power/strenght of the hulls.
@JoyriderTV
@JoyriderTV 4 месяца назад
Yes, I would have to agree with everything - just tightening the rudder bolt would probably have saved the blade!

I'm not going to judge the level of preparation and idea itself, or I'd be banned. The only thing I'd try to confront is the type of the HC. For me it looks very 14ish. The shape of the bows and absence of jib suggest it. It's very hard to take 16 out of irons w/o jib as well.
@JoyriderTV

The Hobie 16 is the most abundant catamaran globally. I certainly would have taken a jib.
