the reason why most rap artists' guitars sound bad is because they generally use vsts and plugins instead of an actual guitar, or even when they do use guitars its generally without many pedals/effects making it sound very bland/boring/inorganic
Freaky is a frequent collaborator since peggy’s baltimore days. If you have time check out the album they made together, 2nd amendment, it’s a banger. AVAA
Prediction is he is going to bring up the kanye drama, fantano's opinion on the song and something ive never heard about in my entire life (Its gonna be amazing) Edit: idk what spud from trainspotting is so i got 2/3
I think Fanano's opinion on the track is pretty consistent with what he's said he likes about Peggy, he loves Peggy's more dynamic style, the tracks that evolve over the runtime, and he didn't feel like this track really did that. Also didn't meet his expectation for another collab with Freaky. After all you have to take into account that meh never means he dislikes it.
freaky's only claim to fame is through peggy's music. he's appeared on features here and there and they even did a mixtape with each other back in the day. he has done solo stuff too which is def worth checking out
Howdy prof! Another great video, I really enjoyed the comparison to Rick Rubin and how despite having achieved the same thing. Aka, using guitars well in a hip-hop context they really went about it with completely different methods. Where Rubin is as hands off as possible and Peggy is the one making the beats. I would love to hear your opinions if you ever get the team on Das Racist, Heems and Sweat Shop Boys. Both Heems and Kool A.D. are basically grandfathered in the NY scene but have now splintered off into two completely different paths. We don't really see that many Pakistani artists and of Heems going for a more self conscious sound and trying to write in some more serious themes and ideas in his lyrics is something I think is worth digging into.
I know you just posted this, and I'm not sure if you've covered him before, but please at least listen to the new Mavi song - drunk prayer. super powerful and I think you'll enjoy it.
I don’t want to make any wide sweeping judgment as to my opinion of jpeg based off the Kanye thing as Kanye has always been his favorite artist, he also is somewhat conflicted about the whole thing from what I can observe. That being said, briefly excusing fascism does worry me a little bit. If I got a call from Picasso that’s one thing, I’d probably go meet them. If I got a call from Salvador Dali, I would not entertain the idea because as much as I love surrealism, Dali was a goddamn fascist and I wouldn’t want his art touching mine for fear of my anticapitalist messaging being tainted. To be clear, Kanye is a little different from Dali and I have more sympathy for Kanye going down the rabbit hole to fascism than I do for Dali. So while I think JPEG doing work with Kanye is deserving of critique, I don’t think it needed to be as aggressive as what he got on twitter. I mostly just hope that he got Kanye to make some progressive art again in some way. I also have to mention that I am severely biased, Walter Benjamin talks about how we need to be politicizing art as opposed to aestheticizing war, and I take that guys writings as scripture a little bit. So when Peggy waves aside Kanye’s reactionary nature so he can make some music, I don’t see that as standing on the side of politicizing art, it’s sort of dissociating itself from politics in pursuit of aesthetics. I just think it could be sort of a slippery slope, but I still love Peggy and I am still excited to see what he makes. I don’t think any of this invalidates his work at all.
his flow is sick. but does anyone else feel like this is a flanderization of his sound and style? "say that shit with your chest out" lyrics, alien bubbly sounds as the motif for the beat (the ENTIRE beat this time), and an anthemic guitar solo on latter half of track. we've heard this all before and done better i.e. Ghost of Ranking Dread and Garbage Pale Kids. honestly i find the beat here to be really uninteresting (almost like a jpegmafia type beat you'd find on youtube) and his rapping has just been reduced to "haha white people" and "people hate me" and nothing else, and this song is a prime example of that. I called it flanderization because i can't think of a better term to describe jpeg's artistic trajectory in the past few years than that
Yeah I kind of felt like that too, but to say it’s flanderazation is kinda disingenuous. Jpegmafia has always been a very cynical kinda guy. He thinks the world is out to get him, and has experienced heavy racism early in his life. That shit sticks with you. Early in his career he made experimental music almost in spite of southern racist white people, he went to shows looking for a reaction out of those types of people. It’s his whole MO. And the type of song structure you mentioned is only one archetype of song, he still has a lot of variation in his sound. But that’s just called having your own sound. You should be able to hear an artists beat and know it’s from them otherwise you have no originality
Jpegmafia name isn’t jamargret. It’s Barrington Devaughn Hendricks. His old music name used to be Devon Hendryx. You also said his name was jamargret in another review of his music(I think the OFFLINE review) so I can’t tell if you’re joking about that being his real name.
Yes, I'd say no to Picasso, and I think anyone with full knowledge of him would say no as well. The contrary is spineless and devoid of values or the will to act on your values. To say that ANYONE would drop their morals and soften their stances on racism or misogyny for a chance to benefit socially or financially is a self report to the highest degree.
I see your point, but I don’t think it is a question of social / financial gain and instead a question of artistic collaboration. I don’t think it is about clout, but about making art with a hero.
You should add that to the Genius lyrics annotations, seems to be the most plausible explanation and they're nowhere near that on there atm. Really great verse thanks for the insight
@@hasankhan7782 i got into them with their Face remix with Peggy, their album visions of bodies being burned has so many industrial bangers. Say The Name, Check The Lock and Enlacing are my fav off that project.
clppngs is in the other side of the spectrum (not the autism version) in terms of experimental production just taking cues from industrial and other sources, but peggy has some elements of that added to his production.
Just gotta say, I dont think rappers use guitars because of an 'inferiority' complex... I think its simply because guitars sound cool, lol. The rest of what you said still stands, and I do think plenty of rappers want to be 'rockstars', but I highly doubt they're comparing themselves to actual rock artists, moreso they really like the aesthetic of rockstars. And guitars sound cool AF (usually). But yeah, good callout about not using guitars as poorly as rock artists use rap lol.
AVAA. Damn have you still not listened to Amhac and veteran? I completely understand if not but like JpegMafia is like a very long story with a lot of reoccurring themes. And samples. Like the " make a mistake with me" sample he uses fairly early on his career and then uses nearly a decade later on veteran. And bla blah blah. I am too deep in the sauce.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. i do have to say that freaky and jpegmafia are good friends and have an entire ep called " the 2nd ammendment" freaky's a fun dude. he also featured on veteran. Jpegmafia has a couple of friends that really go back like that. ie. datpiffmafia on " REBOUND" and others.
I completely agree with your assessment that Peggy is the best producer right now, and I think this single shows that he hasn’t lost anything. Very excited for this new album. I am happy to have discovered your channel from the all-consuming 2024 rap beef - I think your analysis manages to be both insightful and charming. Keep up the good work! AVAA
AVAA from a new fan! Have you already talked about the distinct Detroit/Flint sound that’s been emerging the past few years? There are some really interesting and funny artists that have captured my attention over there
“They say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice, I say the darker the berry, the deeper the roots” is a 2Pac line. And the white rapper cos playing as driller is something Lil Mabu is doing, please google him for context!
You should check out Your Old Droog's album Space Bar. It contains a song called Yuri where he raps over an extravagant guitar solo which I find really good.
Are you going to wait for Lupe’s album to drop to analyze his current new songs like Samurai and Cake? I’d love to hear your thoughts on these tracks and the overall concept for the album inspired by Amy Winehouse battle rap voice memos
on the note of freaky, when Peggy was getting his legs in Baltimore freaky was his closest collab, they made an album together "the 2nd amendment". I was surprised to see them coming together again but it's cool that after working with his fav inspo "ye" he came back to his roots to colab with the person who really put him on in the Baltimore scene which ultimately translated to his breakout wth veteran. Peggy is my fav artist btw and it's always a treat to hear your breakdowns of him avaa
Facts. Irredeemably greed and clout oriented movement from CornballMafia. I dont care who is and isnt a genius when there's near infinite amazing music I could listen to out there made by people with morals and a spine !
AVAA!! just wanna say this review is what convinced me to listen to JPEGMAFIA on Apple Music, among his top hits was a song he did with Raveena that appears in the latter’s brand new R&B/soul album which is sooooooo good. funny how things work like that. thanks prof!
You think this song is a Drake diss / lap around his destruction? Peggy references Future, Kendrick, the song Back to Back. The main sample "I hear you went down", the album is called white people (drake) vs accountability. AVAA!
This cannot be the best place to leave this comment, but I am coming back to this video after the pop out yesterday because I'd love to get your thoughts on Kendrick's setlist. I am definitely re-evaluating the meaning of those specific songs and the overall message he was sending.
